New Look D

hou059

Waterboy
In 2006 a new look on the defenseive side is needed. Here is my list:

1. change to 4-3 (linbackers in a 3-4 are usualluy huge and our inside linebackers are suited more for a 4-3, especially with that speed)

2. clean up secondary and d-line (Gary Walker and Marcus Coleman who reminds me more and more of Matt Stevens every time I see this guy play should be let go in the off-season. Make room for Travis Johnson and either play Earl or Brown at Coleman's vacancy or aquire a S through draft or FA)

3.New D-Line ( I am thinking Smith at DE, Payne and Johnson at DT and Babin moves back to his normal position, DE.)

3-4 works...with the right people but we don't have what we need, weak secondary no ruch on the line and small linebackers don't equal success!

Gary Walker is playing his **** off, I sincerely hopes he stays healthy, and stays on the team.

Our personel is better suited for the 3-4 right now. R. Smith is not a DE in a 4-3 defense, he's a DT. Babin and Peek are undersized DEs better suited for OLBs. We'd need to pick up alot of NFL type DEs before we could switch over. Plus who's going to play MLB? Wong and Greenwood would be OLBs in a 4-3.

I wonder what he could be like if he was completely healthy all year?
all you have to do is look back at his pro bowl year. His shoulder injury had nothing to do with conditioning. Neither did his turf toe a while back.

You know that conditioning the toes is of critical importance to the off-season program and Gary Walker always skips out on the toe excercises Vinny. ;)

If We Switch to the 4-3 then we would be in Great Shape..

Everybody talks about how Babin and Peek are undersized.. WHO CARES!?!? Those are the positions that made them solid players and college so KEEP them there..

Simeon Rice - 6'5 268
Dwight Freeney 6'1 268
Javon Kearse - 6'4 265
Ogunleye - 6'4 260
Jason Babin - 6'2 259
Antwan Peek - 6'3 250

KGB - 6'4 250
John Abraham - 6'4 250
Robert Mathis - 6'3 235

So all this Undersized crap should cease, cause as you can see all the top DEs in the are right around the same size as our guys give or take 10 pounds, And if they are really that "undersized" .. how hard is it to get those guys to gain 7 Pounds in the offseason.. how long is the off-season like Feb- Aug right??

Come on now I gain 13 pounds of pure muscle (From 178 to 191) and dropped my 40 time from 4.62 to a 4.51 all in Two and a Half Months and that's without a condition coach and personal trainer.. so dont give me that.. Put these Guys BACK where they should be in the 3-point stance and let them have at it.. Peek as a HIGH motor and that's something that people dream for in a DE and here is our mindless Coaching Staff taking him out of his natural position and standing him up.. Shame on You.. freaking Clowns..

So Babin/Peek at DE and then we draft a good DE to either take one of the starting spots or at least give them a breather.. Kamerion Wimbley from Florida St or Mark Anderson from Bama are both good size DE and could be potenital starters at the next level..

Now next we have the whole Gary Walker situation.. Dont get me wrong I like Walker when he's in that he's busting his butt on that D-Line but with the money that we are gonna have to sign him back for and then for the simple fact that we have Travis Johnson and Robaire Smith who both have Ridicoulously HIGH motors.. why sign back Walker for all this money just to have him as a back up?? So we have 3 Great DT's.. All have Big Contract Money to deal with.. but 1 of them is aging and his contract ends at the end of the year. Even a retarded monkey can make that decision.

If you are really itching for a Big Strong Back up that bad.. dont pay BIG Money to a veteran to back up.. go draft.. Kwakou Robinson (UVA) as a matter of fact he might not even get drafted.. so why not pick him up undrafted or Gerald Anderson (UGA).. that's a lot less money we have to pay for a back up so that means it's more money that we can spend on FA or resigning whoever that needs to be resigned in the future..

so now that that's been put to rest.. we Have..

Wimbley/Babin - Smith - Johnson - Peek/Wimbley

--------------------------------

Now with the Linebacker situation..

I hear some people are talking bad about Greenwood.. okay now while I personally think it was a dumb move to give him such a big contract... his speed and athletism is still something to respect.. But once again you need to put him BACK at his natural position.. (OLB) put Wong in the middle and then we can draft a good OLB or sign one from Free Agency.. I hear Cato June and Will Witherspoon, Akin Ayodele will be in FA.. spend that money that you have from not signing Walker and go after those guys if not then.. there are OLBs out the ying yang that we could pick up in the draft.. Chad Greenway, DeMarcus Ryans, Thomas Howard, Bobby Carpenter, AJ Nicholson and Roger McIntosh.. come on if you cant find a gem with all those guys in the draft then you dont deserve to be in this business..

So let's just say that we pick up Thomas Howard..

Howard - Wong - Greenwood

or if we pick up Witherspoon from FA

Witherspoon - Wong - Greenwood

now for all you "Wong Is An Oustide Linebacker people" Andra Davis, Edgerton Hartwell, and I Believe Trotter might be a FA also not exactly sure on him tho.. and then in the draft Shlegel, Roach and Harris are all solid ILB that will not BLOW a game for you and they have the potential to end up to be good players.. so if you really on content with put Wong on the Outside then there you go.. you've got plenty of options..

Let's jut say..

Wong - Davis - Greenwood

Now on to the secondary..
-----------------------------------------

I will be the first to honestly admit that when we traded the 2 picks for Bucahannon I was excited I will not lie about that.. but it turns out that he is not working well with our schemes.. what a lot of people dont realize is that when Buchannon was at Miami they ran a majority of zone defense now if you are gonna trade all those pick for a natural zone corner then how about you play some zone defense.. make sense?? yeah i thought so.. well anyway.. lets just consider Buchannon a bust and there is nothing that we can do about that so we just gotta find somebody that can at least push him or take his spot..

DeMario Minter, Jason Allen, Cedric Griffin and Antwan Phillips are all solid CDs and all could probably start for our DB core right away.. and I know at least one of those guys will be available in the 3rd round or something so we shouldnt really have trouble getting one..

so now lets say we pick up DeMario Minter..

Robinson - Minter/Buchannon

now with the Saftey situation last off-season I said over and over and over.. We SHOULD NOT have signed Marcus Coleman and Seth Payne to those contract extension.. DONT DO IT so on and so forth but it was a number of people on this board that blazed me talking all this "Coleman is a good saftey"... "He's a Solid Safety" crap and I just shook my head and said you'll see.. and look what happened.. Coleman cant tackle is speed wont really allow him to cover people.. so we gave him all that money for nothing at all..

So are Safety situation is really screwed up.. on the other hand we have CC Brown and Glenn Earl who can both hit like mack trucks but neither really a cover man.. so guess what we gotta go get a cover guy.. why not take a shot at Greg Threat or Marcus Hudson but good covering safety but still are solid tacklers.. either one you pick it's a upgrade from Coleman

so here we go..

Threat - Brown/Earl

so here is my project NEW LOOK Defense.. if the Texan's Organization plays it's cards right..

Robinson - Threat - Brown - Minter
Howard - Wong - Greenwood
Peek - Smith - Johnson - Wimbley

That's my 2cents.. thank you very much for your time..

Walker is twice the player either one of those guys are...at least right now. Smith disappears for long stretches and really isn’t all that impressive and TJ hasn't done much to distinguish himself as a rookie either. Also, Walker doesn't need to be resigned....he is here for a few years to come since we resigned him last year.

Are You Serious??? I'm have to throw a flag on that one.. :penalty:

Robaire Smith
41 Tot.Tkls 26.0 Solo Tkls 0 Sacks 1 Fum Rec
Travis Johnson
21 Tot. Tkls 19.0 Solo Tkls 1 Sacks 0 Fum Rec
Gary Walker
20 Tot. Tkls 13.0 Solo Tkls 1 Sacks 0 Fum Rec

In actuality they are both doing better than Walker and keep in mind like you said.. "Smith disappears For Stretches" HAHA.. yet he still delivers stats better than Walker.. and Johnson is doing better.. and he didnt really play that much at all the first 4 games of the season..

You say Walker is 2 times the man of both of them.. well Smith has 2 times the stats yet he's half the man.. doesnt make any sense to me.. but hey whatever you say bro.. HA HA!!..

Walker actually penetrates the LOS and has to have a constant double team. Smith doesn't need to be doubled and most of his tackles are past the LOS, but you would have to actually watch the games closely to figure this out. Stats are for baseball.

I like the switch to a 4-3. I also think our undersized OLBs can do the job as DEs. Look at Freeny with the Colts and Jason Taylor with the Dolphins. Besides weren't they DEs in college? Might be a more natural position for them.

isnt it only 1.5 sacks in 3 years for Gary Walker? He is way past his prime and getting older every second.

Stats are for baseball yea that may be true but what do you think helps get D-Line to the Pro-Bowl??? * Stats *

people are not gonna say "Well you know.. Will Smith is really helping his team, lets vote him to the Pro Bowl".. they are gonna say.. "You Freeney has like 10 Sacks already!!!, Lets vote him to the Pro Bowl"..

Now I played football and i know it's not all about stats.. cause there is no stat for holding outside containment or pentrating the LOS.. but on the other hand..

Sacks = Loss of Yards which = Punts (majority of time)
Fum Recs = Turnovers

And okay lets say his tackles were made beyond the LOS, okay would you really wanna see a great RB get pass our DLine and into that depleted LB Corp.. I didnt think so either.. so we should be thankfully that he is getting those tackles..

and as far as getting double teams.. yeah right i've seen numerous occasions where Johnson and Smith got doubled team.. and as far as Walker getting doble teamed.. I'm watching the Texans vs Rams game right now.. Walker was one on one and he's standing there with his thumb in his butt not even rushing fitzpatrick..

Not really. When Walker went to the Pro Bowl he only had 6 sacks. He went to the pro bowl because he was disruptive and needs a double team to contain him. He changes how you scheme the line....Smith and TJ don't on every snap...although they get their fair share of DT's since we run 3 DL vs 5 OL.

I know which pro-browl you're talking about.. like I said i'm not coming out here to knock Walker.. but 1.5 sacks in 3yrs come on now.. you gotta know when you call it done..

and honestly though.. if it wasnt Walker getting extra attention it would be somebody else.. like you said with 3DL vs 5OL somebody's gonna get doubled..

We do have a linebacker problem. Sure, Polk got a bunch of sacks today, but that doesn't excuse the fact that we gave up over 200 yards to Larry Johnson last week. Despite today's game, we have a SERIOUS problem at linebacker now that our brilliant managing staff let Foreman and Sharper go, and I actually think this is a bigger problem than our Oline.

Oh, and our secondary isn't better either.

Ever notice half of our guys on both sides of the ball are "playing out of position"

Thanks for letting two LEGIT ILBs go Casserly, real smart to let Sharper and Foreman go and give money to Wong who sucked in Minnesota and has done nothing to deserve a big contract here. Nothing like taking a 4-3 OLB and giving him a ton of money to play inside on a 3-4 Defense. Nice Casserly
