Official 1st rd Draft Commentary Thread

Pats take Logan Mankins...So much for getting him in the 3rd...Time to move on to the other thread :) ...

That was a surprise, but he is definately a good OLineman. He will be a guard for them.

Thanks but don't pat me on the back too hard. There two biggest needs were help in the secondary and the OLine. Most people think this draft is very deep at WR and CB so I'd guess the Patriots feel they can find a quality CB in later rounds.

This is the first post from me today and I'll keep it brief since this is the "Official Draft Commentary" thread and my commentary isn't particularly complimentary.

First Texans draft I've walked away from feeling like the Texans did something stupid. When you're picking 13th in this draft, have just sent both of your inside linebackers packing, and Derrick Johnson falls to you you take him and don't hesitate. Casserly made a mistake today in my opinion. An exceptionally stupid mistake.

That little slice of genius to get us another 3 next year left a bad taste in my mouth the rest of the day. I walked outside and spent the rest of the afternoon working on my yard and trying not to think about the draft.

im not one to judge until derrick johnson tears it up and travis johnson dissapoints, but so far casserly has made only one major mistake in a draft (taking chester pitts ahead of clinton portis), and hes made some great grabs in the later rounds, so I'm inclined to trust his judgement, although I'll admit i was dissapointed when they didnt take him.

Don't you think that if Portis was some outstanding, can't miss guy that somebody would have taken a chance on him before pick #51? He is a decent back, but behind Washington's O-Line, he looked painfully average...

you guys have nothing on me, just returned from my daughters memorial. All I can say is don't be too harsh, there are more important things in life, I'm a witness to that fact.

Travis Johnson addresses in my opinion the Texans biggest need, that of upgrading the DT's with a pass rushing force, the best prospect in the draft at his position. I really thought the Texans where going Spears but as some have suggested he is more of a tweener type, jack of all trades but master of none. Travis should real inject some inside nastiness, something we can agree has been sorely lacking. just give him a chance. the extra 3rd round pick was just a bonus.

I think Curley Culp coming out of retirement would have been a better choice for the Texans 3-4. Not that Derrick Johnson is the 2nd coming of Mike Singletary...but damn...I think he would have made more of an impact on the Texans D than this other Johnson we got stuck with.

Three things...

1) I don't like the 3-4

2) I can't stand Domanick Davis (arent his 15 minutes about up?)

3) The only decent 1st round selection in Texans history - Andre Johnson. (okay - Dunta wasn't too bad)

Oh...one more thing...I'm not a Patriots fan...it's just a name.

still like you logo old school :thumbup

that really puts things into perspective...Beerlover, you have my condolences and my prayers go out to you and your family.

Its not my job to know all of the college players but when you see quotes like this, it kind of scares you.
:thumbdown
FROM FOXSPORTS DELUCIA'S SCOUTING TAKE: This is a major reach and rivals another horrible Charley Casserly pick from the past — Heath Shuler. Travis Johnson is one of the most overrated players in this draft. He has character flaws and is very inconsistent on the field. I've questioned his effort on several films. Johnson is a poor fit within their 3-4 defense. Charley Casserly defines himself again as one of the most overrated personnel guys in this league

Um, Dallas racked up.... That's all I can say. I think most would agree, they got what we needed almost exactly. Hopefully we can find the Diamond in the ruff duplicate of what they acquired.

Sorry about your loss beerluver. That's harsh. I couldn't imagine. My thoughts and prayers brother.

Oh no, a running back? WTF? ok, now I'm a little worried. True all teams can use a few good running backs, but that was not our weakest point. In fact, we are fairly set at running back. What about left tackle? what about a line backer? what about our D-line? Come on now guys.

Ah Morency was one of my guys. :thumbup He ain't pretty but he is a hard nose runner who'll get the job done. I saw him play live against Texas a couple of times . He's a good player. He's not going to run away for 30 yard gains, but he'll hold the roap and work his rear end off for ya. Perfect back up for DD.
After a night of sleeping on it. I can live with Travis. Just dang bad luck. I'd rather have CC taking the gamble for the extra pick next year than be a stand pat all the time guy.
TJ isn't Curly Culp yet. But after seeing his family and his interveiw last night, I'm ok with the pick. He's definatly upgraded the depeth of the d line. Gonna be tough losing some of the original guys. I hope the owner will prove he's a hold the roap guy and give the Coaches and CC the time to build the team. At this point Bud would be ready to pull the plug on everyone. We who lived that once don't want to go through that again.
