NFL considers adding 2 playoff teams

NFL: AroundTheLeague @NFL_ATL
Goodell said earliest playoff expansion could be implemented is 2015. Competition committee expected to consider adding 2 teams to playoffs

Interesting.

I'd like to see them do away with conferences. Just have 8 division winners and 4 wildcard teams.

That we would most likely never see an 8-8 wildcard get in from one conference while an 11-5 teams misses out in the other conference. If you don't win your division, then the wildcard spots go to the teams with the four best records.

They will never do it, though. I think the the AFL history is wrapped up in the AFC, even though so much has changed since the merger.

I don't like the idea. If they expand the playoffs then just about anyone over .500 will make it. Look at the NBA where the regular season almost doesn't matter.

You just don't need more 9-7, 8-8 teams in the playoffs. And if 2 more playoff teams were already in place, we would have had 8-8 teams the last 2 seasons for sure.

Vinny is right. You water down the meaning of the regular season when half the damn league makes the playoffs.

I know it's about money, but man, it's hard enough for 15-1, 16-0 teams to win a Super Bowl. Now you're going to let more teams in where any given Sunday has a better shot of seeing an 8-8 team knockoff a 14-2? I don't like it.

The NFL playoff format, AS IS, is about as close to perfect as you can get it. Top 2 seeds automatically get rewarded with a trip to the 2nd round, all division winners get to play a home game. Sure a 7-9 division winner gets in and a 10-6 team doesn't occasionally, but that's about the only thing keeping it from being perfect.

Maybe they should just have 2 conferences with no divisions, top 2 get a bye, 3 and 4 play at home, 5th and 6th best record in the conference get in as well. That way you would have the 6 best records in each conference. Of course that screws with your scheduling so there's that.

Just leave it alone, Führer Goodell. It works fine just like it is.

They won't do away with the conferences because it's an easy way to divide up the TV contracts. No conferences and that can become a bit messy. In theory though, I like your idea. Most especially the part about only the best teams make it as wild cards without regard to division location.

But the NFL won't make any drastic changes unless it's very probably a money generator.
