NFL.com article on Carr's contract

GP

Go Texans!
Vic Carucci of NFL.com answered an emailer's question about Carr's contract bonus/option.

Here is the link http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9007668

Highlights:

1. McNair is "fond" of Carr and wants him to be the face of the Texans for years to come.

2. On the other hand, Carr is taking a bit of blame for the offensive woes and McNair is a businessman and it wouldn't surprise Carucci if McNair is having to carefully weigh his options right now considering the Texans will probably own the 1st pick...Carucci says getting Leinart would be (in Carucci's opinion) upgrading at QB.

3. McNair replacing Capers will create a possibly flammable situation because "what if the new HC does not want Carr?"

Pretty good article, but filled with speculation.

I think that Carr is a Kubiak type of quarterback. The past two successful quarterbacks for Denver have been Elway and I guess Plummer. Both are mobile, tough, and strong armed.

Nice post. I am in absolute favor of the Texans exercising the option on David Carr. Leinart is a good QB, maybe not the best in the draft, but the consensus pick and USC QB's are always pretty smart as far as FB IQ goes. Leinhart is not the answer to any problems and he would not be enough of an upgrade over Carr to warrant us not trading out of the spot. Any offensive minded coach worth his salt(KUBIAK) will fall in love with Carr's talents as soon as he sign on the dotted line to be our HC. Carr has more talent than half of the starting QBs in this league and it is killing me to see it squandered each year. Just for reference I was not a Carr fan until last year. I thought we should have taken Peppers with the First pick and Kubiak should have been our guy right off. Carr has shown me over the last two years that he has heart, tenacity, and a chip on his shoulder. those intangibles matched with is talent and then you add a competent HC and you have a top rated QB.

I think Carr has the heart and toughness to be the QB here, goodness knows the guy can take a hit. I expect McNair will exercise the option on Carr then direct the NEW GM to get some O-line help. Carr has developed a lot of bad habits and I hope the NEW COACHING STAFF will be able to work with him during the offseason to correct those mistakes. His footwork is terrible now and he needs to learn to throw the ball away instead of running out of bounds and taking a sack. I've not given up on Carr but he does need to be 'reprogrammed'

I agree with you on all points except for the top rated QB piece. Carr still has a lot of work to do even with a competent HC. Part of Carr's mission, I believe, this year and next year will be to first and foremost win back the hearts and minds of his team mates.

For the LAST time, having an immobile QB with a weaker arm will not be a #$%^ing upgrade at QB with this team and OLine. It's really just common sense.

But that is only your opinion. I like Carr too, but he has become too antsy in the pocket and has happy feet. Doesnt throw the long well at all. Doesn't always see the open receivers and when he does, he doesnt throw the ball on time...

Carr throws a good deep ball when given time.
Now you can't sit there and tell me that in no game this season has Carr had the chance and time to throw a long deep pass to AJ or another wide out... I sit in the shady end zone so I can watch the whole field and have seen many times the reciever was open and Carr did not deliver but offered a dump pass to DD instead.... So don't go there with the O-Line wows on me, it wont carry water in that bucket.

Joe Montana wasn't the most mobile QB and didn't have the strongest arm, but was one of the best in history. The same can be said for Tom Brady.

Carr has not shown the ability to read defenses and certainly has not proven to be very smart. Leinart would be a huge upgrade over Carr in these areas. As would 3 or 4 other QB's in this draft.

Carr has been given more than ample time to prove himself as an NFL quarterback and has failed miserably. Not all of his faults can be blamed on the offensive line. That excuse just doesn't cut it anymore.

Come on, brother. You mean those times he dumped to DD when the receivers were well covered and he was about to get smashed? Have they even RUN a deep route?

Look, I'm down on these guys, too. This problem is not all DC's!

I think Carr should stay. Last year, when the line was blocking well, Carr had really good stats. He should not be graded because the oline in front is not very good.

Theres a huge difference between "wasnt the most mobile" and a guy who wears a knee brace after a huge injury and cant even push off that leg in the pocket without his leg giving out.

Oh and Montana also played with some decent players over his NFL career.

It's also the opinion of most people who know a lick about football and dont slurp up the E"USC"PN kool-aid in regards to Leinart. Are you seriously going to debate that Leinart is mobile and has a big arm?

I just do not understand why anyone would want Leinart in houston. While he might be a good Qb, he will get killed in Houston. Carr is among the most mobile of today's QB. Last season he was third in the NFL and 1st in the AFC in rushiing yards for a QB. Leinart is not mobile at all and actually has a bad knee. If we took Leinart, he would get absolutly decimated behind our swiss cheese line.

In fact I woulod even consider drafting Vince Young next year and then setting up two people behind the Center. Who would play QB is what would confound the D!

Mobility does not equal less sacks (see Mike Vick, Dante Culpepper and Randall Cunningham).

I'll take a QB with pocket presense, ability to read defenses and common sense over one with a strong arm and mobility.

Uhhh, yes it does. If you are mobile, you can move in the pocket. If you arent, you cant. It's easy!

So how do you explain 3 of the most mobile quarterbacks in the league consistently being the leaders in sacks?

We can go over stats all night long if you wish, but I will state it again, and it is a proven fact... mobility does not equal less sacks. In Carr's case, he would be sacked less if he wasn't so "mobile".

Zone blocking..................................

:texflag: Dan Marino almost never got sacked ... even against the 85 Bears , why he got rid of the ball . He probably ran a 5.2 forty yd. dash .

Save all the junk about the WRs and the OL ... the point is he made up his mind and the ball was gone .

Exactly.....

What ever happened to a QB throwing the ball at point A at a given time and the receiver was to be there? It's called a TIMING ROUTE. Carr looks for 2 seconds and dumps the ball off, period/

Now if I had my way, I would draft R Bush, get a good O-Line coach, give carr one last year to get it right or sit him. Pick up the best o-linemen available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Or pick up the best available QB with my 2nd pick. We have to shore the offense period, maybe a new def coach can fix that side of the ball by simply moving back to a 4/3 def line.

I said it last year and will say it again this year, offense needs help and we must fix it now, not later.....

he tried that that against the colts. bradford makes a horible cut, is not in postition to catch the ball. ball gets intercepted. you guys complain. next series he starts dumping the ball off again. and we wonder why.

one thing you got straight. if we draft bush this year we will be in position to draft young next year.(or who ever else we want)

Yep, and then in a few years we will have a young team contending for the super bowl every year. Kinda like the Philadelphia Eagles.

Also need a TE through draft. Thomas outta Texas should be available. Have Young's favorite target in college waiting for him when he gets here. He's damn good too. Almost like a Jason Witten. Maybe not as good of a blocker, but a good receiver. We have Bruener for blocking.

If not him, they NEED a TE

Hey, I go to the games too, and I also see many plays where a receiver is streaking down the field with nobody covering him. Not a ton of times this happened, but enough to where I will agree with the previous poster.

They run deep routes, and DC ignores the long receiver.

We can't have a thread without the Carr apologists piling in. The man-crushes are getting tired.

Jeesh...

You guys are going gonzo on this thread.

Sorry i ever started it :)

Regardless of what each of you "want" to happen after this season, here's the thing that we should all be focusing on:

McNAIR IS GOING TO SHOW US THE TEAM'S FUTURE FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

McNair picked a GM, a HC, and helped set the tone through the GM and the HC when the team began.

Now that it appears to be a debacle....

The owner has to make new decisions about the future of this team.

Will he "tweak" the system and try to just duct tape it like we've seen this past offseason?

Will he fire everybody and start over?

If he starts it all over, who does he get and why?

Will this team focus on the o line, or will they go after the highlight makers?

I'm telling you guys and gals: This offseason is going to be a fireworks show for all of us. The Leinart/Bush/Young fans, which were probably also the Derrick Johnson fans, might get what they want. However, the "o line stinks" crowd might get what they want. And then there's the possibility that NOBODY gets what they want and we have an owner that wants to save money and will therefore just continue to patch the team with journeymen.

At this stage, I think we all agree that we only "really lose" if McNair goes the route of merely patching the team with journeymen. If things remain eerily similar to this season and this past offseason, then we'll see lots of fans jumping ship. Why? Because the owner sets the tone, and this owner better be thinking about real solutions and not the same patch-up job that's been served up like cold pizza this year. For an owner to ignore the fans and ignore the empty seats, and just keep doing what he WANTS to do regardless of the sinking ship he's on...then that's when you see smart fans realizing that loyalty to the team is a death warrant every year. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if Carr stays, and what else happens...that's for sure.

Well said... this post made it worth reading all the other redundant Carr haters/lovers posts...

Well I also think this offseason should be interesting. I mean with all the components we do have right now and possibilities out there, how can it not be. I do think that Capers should go, because he's been ineffective so far with what's been given to him. Carr, I would like to see him play with a decent line and good coaching at least one yr. if he still plays poorly (which I doubt)then the qb situation should be addressed next yr. #1 pick in the draft is a win win situation if handled right I think. If we get Bush and keep him then we add another weapon to our arsenal but pressure would really be on the Texans to work on the o-line and defense. I have faith that can be taken care of. If we trade down then we can vastly improve on our o-line and defense and work with the weapons we already have, Carr, Johnson, Davis, Mathis, Morrency whatever. Which can also be great. I think on defense what we need is a linebacker or a lineman thats a leader I think thats what's been lacking. Last yr. Sharper was here and he was a leader so was Glenn but they're gone now I think thats something we really need. I love D-Rob but he isnt in a position to really take command of the defense on the field like a lineman or linebacker well thats my opinion. The o-line is not as bad as everybody makes it out to be they do have potential, but I think lack guiadance. Discipline on the line and technique are very important and the fact that the line is getting shuffled around so much kinda negates any progress. Then again a stud lineman never hurts, but I think it's the coaching that needs upgrading. Overall though I think the offseason will be very interesting. One more thing, all this bigotry on the board really serves no purpose, I mean yeah Carr has flaws the man aint ever going to be perfect but he's our quarterback and he has heart. Like him or not you should still back him up because he represents us, the guy has class he doesnt talk down on his line or receivers. He deals with it as fans we should also have class because we also represent Houston.

Keep Carr. Let the new HC/GM improve the O-line. At the same time, Carr needs to step up more as a vocal leader/LEADER of the offense. Carr should step up as more of a leader now. There are still 9 games left - sure would be nice if they just all of a sudden won all 9

I have faith that Kubiak could turn Carr into an excellent quarterback once the OL is addressed. Ferguson and Jean-Gilles, we need you.

for the most part, this is true. However you have to take into consideration that teams with mobile quarterbacks pick offensive linemen like the Houston Texans do. pass protection isn't very high on their list.

and just being a mobile QB doesn't really get you much. You have to be able to make plays on the run, ala Favre, Young, and McNabb. But even then, a good line is still a big plus, ala Jake Plummer. But they don't have to be Larry Allens, or Willie Roafs.

I never thought I would say this, but wonger is absolutely correct in this case. Mobility does not equal less sacks, in fact it can get a QB in trouble when he relies on his mobility rather than his reads or his arm to make plays.

You guys talk like the QB is a machine. There's a lot more than good mechanics and arm strength and mobility that goes into the position, and Carr has almost none of it. It amazes me that people think of him as a serious QB in this league.

I give up trying to argue the point, but pls put a note in your diary: Carr is going to get worse, not better.

I'll argue it. Just because he didn't have 150+ rushing attempts this season doesn't mean he isn't "mobile". Wow, a QB who doesn't have impressive speed, there's something new. I guess you better tell Tom Brady and Peyton Manning to hang it up, then. Can he get out of the pocket and make plays? Absolutely.

Contrary to what most people who diss Leinart say, he can throw the ball. He doesn't exhibit a canon, but I've seen him put enough juice on the ball when he needs to, even after his surgery.

The hype surrounding the top 3 guys is much deserved, including Leinart. He's performed at a high level for 3 consecutive seasons.

Amazing. I guess you didn't see that shot he took in the Rose Bowl? You know, where he got the crap knocked out of him and went on to finish the game with impressive numbers against a good UT defense? Or perhaps you missed the game against ASU where his chin got split open came back in with 7 stitches in it. What more does he need to do to be considered "tough", take a bullet in the knee and drop 400yds against Ohio State?

I am waiting for Vince to get shot by a crazy fan and then go on to put up 325 yards and 3 TDs in the second half to lead his team to the Super Bowl, all in his rookie year. Apparently, stranger things have happened.
