New Draft Ideas

OK, I have come up with some new draft ideas. This is my 1st post, so please don't be too harsh. AD would be a great pick, and for a while, well, actually a long while, I wanted him on the Texans. But I've been thinking about it and I have a suggestion.

Trade #8 Overall, 3rd Rd. Pick, & 2008 3rd Rd. Pick to Cleveland / Tampa Bay for #3 Overall. With that trade, we draft:

1. Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin
2. Brandon Merriweather, S, Miami OR Michael Griffin, S, Texas (whichever one is available)
4. Brandon Jackson, RB, Nebraska

Only catch is we might have to rely on Ron Dayne again, but he was solid for several games, and could do well again this year with Thomas / Spencer on the edges. Not to mention Plummer gets better protection... It's about time we get a nice tackle. IMO, are only weakness is the RB. What do ya'll think?

Clash, my only concern with this is that the Texans have an awful lot of holes to be thinking about trading up. If we are committed to the idea of OT in round #1, then I think Levi Brown makes a lot of sense. The guys that earn a paycheck to manage this stuff need to be thinking about what it will take to get an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder, instead of moving up in round 1. JMHO.

I'm a relatively new poster, too. I think mostly folks are cool about offering constructive feedback and ideas and such.

Gotta run off to the super bowl party...

I thought about reaching for Brown too, however IMO there is a noticeable drop off between Thomas and Brown. I would be content drafting Brown if we could trade down, but NFL teams can't always just trade down.

Not a fan of the idea because of the cost in draft picks.

I think we can get a talent with those three picks that would be better for the team in the long run than Thomas would.

There is no one in this draft I would want to shift up for. I am happy for the team to stay put and pick the best guy on their board.

The only way I would want TExans to trade up is if Texans somehow get Great FA pickups,,,,i.e. Clements, Lewis or Grant, DT,( Redding) and LB.

I don't see Texans trading up for any one. Previous administration have already wasted enough of our draft picks. If we need more then anything right now is more draft picks.

I don't want the texans to trade up in this draft at all. If anything trade down. I'd rather have levi brown and our 3 rounder than joe thomas and no 3rd.

We have to many needs for us to trade up. I'd like for us to have as many draft picks as possible.

I agree. The reason the Texans have struggled so much the past few years is due in no small part to the former FO lack of building this team through the draft. We have wasted so many first day picks it's not even funny. Your picks in rounds 1-3 should be starters or at least major contributors. We currently have hardly any picks from these critical rounds still on the team. Let's recap:
  • Picked Hollings in the 2nd, after he had only 4 games experience at RB in college and was coming off a major injury
  • Gave 5 picks, to a division rival to move back up into the 1st and select Babin, who more than likely would have been available when we picked in the 2nd
  • Gave 2nd and 3rd round picks to OAK for Buchanon, a horrible bust, when no one else would have given nearly that much, and when Edge and Shuan Alexander were both on the trading block for either a 2nd or 3rd

Desperation and reaching are what have led to some of this team's biggest personnel mistakes. Last year by being patient and letting the draft come to us, we had the best draft class in franchise history. I hope the Texans do not trade up in this draft, and if anything, I hope they trade down because we need all the help we can get. Besides, next years draft class will be rather deep at the OT spot.

I'm interested to see who's left on the board at the 8 spot. That will determine if we trade DOWN or not. Can't see us moving up. Pretty deep draft, talent wise.

Welcome to the board. Musing such as yours are fun and imo what this mb is about. If I understand your proposal you are willing to trade 3 starters 1st & 3rd round this year and a 3rd next year to move up five spots and get one starter? Not saying I would never do that but would not this year for sure. I want Thomas above all, but I think some players make others better. Peterson is such. Everyone on Oline will get better and offense in theory will be on field more allowing rest to our D. I just do not see our D going thru the injuries again plus less plays should moved our D up the ratings chart. A solid CB to add to DR will also make others better. Unlike others, I do not see need for a dlineman in draft. I see Peterson as avail @ 8 but not Thomas. I would go with Kolb in second as I now think he might be gone before 3rd. If Kolb gone in 2nd (possible) I'd go LT. Hopefully a CB will arrive via F/A.
