New NFLDraftCountdown Mock 3/16/2005

I would love for this to happen. If you QB is the team, ala McNair, Vick, McNabb, you need to protect him. And this would be an excellent upgrade.

I wouldn't be totally dissappointed with the picks, but didn't people on here think we need a C more than a G?? Oh, and they don't have us drafting on the defensive line in none of the first two rounds :um: If we are gonna draft offense in the first two rounds, I would at least take a TE in round two idonno: We still don't have any consistency at that position and I know Carr definitely could use a TE to throw too idonno:

looking at next year where do the Texans pick? I'm thinking somewhere between picks #17 & #23 if the Texans have improved their offensive line woes. here is a list of the DT's who should be availalbe in next years class, too bad we'll have to wait until next year but when assessing our current needs it is useful to forecast future draft class assests.

McKinney takes a lot of heat in the boards. However, it's difficult to isolate the interior line. Pitts, Weigert, McKinney all struggled to hold the pocket last year. As far as straight whiffs go, Pitts and Weigert both had quite a few in pass protection. However, both of them can be dominate run blockers-Weigert more consistantly than Pitts.

I think drafting a LT is a big mistake. Wand and Wade are not liabilities and they're both young and relatively healthy. Furthermore, neither would be a good fit at G. With other needs, drafting a LT seems ill-advised to me. I'd rather spend the first pick on defense or possibly TE and then draft interior line help in the second and/or third rounds.

Maybe this is too much of a generalization, but assuming a player is good
enough to play tackle, I'd think he'd be effective as a guard ? Isn't it moving
from guard to tackle where the problems occur ?

Ask Chester Pitts...

I'm not sure if that's where problems occur but I do remember reading an article in Sportingnews (half a year ago) where it talked about guards and how the best guards are now tackles moved inside...

from my understanding the one thing you dont want from a guard, is someone extremely tall where the QB can't get the ball out, so a 6'7 guard isn't the best thing, so unless the tackle you move inside is really tall, the skills are very similar.

first i think that if Barron was drafted in the first round i think he could beat out seth wand for the starting LT position by mid-season...second if we do draft barron first i don't see us drafting another o-lineman til the second day so here's my scenerio

1st. alex barron LT
2nd. mike patterson DE
3rd. kirk morrison ILB
3rd. ronald bartell CB

barron would take over the LT position and be an upgrade over wand

move smith or walker to NT and replace them with patterson at DE

morrison could provide much needed depth at ILB

bartell is one of the most underrated prospects in this draft could be better than faggins with some coaching

If the draft did go that way then I would e dissapointed that we couldnt snag a defensive player in one of the 1st 2 rounds but can you imagine how good our offense would be in the very near future.

Barron Brown McKinney Wiegert Wade

Oh and just think of the depth we would have at gaurd and tackle, then we still could get Jason Brown or Vince Carter to play C with our last 4th round pick.

After a 5 week hiatus, they finally updated their mock...They have us taking

1. Alex Barron (with DJ going at 12)
2. Ernest Shazor SS Micigan :thumbdown
3A Ronald Fields NT Mississippi St idonno:
3B Lance Mitchell ILB Oklahoma :thumbup

How would yall feel if day one were to unfold this way?

Also, I tried to edit the date on the thread title, but I couldn't edit the original post...If one of the mods would help with that, it would be much appreciated...

depressed

I would be saying "OMG we took Barron in the first in one of the decades strongest Olineman drafts" then "OMG we passed on Elton Brown, Luis Castillo, and Chris Canty in the second round"

then

"OMG what the heck are we doing in the third! who is Ronald Fields! and why are we taking Lance Mitchel when we could get Boomer Grigsby in the 4th"

then id just start repeating "trust in charlie, trust in charlie, trust in charlie" until I could breath again.

I would be pretty disapointed.

I would go with something like this. I know it looks offense heavy, but I went with value, with a little need mixed in.

1. Alex Barron, OT, Florida St.
2. Elton Brown, OG, Virginia
3. Ciatrick Fason, RB, Florida
3. Corey Webster, CB, L.S.U.

And on my Barron pick; my thinking is that you cant get a Pace, or any other good/great LT unless you draft one. Or want to give 2 first round picks for one...

all these Mocks are only so useful, there will be lots of trading positions because teams will be more inclined because of fair value & team needs.

therefore the Texans do have a relistic chance to trade down or trade up as all other teams do. basing this & using Countdown's Mock here are a couple possible trades and its affect on who the Texans aquire via the draft.

Texans trade with Rams (the Rams owe us & they want Carlos Rogers who is still on the board @ #13 but gone by the time they pick) in exchange for their 1st pick #19 and the extra early 3rd pick #66.

with the 19th pick the Houston Texans select David Pollack

The Texans are not finsihed trading however, they work a deal with Philly for their early 2nd rd pick #35 for the Texans 2nd rd pick #47 plus extra 3rd rd pick aquired from the Rams #66.

with the 35th pick the Houston Texans select David Baas

The Texans still have two 3rd round picks left & select-

#73 Fabien Washington, CB Nebraska

#78 Vincent Jackson, WR Nothern Colorado

:thumbup

I like your idea of trading down, and the trades work well IMO...

Pollack would be a solid pick, even though I want Peek on the field as much as possible...I think Pollack's best fit in the NFL will be as an OLB in a 3-4...

I would LOVE to add Baas...If we could only pick one player in the draft, I believe Baas would be that guy, even over DJ, Benson, anybody you can name...

Washington ran a 4.25 40 at the combine, which sent his stock into late-1st early-2nd territory...If he's there at 73, he'd clearly be the BPA, but I doubt he lasts that long...

I see Jackson as a developmental WR prospect who would thrive in red-zone situations, but may not be much of a threat between the 20s until he polishes his route-running so he could get separation due to his lack of speed...

The countdown has us taking Lance Mitchell, ILB with pick #78 in the 3rd round. He is coming back from a torn ACL year before last and could be a steal since he was once projected as a 1st rounder in 04.

What do yall think of him? He seems a little like a poor man's DJ Johnson. Maybe his speed will increase once he heals more?

Lance Mitchell

College: Oklahoma Height: 6'-2"
Position: Inside Linebacker Weight: 247
Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.81

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths: Good athletic ability...Great size...Very strong...Great tackler who likes to hit...A force against the run...Makes plays from sideline-to-sideline...Extremely productive.

Weaknesses: Coming back from a torn ACL and long-term health and durability might be a question mark...Can be too aggressive at times...Only average speed...Was production aided by such a strong supporting cast?

Notes: Transferred to Oklahoma from the City College of San Francisco and made an impact right away...Was on his way to a spot in Round One of the '04 Draft before a serious knee injury...Didn't look to be all the way back as a senior and saw his stock drop.

D-Rek, just to let you know Wright has us picking Shazor in the second round...looks like the Vikings grab Brown...I would still like to see what Earl has this year before grabbing a SS early in the draft. Is anyone else worried about Brown possibly being a little kookoo? :hmmm:

I agree with letting Earl have the SS spot for now. I rather draft a CB than a safety. Even though we did lose McCree and Brown so some depth at safety would be nice.

I would be happy with Lance Mitchell at 78 because after next season, our depth at ILB will be average at best...I would even agree with Boomer Grigsby here...I'll leave it up to Cass, but I like the idea of ILB with one of our 3rds.

As far as Shazor goes, he's going to be a good SS, but at 47, I think Elton Brown is the BPA, and he would certainly fill a need...He could come in and compete with Weigert and he goes down, Brown could step in and be a good starter for his first year or two...

I cant imagine charlie letting dj fall to 12 and letting him get away, if he were available at 12, i think we'd trade up that extra pick and grab him.

Bengals G Eric Steinbach is 6’6”
Skins G Derrick Dockery is 6’6”
Bucs G Matt Stinchcomb is 6’6”

The Ravens LT Jonathan Ogden (6’8”) started his NFL career at LG. Cards’ LT Leonard Davis (6’6”) played his 1st 3 seasons at RG. One of the better college guards this year, Mississippi’s Marcus Johnson, measured 6’6” at the combine. If you can play, you can play. Wand’s lack of strength, not his size, is the big negative in attempting to play guard. Of course, that’s the big negative he has playing tackle.

I like this idea alot more than drafting Barron in the First.

I just don't think Barron will stay on the board till 13 but who knows.
If he is there then by all means we should take him cant hurt to have 2 300 + LT's especially one that is as athletic as he is.
With 4.83 speed he might recover a fumble run 80 yards and score a touchdown. crazy:
Well probably not but quickness is essential in a LT.

If we trade down in the first i think we might be able to go a little bit further down and look at a guy named Khalif Barnes from Washington. I would take him over pollack any day. I am not really that high on pollack and i think this kid is going to be good and might be able to push wand this year and take over in 2 if wand doesn't pan out. other than that i like the idea of these trades too

I think he'll end up going to the Lions 10th overall...They just lost their starting RT to Miami and they don't have much O-Line depth...

Just curious, but have you seen Barnes play before? All the reports I hear about him are that he needs to add bulk, but his upside is through the roof...Brown and Barron are more finished products, but Khalif has the potential to be better than both of them...

i only watched one game that washington plasyed and i really wasn't paying attention to him. but i have read a lot just as you have about his upside and potential. some people think once he bulks up he will be better then barron. but they say he still has room to add mass and muscle.

I don't think Casserly believes Alex Barron is worthy of the 13th pick. If . . .if he is able to trade down, and Barron is still available, then maybe . . . but i'd be surprised if Barron is the highest rated player on his draft board when it comes time for him to pick.

BTW, I just wish all of you could have heard Casserly's interview yesterday on NFL Sirius Radio. Some of the comments that he made were very very enlightening as to the offseason moves that have been made so far.

Can you fill is in on what he said?

a lot of "draft gurus" don't seem to realize that the texans are content with letting glenn earl have another year to improve...i've said this before i think wand is the weak link in our line i like the barron pick...second round i'd rather us take mike patterson, david baas(if available), chris spencor, fabian washington, one of the inside linebackers, or even dmarcus ware...with the third round pick of lance mitchell i'm left scratching my head because didnt' we want to get faster on defense...lance has been running a 4.8 to 4.9 40...why pick him we could pick robert mccune who has been running a 4.5...mccune is a better ILB in my opinion and is much much faster

Wow, I didn't realize Mitchell was that slow; there have been reports that he's still not 100% from his torn ACL, though...I do like the idea of McCune moreso than Mitchell...The only knock I've heard on him is that he's 26, but I can always show love to a soldier :thumbup ...

I have Mitchell slated in 3rd round. McCune is a tweener. he could go in the 2nd or 3rd.

infantrycak said:
In what way is McCune a tweener?--he played ILB in college and is projected to play ILB in the NFL and is LB sized at 245 lbs.

on all boards i have seen him he has been falling like a rock. I originally was a 2nd with me. Now i have him in the mid 3rd. He was the 6th highest ILB on my board. I think he is now #7

Maybe you are using tweener differently--I am not talking about where he goes in the draft. Tweener in my mind is a guy something in between a DE and OLB--see Jason Babin, Antwan Peek & Shawne Merriman.

yeah i meant tweener as in roundes. He is been droping. I see him as inside ONLY. He is fast dont get me wrong. its just i see him falling to top of 3rd round when 2 months ago i had him in 2nd

While we're on the subject of ILBs, a name I've seen rising up draft charts is Jordan Beck out of Cal Poly...He's 6'2" 231 and ran a 4.45 at the Cal Poly pro day...He could stand to add a little bulk, but I think he could end up being a 4th or 5th round steal...

No, he played ILB at Cal Poly, which is a Division I-AA school, so he's been flying under most people's radars...He won the Division I-AA Player of the Year award last season...

Scott Wright updated his mock today and, well, I still don't like the results (don't know why I don't make a new thread, but oh well)...

1. Alex Barron - I'm torn between him and Cadillac, who he has going 14th...Barron is probably the BPA, so I don't totally hate the pick...

2. Odell Thurman - I like this pick and all, but Baas is still available, and as much as I like Thurman, I think Baas would make a bigger impact...

3A Ronald Fields - Still have no idea who he is...This would be one of those "trust in Casserly" picks...

3B Donte Nicholson - I don't like this pick at all...Jason Brown, Rian Wallace, and Chris Henry are all still available and are all better players than Nicholson...

Here's the LINK to the site...How would yall feel if this was our 1st day?

D-ReK said:

I would be disapointed.

This is how I would draft.

1. Cadillac Williams, RB, Auburn
2. David Baas, OG, Michigan
3. Chris Henry, WR, West Virginia
3. Rian Wallace, OLB, Temple

I know its heavy offense, but there isnt a better D prospect at these spots.

everytime I see a Mock Draft with the Texans taking Alex Barron I get a sick feeling, its aggravated when the next three picks are Cadillac, Carlos Rogers & Thomas Davis. other teams don't seem to suffer the same fate & it smells like favortism or worse vial evil incarnate ( :heh: ) for instance in our Mock II Draft I'm selecting for the Vikings, somehow Braylon slips to #7 we both take him then @ #18 Erasmus James, in other words a perfectly exacuted game plan quite the oppossite of what they contrieve for the Texans.

i would not pass on Cedric or Cadillac.

another disturbing paradox is what the Browns do with that #3 pick, they are in the drivers seat for those interested in Derrick Johnson, I believe that the Browns will entertain offers. ideally I see them trading with the worst team in the top 10 for that teams next years #1 pick (remember the Winslow pick last year?) & they take Alex Smith the Browns need a franchise QB for their new system and with Winslow in place they need to build around him then they would hope the team who trades up winds with a top 3 pick next year and they would be in the Reggie Bush sweepstakes.

Savage GM seems intent on building the team 1st (i.e. trading for Dilfer) then drafting the Franchise QB. Look for them to go either Merriman or D Johnson.
