13. Houston Texans: Dan Cody, DE-OLB, Oklahoma

To say the linebacker corps in Houston are going through some restructuring this offseason would be an understatement. Jay Foreman is gone, Jamie Sharper will likely be either traded or released, Kailee Wong is being moved inside and Morlon Greenwood was signed as a free agent. That leaves one spot on the outside still open opposite of Jason Babin and an ideal fit in that role would seem to be Dan Cody, who has the type of dynamic pass rush ability 3-4 teams look for. In a lot of ways Cody will remind you of a more athletic version of Grant Wistrom when he was coming out of Nebraska in that he doesn't have great size but he more than makes up for it with his intensity and non-stop motor. A bit of a DE / OLB 'tweener, Cody actually played both standing up and with his hand down while with the Sooners so he can play a number of different roles in any given defensive scheme and still make his presence felt. Houston has also been looking to land a top left tackle so if Alex Barron fell this far he would receive serious consideration as well. One area the team is reportedly looking to address that may surprise some people is wide receiver so don't rule out someone like Troy Williamson being a very realistic option for them here. And finally, the defensive line is solid but could use an infusion of youth if for nothing else other than depth at both end and tackle. As you can see the Texans have a number of options but Cody is a good value here and such a great fit for their scheme that he would be tough to pass on.

i hate the dan cody pick...rather have david pollack if we're going for an outside linebacker in the first

Codys stock has dropped. I think if we want an all round Olb , Pollack would be a better value and player. If its to be a pass rusher Ware or Blackstock would be better than Cody.

Yea i would much rather have Ware than Cody.

Grant Wistrom but more athletic? Please... Talk about hype, hes a kid with a lot of heart but will prolly be a serviceable starter in the NFL no matter where he went. His best fit would probably be the steelers where Cowher would like to see that kinda mentality. Cowher loves this kinda player.

I hate everything about that mock...His reasoning behind the Cody pick is basically that Wong will move inside and Peek isn't starter material, so Cody is...Dan Cody just doesn't strike me as the type of guy that we want here...Doesn't he have clinical depression or something? He just strikes me as another Barrett Robbins waiting to happen...

Hawthorne is a decent pick in the second, and I can live with the no name OT in the third, but why would we take Donte Nicholson with Terrence Murphy, Adam Seward, Jaosn Brown, Ronald Bartell, Darrent Williams, and Robert McCune still available? Just an all-around bad Texans mock IMO...

I also wonder if we would actually pass on taking Cadillac Williams if he was still on the bored. Also... what about Erasmus James? (maybe trade down and get him a little later?)

I hope we stay away from James...He's the typical boom or bust guy...If he's healthy, he could end up being Simeon Rice (I've seen the comparison a few places) but he has serious durability issues, and I don't want anymore injury-prone guys on our defense...

Scott Wright updated his mock again today and has us taking:

13. Demarcus Ware OLB Troy St
47. Elton Brown OG Virginia (ahead of Baas and Odell Thurman)
73. Ronald Fields NT Mississippi St
78. Donte Nicholson SS Oklahoma

I think Ware may be a bit of a reach since he played in a small conference and has never played OLB before...I don't want Brown if Baas is still available...Thurman would be a good option, but he doesn't seem like a Texans kinda guy...Our 3rd round would be a waste if these were our picks...

what i am hearing is Ware's stock has been rising. He could be this pick. I think we could trade down with the Chiefs and get an xtra 3rd and add depth to our team. THe chiefs would want to make sure they get who they want. We would then have #15, #47 #73, #78 and another pick in the 70's. We could go Ware at #15. WR #47, #73 CB #78 OL the other pick could be RB or DL this is looking up i think

Not half bad if you switch Baas in for Brown. Though I agree, if Ware's the target, we need to pick up at least a 4th in a trade down for him.

I would seriously doubt that Williams is still on the board when the Texans pick But in the event he is i would expect them to trade down .

On the topic of Dan Cody ...... i have horrible memories of him terrorizing UT's offense on more occasions than i care to think of , He may not be as good a physical specimen DJ but he is a playmaker just the same .... whoever picks him will not be dissapointed .

Demarcus Ware ..... looking @ just size and speed seems comparable to DJ . But like Babin last season comes from a smaller school and would be changing positions .

I wouldnt complain about any of the prospects above being drafted by the Texans given the right circumstances , to get DJ its assumed you would have to trade up to the top 5 . Demarcus Ware would most likely still be around lower in round one than 13 , Possibly as late as 15-19 . As would Cody who could last until the mid 20's of round one .

Cody is a good player, but the big thing I have against him is the fact that he has been diagnosed with clinical depression...I would hate to stay put at 13 and take a guy with mental problems...

i would like to see us trade down and get ware... pick up a 2nd or 3rd... we fill our positions where we need depth or a starter.
