NFL performance based pay list

Had some Texans on the list, but mostly and NFL topic:

The NFL has released its annual report on performance-based pay, with 11 players earning at least an additional $250,000 in 2013 compensation based on their work last season. The performance-based pay program works to compensate players whose level of playing time was much higher than what their salary would have paid.

Generally, lower draft picks and un-drafted free agents who end up being starters, earn the most through the program, because their base salaries very low.

For 2013, Bears tackle Jordan Mills ($318,243.96) topped all earned in the program, according to the NFL Management Counsel report that was released recently to teams.

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, a former un-drafted player who has annually been near the top in performance-based pay since becoming a starter, was second in the league accruing $315, 847. 69 in performance-based pay.

ORLANDO -- Twelve Texans players received performance-based incentives worth more than $100,000 each for the 2013 season. The highest went to safety Shiloh Keo, who received $213,028.51.

These incentives are based on playing time and the player's base salary and Keo, who started 11 games last season, had a relatively low base salary. His total compensation reached $561,125.

Texans quarterback Case Keenum, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent and was only activated to the 53-man roster in Week 8, made $127,030.94 extra, having started eight games last season.

Guard Brandon Brooks made $189,531.95 extra, rookie safety D.J. Swearinger, who started after the Texans lost safety Danieal Manning, made $189,261.74 in performance-based incentives. Tackle Derek Newton made $175,774.16, tight end Ryan Griffin made $166,462, safety Eddie Pleasant made $135,527,71, tight end Garrett Graham made $126,749.10, inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton made $124,812.03, defensive end Jared Crick made $107,826.61, receiver Keshawn Martin made $102,278.29 and guard Brooks Reed made $101,869.85.

Any player who played a single down made some sort of performance-based incentive (reserve offensive lineman Andrew Gardner made a little over $1,500 and fellow backup offensive lineman Cody White made a little under $1,400). These are just a group of the highest totals.

It's a waste of money, but it's the result of not having much depth. Kind of a kick in the balls to have to pay Derek Newton an extra 175k to suck.

This is the first I had hear of this, but apparently it's been around for a while.

Teddy 3 rings was on the radio yesterday and he said this is something the Patriot players fought for because of Brady.

Of course Brady was actually good though...

I had never heard of it either. Does this effect salary cap?

I like the idea, but not the implementation. If it's performance based, then Newton owes the Texans some money. If it's solely based on playing time, then the GM owes the Texans some money.

I don't think so...

I think it's just an extra pool of money that goes to the players...

It's actually a pretty good chunk of change for some players....

I know guys like Keo getting that check at the end of the year must feel nice.
