National Title Game: Auburn v Oregon

It seems that every time the Oregon coaches change the play from the sideline the play fails.

and now wasting a timeout. bummer

2 pt conversion!! Wow!

Should have kicked the field goal last time they had it at the 1. Hope it doesn't come back to haunt them!

I have no dog in thid hunt, that said this was a pretty good football game........ Congrats War Eagles!

Get the **** out of what is left outta our "sorta" Big XXII?????????

Eff you Nebraska....... WOW!! I Feel you are Texas' new Arkansas....... The Big XII has been raped by you the same way Arkansas raped the best conference ever, the South West Conference!!!

Okay, I'm a bit bitter................ and I'm okay with that.

Praise be to G*d!!!

Sorry for spiling the party but doesn't Gene Chizik sound a bit disingenuous? Also, I believe the Patriots are the best football team in America not Auburn.

I guess Auburn fans can't complain about not winning the MNC in 2005 because of another team's tainted players who shouldn't have been allowed to play any more.

Saban is now talking about the game and he looks pissed that Auburn won the game. He pretty much called Oregon soft!!!

Casey Matthews looked good..Can't argue if its in the blood..Wouldn't mind him over with the Texans, can probably get him in the middle rounds..

yes it was a great game if Oregon could have somehow gotten them to overtime they would have won it, Newton was completely gassed while Thomas was coming on like the green hornet. The pick by Cliff Harris end of 1st half was killer, if they overturn the call (he had posssion) then Auburn doesn't get the ball back & score on the next play.

I would say Fairly is a top 3 pick, along with Peterson & Bowers, you choose the order, in any case of no concern to me cause the Texans will not get him. Cliff Harris is hands down the best shutdown cb I've seen this season, he's gonna be a heck of a NFL cb for somebody.

I enjoyed this game more than the last great BCS game, USC/Texas. Nice to see some new blood playing for all the marbles. Fairley is a frigging beast. Kid reminds me so much of Haynesworth - needs a good coach to stay on top of him to keep him in shape and motivated. If that happens the kid is a monster stud.

Fairley played well but the Oregon line did next to nothing to try to block him imo. I saw at least a couple of times where they barely touched him & he had a free run at the qb/rb. In addition to that, I just don't like the kid for some reason. He seems like a real turd to me. Potential trouble maker once he gets some change in his pocket..maybe im wrong though.

And Oregon lost by three...

I thought about that too, but if they kick the fg and then subsequently score the td, they would've gone for one and then Auburn woulda been down by two and still coulda kicked the fg to win the game.

Them matthews boys have bred well. I'm hoping the Texans can take the Aggie lineman version in a few years as well.

No joke - I've never seen so many defensive lineman / linebackers come through UNTOUCHED in my life.

They almost definitely still would have gone for two anyway. Prior to the PAT, they would have been up by one point late in the game. Being up by two is no better than being up by one, so there would have been zero risk in going for two, and if you made it, a FG only ties the game.

Even at that, who knows what other differences would have been created by a fg rather than a turnover on downs - you know, the whole "if a butterfly flaps it's wings in China" thing.

ya, your prob right.

This. Kid is talented, no doubt, but last night he was unblocked on most of his plays behind the line of scrimmage. Dont get me wrong, he is a top 10 talent, but he is not the next Suh, Sapp, etc. Add in his attitude, and meh, I would not be terribly upset if the Texans passed on him if he were available. Depending on who they pick, of course.

I saw both teams go for two and they did so more than once. Why was this?

Oregon had a surprise two point conversion early in the game to take an 11-7 lead. I don't know if anyone saw it coming, which is probably why it was successful. They went for another two point conversion late in the game because they were down two at the time. It was successful and it tied the game 19-19 with 2:33 left in the game. Auburn didn't try a two point conversion.

I thought one team went for the conversion and did not convert but I was half asleep though.

Nope. The scores were: Auburn 7-3, Oregon 11-7 (2 point conversion successful), Auburn 9-11 (safety), Auburn 16-11, Auburn 19-11, Oregon 19-19 (2 point conversion successful), Auburn 22-19.

There were a lot of failed 4th & goals though...

That's probably it then.

For once, I agree with you. He wasn't being blocked. That's like watching a RB who never has to create his own rushing lanes (always has holes the size of a Ford truck to run through). Very deceiving when it's time to watch tape and judge it.

I'd rather have Blanc than Fairley. Put him right over the center and let him eat.

The reason Fairley was unblocked is because Oregon wasn't running true zone read for most of the game.

In a zone read, the QB reads the movement of the backside DE. If the DE comes into the backfield, he gives to the RB. If the DE crashes down the line, he keeps it.

Oregon was running a midline option, which has all the same principles, except that you read the DT instead of the DE.

I guess they figured that they couldn't block Fairley so they would just let him go and block the people around him. As far as gameplanning goes it was the right idea. I would have done the same thing. The problem is that Thomas wasn't executing the play correctly.

He wasn't riding the give long enough. Meaning, he made his read too quickly and would either give or take before Fairley had even made his move. You're supposed to keep the ball in the RB's belly until the DT makes his move. He can't get both of you if you execute it correctly.

dead-on analysis :goodpost:

overall I was so proud of Darron Thomas, as you pointed out, especially in the first half he hurried his reads which cost the Ducks, by the fourth quarter he settled in & played with a lot of poise for a 1st year starter.

True, but he looked like a beast. He already had some hype coming into the game and then in the game looked beastly.

Without a true consensus #1, I think Fairley has put his name into the #1 spot consideration.

I honestly see him as the DL version of Vernon Gholston. I don't really see anything overly spectacular about his game & i've watched him a few times this year.

obviously you haven't watched much SEC football all year long he has been doing this. So what he's got a bit of a nasty streak in him, I'll take a 15 yard penalty per game if the guy plays like a beast.

You aren't out there to make friends, he's not dirty he's just intimidating people.

I watched a fair amount, as I scout the draft pretty heavily. That is why I know that he does stupid **** every game.

He is a talent, I am not disputing that. It is likely, almost a certainty, that he will go before the Texans pick. however, if he does drop, there are certainly players that I would take before Fairly.

I dispute the "he's not dirty he's just intimidating people" part. Shoving a guy's head into the ground after a tackle is a dirty play. And like one of the announcers (Kirk, I think) said, he does stuff in every game. I am all for getting tough people who dont take crap. I just dont want the guy to get penalties every game, and who will likely get suspended.

I am not a fan of dirty players either. But sometimes they pay off if you can get them late in the draft or as a FA.

Yep, sometimes they do. But you said it- late in the draft. I dont want to waste a top end pick on a guy who will most likely be suspended numerous times, and called for unsportsmanlike conduct at least once a game (average).

Again, Fairley is a legit talent... but I dont want him.

Nick Fairley: The next Albert Haynsworth? For better and/or worse.

There is also a huge difference between a guy like Blount (who was baited into making that stupid decision) and a guy like Fairley (who intentionally tries to injure people for no other reason than that he can).

And I'm not trying to defend Blount here. I was against drafting him when he came out too. But what Fairley does is worse than what Blount did.

He is a legit talent. I'll admit that. But I wouldn't want a guy like that on my team. The benefit may not end up equaling the cost.
