The NFL and NFLPA are on the verge of pushing the NFL Draft back to May and moving the start of the league year to before the NFL Scouting Combine, ESPNs Adam Schefter reports. Both sides have had dialogue about resetting the leagues calendar in an attempt to create a year-long continuum.
The discussed proposal adjusts the current schedule to begin the NFL Scouting Combine in March and free agency at the beginning of April, with the draft taking place in May. The players and the NFLPA were allegedly stalling at the idea of having free agency being backed up, leaving players with uncertain futures.
According to Schefter, the NFL and NFLPA are close to putting these calendar changes in for the next three years.
Crappy move. Could kill TV ratings due to the delay too.
I doubt it. They'd be going up against the NBA playoffs, but more people would still watch the draft than basketball.
Good Gravy! The mock draft threads are going last even longer now.

The move was done solely to boost ratings, as it moves the draft into sweeps ratings period.
Everyone "football" is none too happy about this.
Here is a different opinion. Lists fans, GMs, owners and NFL players as winners. Losers as agents, rookies and scouts. Interesting perspective. The move was done solely to boost ratings, as it moves the draft into sweeps ratings period.

I think the NFL is trying to cut down on the offseason time. NFL free agency would still occur before the draft, and give the NFL some publicity. Then a few weeks later the combine would give them some more pub, and a few weeks after that the actual draft occurs. Rookie camps start about 3-4 weeks after that, and so on and so forth. They just want NFL stuff to be more of a year-round deal.
