nfl draft could get pushed into may

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the NFL and NFLPA are negotiating to move the NFL draft to May and to move the start of the season to before the NFL combine. The deal would see these date changes be in effect for the next three years.

The time between the Super Bowl and the draft already feels long enough. It would make the offseason between May and training camp shorter though.

The NFL and NFLPA are on the verge of pushing the NFL Draft back to May and moving the start of the league year to before the NFL Scouting Combine, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Both sides have had dialogue about resetting the league’s calendar in an attempt to create a year-long continuum.

The discussed proposal adjusts the current schedule to begin the NFL Scouting Combine in March and free agency at the beginning of April, with the draft taking place in May. The players and the NFLPA were allegedly stalling at the idea of having free agency being backed up, leaving players with uncertain futures.

According to Schefter, the NFL and NFLPA are close to putting these calendar changes in for the next three years.

I think the Sports Networks would kill for that too. Analyze the draft, and the Playoff race. Would certainly improve ratings.

How do they think they'd get more ratings competing with shows in sweeps? I already didn't get the move to Thursday and competing with that huge TV night, and wasn't too pleased with the move as it has pretty much killed Saturday draft parties (haven't watched the draft since). Now we get to drag this already too long draft season on into May?
 
It should not make that much difference. Now the combine is Feb 23-26th and NFl is talking about first of March? Current draft began April 25th & pushed back 1-3 weeks.

* NFL free agency would happen in late February or early March

* The NFL Scouting Combine would come sometime after that, likely in mid-March

* The NFL Draft would be pushed anywhere between 1-3 weeks.
 
I think the NFL is trying to cut down on the offseason time. NFL free agency would still occur before the draft, and give the NFL some publicity. Then a few weeks later the combine would give them some more pub, and a few weeks after that the actual draft occurs. Rookie camps start about 3-4 weeks after that, and so on and so forth. They just want NFL stuff to be more of a year-round deal.
