Official 1st rd Draft Commentary Thread

well my spending was getting out of hand anyways i dont need my season tickets anymore.

Elite, calm the **** down... You are sounding like a little girl. Were you that in love with DJ. I go to UT and watched him every home game this season. He is NOT as good as advertised.

From Espn:

Travis Johnson
Johnson played in 11 games in 2001 and was a part-time starter from 2002-'03 before taking over as a fulltime starter in 2004. Johnson's draft stock improved greatly thanks to his breakout senior season in 2004, when he finished with 50 tackles, 18 TFL and 2.5 sacks. Johnson is a one-gap defensive tackle prospect with very good initial quickness, mobility and short-area power. He also has adequate-to-good size for that type of DT prospect. Durability and off-the-field issues slowed his development as a junior in 2003; he had a shoulder injury that required surgery and went through a sexual assault case that eventually he was acquitted from but naturally occupied his time and energy. Healthy and on the straight-and-narrow, Johnson was rededicated and played the best football of his career as a senior in 2004. His motor was running at an all-time high and he emerged as one of ...

CC can TRY and spin this however he wants, but he was expecting DJ to still be there @16...they didn't fall the way he expected.

I personally think he thought he'd have a choice at 16 with Davis being there also.

Easy to draft winners in the top 10. Tell that to San Diego, Cinn. Clev. New Orleans, Phonix etc.

CC is doing a great job every year we have improved vs everyone in our division this year we will make the playoffs
CC just proved once again he stinks. Travis Johnson over Spears and Pollack. This one will go down in the annals of BUSTS!

what in the flying ... what just happened?

Travis Johnson? Who in the hell is travis johnson?

Whatever; I have implicit faith in you, CC. Let's hope he pans out.

Rough draft, but I questioned the Dunta pick last season so I'll wait for the guy to get on the field before I act like I know what I'm talking about.

Are we getting away from teh character issue rule? First Buchanon, now T. Johnson, who pissed off several FO types at his Pro-Dayby having whats reported as "a cocky and surly attitude". (quote from 1310 am in Dallas)

Off to get ready for LonghornBabe's wedding....gonna cry over this pick with friends from the Blue Lot...

I guess the lack of talk about Travis Johnson makes everyone forget how good he is? He can play middle or outside for us on the line, and I think hes better than Spears. Chill out people, what do we always say? Trust Capers and Casserly....

Johnson played at a big time school and had a great year. I like the pick. We need DL to pressure the QB and free our LB's. Look we get a 3rd in next years draft and get an excellant prospect. We are going to be OK. Hey just because DJ played at UT doesn't make him the right pick for us. CC is doing a great job. It is about making us better and making the playoffs. We will be better next year and we will make the playoffs. We also have a 3rd round pick next year..

I don't think that at all. I don't the CC really wanted DJ. I think we wanted Ware or Merriman, and when they were gone we decided to beef up our line.

I don't think Pollack would fit in our system, so I can understand passing on him. So I think it was between Spears and Johnson for CC. I wasn't completely sold on either of them, so we shall see how it turns out.

Hopefull Johnson will be able to line up at any of the 3 spots on the DL. One thing people can't dispute is that we really needed work on the DL.

All these knee jerk reactions are kinda annoying though... :listening

you guys are a bunch of homers...don't you think that the coaches and scouts know a little more about what they need than any of us? If you homers think this is a reason to stop following the Texans or to stop buying your season tickets, then I for one, don't really want you as a fan anyway.

darnell dockett who went in two last yr is better than this guy. TJohnson is a horrible value here and there is no way to defend it.

have you ever seen him play? even if you have you probably havn't seen enough of him to form a educated opinion on how he will be in our defense. if anything he can provide more sacks than walker, which would be an upgrade. i don't know what to think about the pick. i was hoping for spears and was hoping that we didn't take a lb.

Don't be silly, if they had given a flip about DJ they would have taken him
at 13. This Johnson is more of a 3-4 type lineman than Spears, atleast in
the Texans opinion.

Lets face it...we were one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL last year, as well as the year before. We have gutted our inside linebackers and now added a DT. Looks like that was a priority this off-season.

Might as well sit back and let all the reactionary posts settle down. With a line of Walker and Payne, 2 older guys with past injuries, picking up Johnson makes sense. I like the pick.

Ya well said. I am a huge LSU fan, and although i wanted Spears, i trust CC and was irate about it..

Aaron Rogers is the Titanic here. I think the NFL is even feeling for the kid. They even got McNabs Mom trying to cheer up the family. GB is salivating.

whats all the people crying "bad draft" already? i've been following this board for two months and all i hear is how much everyone trusts casserley. trust him now! johnson will be a solid d-lineman in the nfl. he's explosive, versatile, an dplayed with a great motor last year. there's no way cc drafts a player he's uncomfortable with, and his history with first round picks is outstanding.

i'm good with this pick.

So why is it only you saying it is a horrible value? Seemed like the guys on ESPN thought we needed some Dline help.

Oh, I forgot, you are an all knowing football expert, right?

There could also be medical concerns with Johnson, as he has had neck, shoulder and ankle problems during his career at Florida State. It should also be noted that Johnson was charged with and acquitted of sexual assault in 2003. Johnson may have round one talent, but for most of his college career he has played like a day two pick, which qualifies him as a likely boom or bust pick. Johnson currently carries a second round grade.

ill second that, coaches know more than any of us on here. How many of us can honestly say that you've spent hours watching DJ and TRavis Johnson on tape and practicing. They obviously know something we dont and im just hoping he comes in and does a great job.

If he comes in and makes a huge impact i expect alot of you on here to admit you were wrong, if he flops however... just go ahead and continue you ranting and raving.

Give the guy a chance.

I posted this in the Travis Johnson thread...some positive to offset all of the negative.

According to Frank Coyle:

Travis is the #1 DT in '05 Draft...he displays great quickness and great power that demanded special attention. He shows a rare combination of quickness, strength and athleticism with the ability to rush the passer from the inside and pursue very well on running plays. As a pass rusher he shows the explosiveness to gain fast penetration into backfield and the power to push the pocket as a bull rusher.

Well, CC and Dom had something in mind we didn't. Travis has potential and if you think NE and how they built their 3/4, young lineman have been key.

I think my DJ pick was better, but I'm still ok with Johnson.

Sexual Assualt?! Shoulder Surgery?! We gave up DJ for a 3rd round pick next yr to take Johnson?? You gotta be kidding me.

He was accuited fo the charges, by a jury of his peers. So it's stupid to hold it against him. Shoulder surgery was befoer his best year at FSU, so I don't think it should be an issue.

As for the DJ think, I'll admit I was a little pissed we passed on him, but when the Saints also passed on him; and they had a bigger need at LB then we did I started to think that the rumors of DJ's problems were more subtansial then first though.

I am curious to hear Casserly explain why it was Johnson instead of Spears.

Another reach by CC. Watch Pollack outplay him all yr. This guy should have went in two. Just Terrible. He has attititude issues medical issues and he is not even close to a consensus best DT on the board by anyones group of experts. This is the kind of stuff that gets you canned. I think you have to question this pick. I would have liked Clayton or Barron over this guy.

First of all he was acquitted of the crime, and second what in the hell does his criminal career have to do with his production in the NFL. I dont care if the guy did some serial killer **** back in his day. If he comes in and gets the job done then im happy.
