note to Carr: "You play to win the game!"

San Francisco 49ers coach "Mike Nolan" took a shot at Texans quarterback David Carr on Sirius radio last week. Regarding Carr's comments that winning the first draft pick meant that "it's probably better to be in our locker room right now than San Francisco's," Nolan said, "If one of our players had done that, it tells me where his mind is at or was at some time. I would hope our players' mind was never on draft position or things like that.
"I don't believe any of our players would maybe have made that comment."

I think he needs to be coached on what to say to the media. Obviously, with his other lame comments which I have already brought out in multiple threads, and this, it is sending out the wrong message to his teammates and fans.

BTW, Jimmy Johnson's comment on leadership in that article are right on. Too bad he didn't entertain McNair's supposed offer.

I mentioned my disgust with his demeanor and his overall giddy disposition when it happened. I can see how it drew out a comment from Nolan.

One vague line, offered without any context, quoted secondhand by a coach who has nothing to do with our team.

Any one have the rest of this "clip" in which DC made this statement?

I too said we win to play the game. I have said it about a hundred times on this board. And yet prior to the San Fran game, you couldn't shake a stick at all the "we have to lose this last game" threads.

Just to clarify, all of you people posting here weren't a part of that battle cry, were you?

A comment like that is not good no matter how you frame or position it. Yes it was most likely flippant and maybe had a slice of truth, but that comment should never find itself to the media.

Agreed, that sort of stuff is what he tells his wife before they turn off the lights and close their eyes.

But, just like these boards, second-hand info runs rampant in the media and it's fairly obvious that for everyone but two teams, this is off-season and therefore time to let that crazy rumor-mill grind away. :)

I'm not lying, I wanted #1 and saw no difference between a 2 and 3 loss season but I am a fan with an agenda of wanting to see better players and don't get paid alot to win...ol:rolleyes:

You wouldn't see Favre or Elway making jokes like that. They actually get upset when the team loses.

I agree he probably shouldn't have said that

but this whole he needs to pissed when things are going bad stuff is BS. C'mon some of yall will rag on him for anything and its stupid.

I would imagine a conservative estimate would be that 80% of the people on this board were screaming "Texans Lose - We Want Reggie" for the last 3games of the season. You don't think that the players weren't hearing that? So, here we have a bunch of guys who really weren't giving up even with the worst record in the NFL playing for coaches where the words lousy coaching doesn't even begin to cover the situation, and the majority of their fans want them to lose. Add to that all of the Carr-bashing that was and still is going on. Faced with this, you don't think a little sarcasm might just find it's way out of a person's mouth? This certainly wasn't one of DC's more shining moments with the media - but it is understandable. If the fans were frustrated, just think of how the players felt.

Having said that, I am also going to say that with some of you it doesn't matter what Carr says or does or how he might or might not improve with new coaching - you won't like him period. He could turn out to be a great QB and take the team to the playoffs, but there will still be those of you who say he isn't as good as the UTQB whose name should not be spoken anymore and shouldn't be playing with the Texans.

This is beginning to get on my last old person nerve. :brickwall When and if you get right down to the bottom line - winning is what matters - not who is playing when the winning begins as has been mentioned more times than I can count but still isn't sinking in. A 2-14 season isn't attained because of one person. Let's give the Carr bashing a rest. Please! Thank you for allowing me to vent.

If people would put the same energy into finding good things about Carr and his abilities as they do digging up dirt on him.. we would all be convinced that he is a future hall of famer right now.

But whatever.. im beyond taking any of this junk seriously anymore. Carr will be here next season..and I will be supporting him and hoping that Kubiak can get him to the next level. I hope that other Texan fans here will do the same.

The only value that a #1 pick really has is that we will take a finite hit on the cap, trade value for it and what the #1 player's on field potential is. That is it as there are no guarantees. As far as losing to win, I think Coach Lombardi says it best, "once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit."

I'm a big Carr homer I'll admit that, but I can see his faults. We won't get in to that.

I do not think that any of us can make a fair assesment of him with out sitting down with game tape (not TV Style, im talking the cut-ups, WIDE, Tight, and endzone) and the play sheet. We don't know what type of protection they where in, who where is his primary targets and what secondary reads he was suppose to make.

You can make some judgment of a QB based on what you see on TV, or at a game, but without all the tools listed above you cant make a 100% accurate assesment of his play.

Thankfully Kubiak is gonna be able to sit down and asses David with these tools, and not a CBS game feed and a Dave Ragone jeresy.

...you Carr Lover's would have credibilty if-just once in a while- you could give exanples of good things to say about Carr, without defending him/making excuses/telling us how it's going to be all better when Carr works in a perfect situation., etc. The other sides give enough examplea/specfics but all the Carr lovers do is bash the Carr haters--c'mon bring on the 'meat and potatoes!' This situation is like the one that existed last year with the "Caper" lovers/haters, one side (Homers) did nothing but put down the "Chicken Littles" instead of backing up their opinion.:twocents:

i wanted a win. I posted it 54000000 times that i wanted a win...never once did i wish for this draft pick. Im still not happy about it. Happiness in losing disgusts me personally, whatever supposed benefits it gains you in the draft. Im not calling anybody who rooted for the 49ers a bad fan, but that has never set well with me

In agreement. :texflag:

I never dissed anyone that wanted a "strategic loss" to the 49ers, but I just can't root for my team to purposefully lose. It'd be like hoping your wife picks up some dude for a quickie on the way home. "Hey, he gave her $50 to buy some KFC!!". It's just wrong, IMHO. :thumbdown

Pretty good odds on Kubiak ripping Carr a new one even before something like this happens again.

Kubiak is like Bilichick in the sense that he aviods the media and the limelight. He'll get ahold of Carr really quick and probably have those comments typed out on paper in big bold letters, all lined up right after another, and ask Carr what he thinks people think about those comments all stacked up on top of one another.

After a pause, and just as Carr begins to answer, Kubiak will stop him and tell him to start a new habitat: Think before you speak. Come back to me tomorrow and tell me your answer.

Capers didn't stop Carr because, well...Capers is just as bad at public speaking as Carr is. And save me the tired rant about how distinguished Capers was and blah-blah-blah...the guy was THE WORST at coachspeak that I have EVER witnessed.

Would you honestly want several spots further down the draft line just to gain some vapor of dignity that ends just as quickly as it began?

But I agree on one thing: The guy needs to have his mouth stapled shut until he proves he can accurately comment on ANYTHING,

Good post. Carr has to LEARN to not answer with the truth and how he actually feels. It seems to me he just says what he is thinking and not how what he is saying is going to be precieved.

Dont call me a Carr lover :)..im not oblivious to his problems.. im just not oblivious to his strengths either.

How many times do we need to repeat all the positives and negatives about Carr?

He is intelligent..he is a great athlete.. he has a great arm.. he has great accuracy.. he is a pocket QB but can roll out with the best of em.. he led the offense to their highest scoring quarter when he had control of the offense. He showed heart and determination against the Jags when he dived in for the TD.. he did it again when he came in with the injured shoulder and ran for 20 some-odd yards.. he has had great games in the past.. the one against Minnesota and the overtime against New England come to mind. Anyone who denies that Carr has played well in some games has selective memory.

He has had a bad coaching staff with a bad pass protecting oline and bad protection schemes.. he has been limited to 3 step drops for 90% of the passing plays. He had no running game is first two years. he has had Bradford as his #2 receiver for 4 years.. he has had WRs with bad cases of the dropsies..

every problem on the offense cannot be blamed on Carr.. id say far less than half can be blamed on Carr. Id also say that you cannot definitively say that he is either bad or good until you see him under a coaching staff that isnt dead set on fitting square pegs into round holes.

I want to see him with a real Oline coach and some more talented olinemen. I want to see him with an O-coordinator who knows how to call the protection schemes. I want to see him under a coaching staff whose solution to our sack problem isnt to have Carr get rid of the ball faster.

Ive heard the knocks against Carr.. I agree with some of them.. I disagree with others.. and quite frankly im TIRED of hearing all of it. He needs at least one more year.. preferabbly two, before you can honestly say whether he is a bust or not. Anything less than that is jumping the gun.. anything less would be ignoring his positives and focusing solely on his negatives.

That is how I see it. I wouldnt call it Carr love. I just dont want to give up on a player before he has had a chance to prove himself.

If Carr played the whole game and said that after losing .. I'd be mad.. that is something that shouldn't be said (where is Crash Davis when you need him)

What Carr should have said is "we didn't win but glad we executed better than the last game" How about that

Personally I hate losing.. yet I see no difference than playoff teams "jocking for position" .. I'd liked for us to start Ragone, and some of our younger players to see how they would do in a meaningless game.

I could see the threads now if we won that game.. all of yall would be crying about why we didn't lose so we could have "the runningback of a generation" or the QB "that will restore balance to the force"

:twocents:

I certainly couldn't pull for my team to lose. And drafting high is definitely against the higher paid (and higher cap figure) players' interests.

David Carr just frustrates me, much like Capers did. I'm tired of trying to try to read between the lines and figure out who he really is and what "level" he can reach. I've run out what little patience I had after last season.

I am not sure and my perception of last year and the year before.. I always wondered on our injury report.. some players were held out ...yet I wondered if we were on a playoff run if those players would still be "out"

I am for the trade down and gain some picks.. esp with the hype going on 2 certain players

It would be tres interessant (very interesting) to go back and track the poster's positions on:
1. Win or lose to SF in Dec. Draft position or pride?
2. Reggie Bush, before and after the declaration of...
3. Vince Young
4. The Trade downers
5. The HC debates

Starting in mid December, through our last game, through the draft declarations and up until now. I am just not that motivated to do it, but would be really interesting to see how some poster's views have changed. Some have stayed the same and some have splintered backsides from jumping bandwagons. Just a little food for thought. :)

Jerome Mathis laughed when Kris Brown missed the final field goal against Tennessee. Obviously he has a bad attitude about this team too. Get him the heck out of town and draft us a new all-pro return man. Make sure that return man is a speedster that could develop into a number 2 reciever. I don't care if he is qualified, obviously he doesn't care about this team.

Now for those that can see through that sarcasm, has no one thought that Carr could have been just as frustrated as we are. Many posters privately wanted to lose that game, but are terrified when Carr even metions some fans deepests wishes. I realize he is the face of the franchise, but we all lose control sometimes. We need to look past comments made after a 2-14 season when everyone in the city watched a meltdown. It's not Carr's fault that the defense let him down multiple times this year. Off the top of ym head I believe we lost 3 games in a row when we had 4th quarter leads. Not all of this can be blamed on Carr. He was frustrated. I understand that. I hope you can too.

My stance:

With 6 ganmes left, I predicted them winning one more game
1. I predicted a victory in SF for Houston(though they actually beat Arizona which o predicted as a Loss). The week before the NIners game, I said I would cheer for the Texans, becuase YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.

2. I made no comment on Reggie Bush then and still havent

3. I made no comment on Vince Young sans I wanted UT to win the Natl CHampionship. I still have not made any comments on him.

4. I made comments about how trading down would allow us to fill holes on both sides of the ball. I still have said that, though I have not yet endorsed that plan of action or any other.

5. I thought that Capers and Cass should and would be fired after the season. Capers would be fired, Cass not yet. I Heard Kubuack's name getting thrown around and thought he would be a solid option.

There you are.

c'mon....are you serious? ok ..question carr's physical talents or his mental make up after being beaten for 4 years because we have no line...but does anyone honestly think carr does not want to win? or gave up? we all know..or we should know that the coaches would not take risks...play to be close...and if we ever did have a lead..you think they would have ever gone for the throat??? our coaches were a joke...carr did not lose to get the top pick..and he did not fake an injury

Mathis is a rookie that played on special teams and few times lined up as WR. His cap hit this year was $320,000. He did not have any post game comments that would have a longer shelf life than a laugh around the league or in the locker room. Carr was the first pick ever by this team and was a cap hit of 7.8 million. Hopefully our leader would have more sense when he speaks with the media and at the same time address rookies on the sidelines when they laugh at our lack of success.

Sorry, this is a cop-out. Mathis is an NFL player and should be held accountable just like Carr. I don't agree with all the Carr hatred and I don't REALLY think Mathis did anything wrong. I think he was just laughing in disbelief. But if you are going to set the bar for one player, the standard holds for all players.

Actually we are in agreement. That was the point of my post, but sometime....I don't get acrosse exactly what I mean. I get REAL tired of people parsing words and segments of conversations and then assigning meanings to them that match their agendas.

Please tell me where I have not done that. If Mathis spoke to the reporters in this fashion I would be on him as well. The cop out is in fact comparing a rookie's smirk on the sidelines to a QB's words to the media, in my opinion.

QBs words to the media (according to some) show his "acceptance of losing". Same can be construed by a WR laughing when his kicker misses a field goal that would have tied the game. How are words different than actions? If anything, words are easier to misrepresent than actions.

I want to emphasize that I don't think Mathis did anything wrong and I don't think the words used by Carr means he has "accepted" losing. I just do not think we should have different standards and I think you are setting different standards for different players.

My god.. people just looking for things to rag on. David Carr has not showen his ability.. but yet, I believe he has not had the chance. Look at what Favre did this year.. lost his oline the year before, and his main WR, and look what happend to him. I dont care what kind of QB you got, if you dont have a oline, some wr'ers, and good coaching, he will not succeed.

favre didnt seem too bothered this season near the end. heres that quote on nfl.com that i saw the day after the game and it sounds reasonable IN CONTEXT

If Houston had won, the New Orleans Saints would have received the top pick and first dibs on Bush, the Heisman Trophy-winning tailback from USC who's widely expected to enter the draft.

"You heard the talk all week: 'Play well, but don't win,'" said Texans quarterback David Carr, sidelined in the first half with a right elbow injury. "All that stuff was a little distracting at times. Maybe a lot of fans were glad I busted my elbow and Andre (Johnson) got hurt. There were some wild things about this football game.

"If we couldn't win them all, if we couldn't make the playoffs, I guess having the first pick, as bad as it is, might be good."

Yeah, Favre wasn't smiling when he let Strahan sack him to break the record, eh? Instead of fighting to stay upright, he folded so his friend could get the sack record...

Interesting. I don't know that Mike Nolan is as knowledgable about what's going on inside his players heads as he thinks he is. He might not have had anyone foolish enough to say it out loud but I'm absolutely positive that someone in his locker room was thinking about the draft.

It is telling though about David Carr's mental state at the end of last season. Going weeks at a time without a win, having everything you could possibly imagine go wrong, and knowing that your coaches were all going to be fired weeks before the end of the season couldn't have been a good thing. David said it but I bet many in the Houston locker room were feeling it.

When David Carr gets upset because the team loses he then catches flak in here for not controlling himself and his emotions. Honestly man I'm not really addressing you in particular TEXANS84 so don't take this the wrong way (just using your post to make the comment) but... You people need to decide what you think leadership is and how it's defined because you change what you think it means and how it's demonstrated on a damned near weekly basis.

Now everyone get their panties in a wad and say "Not me!" (and yeah some of you it's true, not you. More than a few people on here though have a damned if he does-damned if he doesn't attitude about David Carr (or just about any other Texan you get annoyed with).

I don't seem to remember Elway or Favre getting their ***** handed to them every friggin' game. I seem to remember Favre and Elway always having a good o-line, solid WRs, coaches that knew how to take care of their players.

Good lord about his comment though. I didn't know most people were niave enough to read so much into everything that the media reports. Half of what the media says is half of what they get from people. I should know, I work in the media. Most writers and reporters only put down what they think will make biggest splash. Does anyone for sure know exactly what Carr said afterwards? I highly doubt it.

"I don't believe any of our players would maybe have made that comment."

And if the Texans do pick Young, then what locker room will Carr be in because it definitely won't be Houston's. Of course, Carr might be thinking, "That's not such a bad thing."

Go Longhorns...........

Thank you for your extreme overgeneralization.

FYI: I've attended to 2 Longhorn games in my entire life (the last was Nebraska in 2003). I've attended to 32 regular season Texans games and 8 pre-season Texans games. I think I have a little more invested in the Texans.
