New Mock Draft

11.Houston Texans: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

The Texans are switching to the 3-4 and are going to need to draft a linebacker early in the draft. The only viable option at this point is Robert Quinn but being out of football for a full year can hurt your draft stock. Amukamara is a very good cornerback while he doesn’t have elite quickness and speed to be a true shutdown corner he is still going to be a very good starter.

could be a deal breaker for me. Quinn, jackson, Pollard, Wilson.....Robinson before them...do we really want/need another 1 of these non-speedy types of guys in the secondary? Someone convince me this guy will be different b/c i really don't want them to take another cb in the 1st & i saw most of that OSU game, & i wasn't too impressed. & its not like NFL WR's are gonna be a step down or something.

Repped

Not thanks to another 1st rd CB without elite speed. I've suffered enough watching Jackson get burned last yr.

Hey Guys,

We posted a new mock draft: http://www.nflroughdraft.com/node/3

Also, I've enjoyed stopping by here to talk football with you guys every year around the draft so I posted a link to Texans Talk on the site. Hope that's alright.

your mock makes it truly official, the draft is around the corner, HERE WE GO!

lets just start with the first overall projected pick of Fairley which both you & Lance agree on will go to Carolina. Is he the bpa in the draft along with their biggest need? is he really that close to Suh in terms of talent?

Have no problem with Peterson going to Denver, as long as Texans bring Bailey to Houston. hahahaha

I can see Buffalo going DT like Marcel Dareus, but I really expect Fariley to wind up #3.

Bowers is my highest rated player in the draft. It would be a stroke of luck should Bowers fall in hapless Bengals lap.

Von Miller has become the sexy pick @ #5.

Colt getting Jordan Shipley back in a go to WR like AJ Green seems like a good fit.

I never thought I would see Cameron Jordan this high, but it makes sense keep him in the Bay to add some pass rush from the 5 technique in their 3-4.

Would Tennessee really consider going Cam Newton after Vince Young? Gabbert is the better choice.

Lance had Bowers dropping to the Cowboys, you have them taking a LT, which they need, I just wonder if its too high, maybe a perfect opportunity to trade back.

It sure seems Washington is known for taking defensive players early, year after year and yet still they can't stop anybody (sounds like the Texans). Have a gut feeling Shaney wants an elite WR who has size to help his QB, whoever that may be? Big proponent of Julio Jones.

The Texans. Here we go. Is Prince a cover two CB if so Texans are already blessed with a number of nickel/zone db's, unless Prince runs a sub 4.4 I'm questioning going secondary numero uno again. Now if projected FS we'll talk. Texans need pass rush in the worst way, best case is to trade down, add an extra 2nd so they can maneuver to pick up two starters on defense, pass rusher DE/OLB & run stopper NG/NT.

Again, rep for your mock, thanks for remembering us :handshake:

Prince is an elite cover 2 CB prospect.

If he has a decent safety deep he will be awesome.

Given the Texans have never had a decent safety (Marcus Coleman is probably as good as we got) that doesn't really describe the Texans.

The next question I guess is what kind of coverage does Philips intend to us primarily.

Great speed isn't necessary to be a great CB, it's nice to have but not a must have factor. If a CB has a good back pedal, good hips, quick reactions, takes good angles, studies the game etc. they can be a great CB. Nnamdi Asomugha ran a 4.45 in the 2003 combine, a very average/slow number. Now he's almost 30 yoa. and plays in pads and helmet. Do you really think his game day speed is 4.45? Yet he's still considered amoungst the best CB's in the game. Brice McCain ran a 4.33 in the 2009 combine, great speed, and he sucks.

Speed is a nice thing to have but it's not a must have factor.

i get that, but most great cbs do have elite speed or quickness & the above breakdown says that prince has neither..not a good combo for cb's imo. Not saying you can't be successful, i'm just weary of picking a guy with these red flags.

In addition to this, we've all seen the combine video of Jackson backpedaling & flipping his hips smoothly in the drills...what those drills don't show is him being unable to keep his feet under him; something he couldn't do this past year. I don't know, we'll see.

Pressure on the QB magically solves many of our secondary issues. It is amazing how that happens. Do not misunderstand me though our DB's suck

Trade #11 to Patriots who HAVE to make a splash & appease fans for # 28 and #33. Get CB Brandon Harris (may be gone) or Aaron Williams UT and then draft FS Duenta Willams NC with your #33.

Dunta had pretty good speed.

But besides that, I don't think you can shy away from a guy because he is somewhat similar to another corner you have had in the past that didn't work out.

Plenty of corners have been very good with out having "elite speed".

I hope they evaluate all possibilities.

I think that depends on your perception.

Some folks think Jackson is just a bad player, while some think that it's possible that he can be a good corner.

And really, when we're talking about evaluating DB talent, you almost have to ask yourself if some of the guys we've had could have played better with more competent coaches/systems in place.

There's only one CB/S in this draft that the Texans should target at #11 (Peterson) and he's not going to be there at #11.

Trading down, getting more picks and drafting A.Williams. (Who I think is just as good as Prince.) would be the way to go. Williams showed what he could do his soph yr. When UT's DL put pressure on the QB.

Last yr UT's defense quit. After seeing how horrible their offense was. It should be interesting to see how Williams does at the combine.

Eh Texas was still pretty solid defensively against the pass. They got gashed by the run but they had some good DBs. Williams and Curtis Brown (2nd/3rd round prospect) did a solid job.

I'm a big fan of Williams. I think he goes late first or early in the second before our pick. And I think he would definitely make a better man cover guy than Amukamara.

Nice draft, Prince would be a great pick for the Texans if he's there. By the way, The Lions traded a TE for Alphonso Smith. He wasn't a waiver pickup.

The Lions signed Alphonso Smith during the year because of how poorly their secondary was playing (Smith was released by the Broncos who also need help in their secondary). Harris is a very solid cornerback prospect. He has very good quickness and he has a lot of leadership qualities that Jim Schwartz wants in his defensive players.

Question about Patrick Peterson ? if you saw the Bowl game he and LSU played vs the Aggies, did you think he was that impressive ? I saw part of the game and was not overally impressed with him ?

I wasn't impressed with him in a game earlier this past year against Alabama. He had a tough time with Julio Jones. Overall though, he had an excellent career and his measurables are off the charts.

Had a tough time with Jeff Fuller also. Another workout wonder in my opinion.

Do not know much about fuller where is he projected to go

If he has a good senior year then I would say he can do no worse than the second round in next year's draft. Great size, great hands, and above average speed.
