Next Year's 1st Rd Pick Most Important Pick in Franchise History

Lord Bills

Destruction
IMO its the most important pick in Texan history. More important than Carr and Dre pick. We still have enough talent to make a quick turnaround in one year.

It doesnt help that this upcoming draft has multiple game changing franchise QBs (Manziel, Bridgewater, Mariota, McCarron, Murray). I wish there was one clear definitive best QB so it makes the pick easier. Its important we have the right people making this decision and that means Kubiak cannot be involved because if you look at his track record of picking QBs here in Houston, IT HAS BEEN A COMPLETE AND UTTER DISASTER.

Hopefully the combine can give people a clearer picture as to who is better but you just really never know. Will Rick Smith still be here to make the pick for whoever the coach is at that point or will we have a complete overhaul of the front office?

Its imperative we have the right people making the right choice because picking the wrong guy can set this franchise back for a solid half decade.

I say we trade back and still get Johnny Football ......... :P or a QB in the fist round

The only reason we should trade back is if we plan on going into next season with keenum or schaub at qb

We can trade back if we really feel comfortable with whatever qb is gonna fall to us, i don't think we can afford to miss out on a qb we really like to trade back and get picks to build on the future.. REALLY? That isn't gonna help us much next year

All these Rick smith haters, you really want to trade out of a top pick where it is obvious who to take for more picks and expect him to hit?

If the Rams end up with the 2nd overall pick, I don't think anyone will want to pay heavily for #1 overall. We might be better off just taking Clowney/Bridgewater and going from there.

Agreed, except a decade would be more likely.

Hopefully if Rick stays they lock him in a closet before each pick. I've got no faith in Rick as a talent evaluator. I mean look at his record picking DB's since he's been here. Sad really and to think he played DB in college. Do you really want a guy like this running the draft as a Texans fan?

Except it isn't so obvious which QB to take .... There is no obvious Luck or Manning in this draft , there are a bunch of guy's who could be really good or total busts and at this point your guess is as good as Snoopy's as to who among them is a good one or not.

I hope this thread isn't premature. I still have confidence in Smubiak to screw this up.

Only GTD you get your pick is#1. Skins gave up (3) 1st rd and (1) 2nd rd to go from #6 to #2. Can't imagine #1 not taking that same deal.

If we're looking at the combine to decide which QB we're taking then we're already screwed...

CLE probably ends up with what? #8 or so plus IND's pick, around #25?

How would y'all feel about moving from #1 to #8 and picking up #25 plus CLE's #40 and first rounder for the next year?

At #8 you're probably choosing from Cam Erving OT, Khalil Mack OLB, or Justin Gilbert CB. Or maybe you roll the dice on another QB there and feel okay about reaching for it since you already picked up extra picks.

Just rolling around theories in my head...

clevelands two 1st and two 3rds. i would be happy with.

you could potentially find 4-6 starters in one draft. and the draft would turn from being the most important to the best draft in texan history.

then ... :trophy:

ahhh who am i kidding :kubepalm:
:kitten:

Why not? The Rams need a QB. Bradford isn't the longterm answer for them, and I could definitely see the Rams paying two 1sts to go from the 2nd or 3rd to the 1st pick. Bridgewater is a legit QB, and could likely develop into a franchise QB. People will pony up picks for him. I'd rather the Texans take him though.

Why would they make that trade if they would pick right after us? If we're set on Bridgewater, they would have to make a ridiculous trade to convince us to skip him (which they would be unlikely to offer and unlikely for us to accept if we want Teddy that badly), and if we're not they can just draft him right after we grab Clowney.

True, I feel good about a lot of these qbs though.. Bridgewater, Mariota, Manziel, and Hundley

One or all of them could fail in the NFL

I obviously wanna see the Texans get more athletic at qb after years of watching schaub

the more i think about this draft the more i think WE HAVE TO TAKE A QB

I like Keenum, but, even with all the problems on this team that are not his fault, if he can't win enough games to keep us from drafting a QB, we should draft a QB. If he then can't beat out that drafted QB in preseason, then he shouldn't be our starter...

QB is just tooooooooooooo freakin' important for us to just act like, "Oh, we don't need one. Whatever we got'll work."

i was a big keenum supporter but he hasnt shown enough for the texans to say the QB problems are solved.

Texans need to draft a QB and let them open up the competition in training camp.

That was a unique scenario though. The Skins gave up that much because they absolutely fell in love with RG3. There is no Luck or RG3 prospect this year. Maybe a team covets Bridgewater or Clowney that much and is willing to trade up, but I have a hard time seeing that kind of trade happening again. Not to that extent.

I could see a scenario with swapped 1st and an extra 2nd or 3rd plus a 1st and late round pick next year. You never know for sure though. Teams do stupid stuff come draft time.

If what u say is true about bridgewater, why would you trade that pick? For all the flack washington took in giving up the 2 1st rd picks for rg3, they won the division despite their best wr missing like 8 games and a terrible defense. Meanwhile the rams will finish about .500 and miss the playoffs for like the 12th straight year. Oh yeah, how are brian quick and janoris jenkins playing now days?

if we lose to the jags on thursday, then we have bridgewater locked up. we have to take him dont we? i hate his level of competition, but you just cannot succeed without a top pick qb. not a andrew luck/griffin prospect, but stafford/bradford ish.

wish there was a top flight qb, but id still pull the trigger on bridgewater.

Your thread will probably be merged to one of the other threads discussing this and of course you will be blasted but to answer your question, my opinion is no. None of the QBs we have discuss are "can't miss" but Bridge is probably closest. I like Keenum and how he seems to correct his mistakes as season progresses. We know this system which may or may not be in place 2014 can win games and championships with a good but not elite QB (Schaub). There is also concern about Bridge's numerous hits to his throwing hand and arm over the years.

My preference is a trade down with Cleveland (see my mock thread) which should bring a huge haul as Mariota and Hundley announced a return to school.

as far as the 1st pick goes, I don't think it will be locked up until after the completion of week 17 or the fat lady sings, which ever comes first. there are still 4 games to play and I still have all the confidence Smubiak will screw this up.

theres a bridgwater thread? my bad. and i looked for one:kubepalm: i wish keenum was the answer, but man he looks lost on some obvious blitzes sometimes.

lol. the only threat i see to getting bridgewate is jacksonville and minnesota.

FWIW, Bridgewater has the best release & is accurate as any QB since Marino. Huge upside, different player than Luck or RGIII people are fast to judge around here. Don't even have to throw him to the wolves w/Case as starter, let him polish & learn NFL systems & defenses.

have any insight into why he hasnt put up bigger numbers against lower competition? conn, hou, memphis, kentucky.

Marino? LOL

Bridgewater could only dream of having Marino's arm strength. Accuracy without elite arm strength = Tony Romo

The post above is what bothers me about Teddy, he doesn't come up big in big games. Teddy = good not great pro.

The worst thing a franchise can do is reach for a QB, look at Oakland and Russell, Minnesota/Ponder, Tampa/Freeman/NJY/Sanchez etc.... all of these franchises have been set back 5 yrs by those picks and it will take another 5 yrs if they get lucky to train another QB to become a SB contender. That = a decade.

This is what happened with Carr and big part of the reason the Texans are where they are today. The only reason the Texans didn't fall off into the abyss is that Schaub was a very good QB had already learned in ATL and stepped in and led this franchise. Too bad he hurt his foot and lacked arm strength. The lack of arm strength is why he was a backup QB to begin with I guess.

Anyway I guess by now you know this time around I want a QB with elite arm strength and a great work ethic. (BTW, I've read Teddy has a very good work ethic.)

When you say he doesn't have elite armstrength, what exactly do you mean? Does he not throw the ball at a fast enough speed? Does he not have long enough range? Can he not throw off the run when he can't plant his feet? Cause when I watch him, arm strength isn't an issue in my mind.

I like this kid, he has a good personality, seems very well put together, has a lot of compassion and humbleness in his interviews. There are no thug or ****ty lifestyle concerns like Cam Newton, Jamarcus Russell or JFF. He can definitely be the face of a franchise in the NFL.

As for his football skills, I don't know what you would not like about him. He has a good pocket presence, he often steps up into the pocket rather than rolling out, he can scramble away from defenders, he always keeps his eyes downfield looking for WRs that are open, he anticipates WRs routes and often throws to where they are going to be open, he can extend plays with his feet, he can run for 1st downs, but he's always a pass-first kind of guy. He's a great prospect overall, and I'm on board with drafting him.

I watched a few of his longest throws and it seems he can hit about 55 yards in the air with a long bomb, which is pretty standard for QB prospects like this. I timed a couple of his throws and did the math on the distance to figure out how fast his passes are, and I had him getting about 54 mph, which is also pretty standard. Though a radar gun would be a much better source :)

What's not to like about him? Why shouldn't we expect him to develop into a top 10 QB in the NFL?

The post above is what bothers me about Teddy, he doesn't come up big in big games. Teddy = good not great pro.

The Sugar Bowl vs. Florida was probably the biggest game of his career and he played pretty darn good against the #5 defense in the country.

His biggest game of the year this year was against UCF. They lost by a FG, but he went 29/38 for 341 yards and 2 TD's.

If anything, his numbers against bad teams are worse than his numbers against good teams. The offense tends to come out lethargic against teams they should annihilate. That has a lot to do with him but also a lot to do with the coaching staff.

how sad is it for a franchise to have 3, #1 picks in just over a decade.

edit: what's even sadder is the first 2 don't even play for the team anymore.

Bridgewater has all the talent you need from a QB. When the draft process heats up and whoever our gm is has the opportunity to put a full scouting report with interviews together the only question is, do you think he will become a franchise guy. Not can he, but will he. If that answer is yes, take him and never look back.

Thank you for posting response, I'm out of pocket so to speak to take that much time. I remember Marino @ Pitt & thought he would be a top 5 pick but you just never know what arises for a prospect & his journey to the Draft/NFL. That's what is so compelling about it. I don't throw these things around loosely either. He is simply amazing to watch in the pocket. He targets tight windows & zipps ball on a dime. The only thing is Texans must hope for is a stud rt in rd. 2 then shore up the middle so he has an actual pocket to work out of.

I wonder what Keenum could do with an actual pocket to work out of + having a healthy Foster?

Maybe if they invest enough money on a QB we'll find out? Seems to me they expect Schaub/Case to boot out of trouble only problem is everyone knows it's coming.

Ok ive made up my mind:

Clowney it is.

I do not want a sexually confused cross dresser as our franchise QB. I dont know about you guys, but that's just me.

Bridgewater is the next Kerry Rhodes.

NO THANKS!!!

Maybe you should get over your homophobia? As others have pointed out, Bridgewater did this as a joke for a gender relations course for extra credit; if anything, the fact that he would go along with this makes me respect him a bit more.

The rest of your post aside, I also would prefer Clowney.
