NFLPA investigating collusion between DEN/DAL re: WRs Dez/Demaryius

Story on possible collusion between Cowboys and Broncos: NFLPA is reviewing information to determine whether there was collusion between the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys on the unsettled contractual situations of franchise WRS Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant, per an NFLPA official.

The NFLPA believes the Broncos and Cowboys had contact about each players’ contract when the collective bargaining agreement prohibits such contact. The NFLPA now is trying to determine if collusion did occur and when to possibly file a claim. The deadline for the WRs to sign long-term deals is Wednesday of next week.​


This may turn up nothing, but I think the next big battleground between players/owners will be over collusion.

Or the NFLPA just can't accept the garbage terms they negotiated for their players.

This is from PFT, which is known to make isht up, so grain of salt...

...the source tells PFT that the NFLPA has credible information the Broncos and Cowboys have been communicating to set, control, or manipulate the relevant market — elite receivers who entered the league in 2010. Of course, nothing prevents the players and their agents from comparing notes and devising strategies; Thomas and Bryant soon will be represented by the same firm, given reports that Todd France (who represents Thomas) will be joining CAA (which represents Bryant).

But while it’s fair for players and agents to work together to push the market higher, teams can’t work together to keep the market lower.​
 
I don't get why the NFLPA is chasing this. It's a salary cap league. There's only so much love to go around. Teams have to steal from Peter to pay Dez. If I'm not an elite player, pushing the elite player market high can only hurt me. And the majority of the NFLPA membership are not elite players.

Yeah, you'd almost figure the majority would push thru a rule that no one player can be paid more than X% of the cap.

Why not just take up the democrap cause. ALL players must be paid the same amount regardless of talent or effort or productivity.

Source: Collusion evidence comes from conversation between Dez Bryant and Stephen Jones

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Stephen Jones explained to Bryant that the Calvin Johnson contract, which represents the current peak of the receiver market, has no relevance to other receivers because it was driven by the pre-rookie wage scale deal that Johnson signed when he was drafted by the Lions in 2007. And then Jones told Dez, per the source, that Jones talked to Broncos G.M. John Elway about the situation.

Because the Broncos also have a franchise-tagged receiver in Demaryius Thomas, the admission that Jones and Elway communicated about the situation constitutes evidence of collusion...​
 
Titans exec says team adamant about offset clause in Marcus Mariota's deal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans interim CEO and president Steve Underwood says the team won't back off its determination to have offset language in the contract of No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota, who remains the only 2015 first-round pick yet to sign a contract.

Offset language allows teams to recapture guaranteed money if the player is released and signs with another team.

If the Titans give Mariota a contract without offset language, that would allow him to "double dip" and receive payment from another team as well as from the Titans should he not play out his deal.

"We've always had offset language in our player contracts. It's nothing new," Underwood said. "I think it is important where a high first-round draft pick is concerned, because it's the precedent. Everything that we do is precedential for the next round of contracts.

"So keeping the offset in place is something we want to be able to do going forward. And the minute you back away from the contract principle then you no longer are able to assert it going forward."

Underwood said the Titans would be giving up a longstanding principle going forward if they allowed Mariota not to have offset language.

"Whatever you do echoes into eternity with player contracts," he said. "We just can't afford to take a step back, at least this early in the process. We're still a couple of weeks away from training camp."

Speaking about Mariota's contract situation in June, Titans general manager Ruston Webster said: "I don't concern myself too much with it if a guy misses a few days."

Underwood also indicated that while missed time at the start of camp isn't ideal, it also wouldn't be deadly.

The Titans report to camp on July 30 and practice for the first time on July 31.

"Getting a first-round draft pick, a quarterback, signed and in camp on time, it's a big deal," he said. "It's something we need to be focused on. But using that or any other excuse to subvert the negotiating process, that's faulty logic.

"You still need to stick to your guns about what it is you're trying to achieve in the contract negotiation. You may need to use some fallback position. But getting your first-round draft pick to camp on time is important. Sticking to your guns about what you need to get in a contract is also important."

Underwood is not negotiating the contract but said he expects it will be closer to training camp when a deal is finished. He said he assumes the team and Mariota's agents, Bruce and Ryan Tollner, remain in contact, though the debate is over just the offset language.

"My understanding is, that is all that is left," Underwood said. "I'm sure there are tiny odds and ends, but that is all that I'm aware of."

Bruce Tollner didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.​
