No Surprise, Coleman Benched.

From KFFL:

The Texans will start C.C. Brown and Glenn Earl at safety for the rest of the season.
Brown has enjoyed a productive rookie campaign and is a decent long-term IDP bet. The Texans are benching Marcus Coleman. Dec. 7 - 10:13 pm et

So you can add safety to a long list of other needs for this team.

They should have benched him when he picked up that DUI a few months back ..... Wrecked his Mercedes (hit a tree) near the intersection of Westhiemer and Kirby

I checked KFFL and couldn't find the article...Is it because I don't pay to subscribe? Could Coleman be following in Sharper and Glenn's footsteps on his way out?

seems like the coaching staff is reflecting all the negativity back on the players. but its not going to work we can see through your thin wall of deception. Coleman needs to be moved back to CB your little experiment failed :ok:

safety was supposed to help extend his career, i dont think he would be able to keep up as a corner.

i agree they should start looking elsewhere for a free safety spot. after they let mcree go all we really had was coleman. i dont think cc brown is great in coverage from what i saw of him when he was starting at SS. but then again, i didnt get any coverage of the texans/ravens on cbs (thanks alot) so im not to sure if my comments are a reach.

This post is indicative of a major problem many, many Texans fans have. KFFL is a fantasy football site and that seems to be how many Texans fans see the game in general. They cannot fathom the importance of the DL, pass and rushing defense as well as pass protection. They see the game through the eyes of fantasy football -- and fantasy football features the skill positions such as running backs, QBs and WRs. Real football has very little similarity to fantasy football. The NFL is more than who notches up fantasy points. It's about line play and defense. If you have a strong OL, you can put anybody at RB and they will succeed. Just ask Denver about that. This is why so many people want the Texans to draft Reggie Bush. They see football through the eyes of fantasy and just can't fathom the importance of an OL, DL and pass defense because those facets of the game don't get many fantasy points. Thank goodness most NFL people don't see football in that light -- Daniel Snyder excepted.

You've got to be joking right? Do you remember Coleman at CB the year before they made the switch? He was getting burned regularly. I'd rather see Peek playing CB than Coleman (obviously neither is suited to play the position). In all honestly I think the best place for Coleman is to find his way off the Texans' roster. I really doubt he's with the team next year, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he plays much better with whichever team picks him up.

I do not know the inner workings of how a team decides who starts or does not - HC, DC or position coach. But it does not surprise me that Coleman is being shut down due to his poor play lately. I like what he had said a couple of games ago and knowing that Brown and Earl will be playing together the final four games gets me excited to see what they can do.

Give Brown and Earl a chance to play a couple games together and see what they can do. Neither one is a very good cover safety but both tackle pretty well and are fairly athletic and our run defense should improve having a second guy back there that will actually come up and make a tackle. Both are also young (1st and 2nd years) and have some learning to do but at least we have Coleman out of there now. I wouldn't mind seeing us draft more of a cover FS (maybe someone like Huff from Texas that could play S or CB), but for now I think CB is a bigger need in the draft than S, but we'll have to wait four weeks and see how Brown and Earl do together.

That happen in May of 2004, after the decision was made to move him from CB to FS, but before he played at FS. He actually performed well at FS in 2004, leading to a 3-year contract extension.

I don't know what happened to him this season. But I could say that about most Texans' players, leading me back to laying most of the blame at the coaching staff's feet.

I mean i'd like to have one of our safeties (usually the FS) be a ball-hawk back there. I mean I dont want a horrible tackler but can't we get a ball hawk and good tackler back at FS.

This really had nothing to do with "fantasy" games. I mean really, who starts a safety on their fantasy football leagues, let alone Coleman. KFFL is just a great site in general for NFL news and sometimes they add their own personal spin. They scan the papers and electronic media for information on ALL players and coaches, it's more than a fantasy football rag.

If you've actually watched Coleman closely you will come to the same conclusion, he's lost and clueless and has lost some of his desire.

Although we have CC and Earl, they definitely need improving and are not even close to being great.

Can we please find a player that hits like Bubba McDowel.. I dont see CC hitting that hard but Earl has layed some wood..

Your point is very appropriate for some posts/threads, but this is a horribly inapprapriate time to make it. We're talking safeties here, not FF players. More importantly KFFL runs a newswire taken straight from other news sources. This had zero, nada to do with FF. But good rant otherwise.

I want to see what those guys can do together, that way, we know as fans, what we need for next season. These guys are young, they may be the answer back there.

A statement in the Houston Chronicle today about Coleman ...

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/3513446.html

Coleman wants to stay

Safety Marcus Coleman, who will come off the bench against the Titans for the first time in his four seasons with the Texans, said he still wants to return for the final two years of his contract.

"I want to be here," said the 10-year veteran, who is slated to make $1.785 million next season. "I can still play."

Of course he wants to remain here .... where else is he gonna make $1.785Mil ? ..... 3 to 1 He's cut over the offseason .

No kidding. At times I thought Coleman was afraid to lay a hit on anyone.

Kinda like PBuch at the corner sopt ... he looks Afraid to hit someone :brickwall Worst move yet by the Texans ...... Yes Worse even than passing on DJ :brickwall

I personally think the problems lie in the players(and just like alot of us posting here) don't believe in the coaching staff.

there are problems here.. from what I can see of people complaining.. Sharper/Walker/D-rob/Coleman all have had problems with our playing style.

Why would Coleman say he wasn't to come back to this team if he doesn't fit it? That doesn't make sense.

Because this team will have a completely different coaching staff next season.

I, along with many others, don't want Coleman back anyways so hopefully the choice will not be in his hands.

Everyone makes mistakes. Marcus should have been benched because of his lousy playing skills, not his driving skills(or lack of)!
