Nate's "Posted on both boards" Mock Draft

I've done mock drafts in the past and I will try not to repeat my previous mocks. (for the most part) Don't want to have multiple mock drafts with a lot of similar players, isn't very fun.

1. Khalil Mack OLB Buffalo

khalil-mack-mid.jpg

At this pick I contemplated Bridgewater, Mack, and Manziel but decided to go BPA and that is Mack. Fits the exact type of LB that RC wants. This guy can rush the passer with a variety of different moves and can drop back in coverage really well. Literally, the BPA in this draft. (Alternate Selection: Teddy Bridgewater QB Louisville or Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M

2. Jason Verrett CB TCU

With teams clamoring (and overpaying in FA) to have multiple impact WR's on their team, we need to get multiple impact defenders. McCain is gone, Harris isn't worth his 2nd round selection, and we don't know what we've got with Bouye yet. (Even if it looks promising) Verrett is your prototypical nickel CB and he is smart, athletic, and hard-working. Plays with a quiet swagger. (Alternate Selection: Ra'Shede Hageman

3. Zach Mettenberger QB LSU

Zach%20Mettenberger%202.jpg

He's coming off a torn ACL but he should be available at the top of the 3rd round. Had improved tremendously under Cam Cameron. (Funny because Ravens couldn't wait to get rid of Cameron) He's the prototypical QB for BOB. He's got a strong arm, great touch with the ball, but needs polishing all-around. Hard to rate because of his all-star squad at WR. We'll need a veteran to pair with Mettenberger but depending on his progress he could either start Day 1 or start mid-way through the season. Has great upside.

4. Daniel McCullers NT Tennessee

c01_second_13-x-large.jpg

This guy is a man among boys. He's 6'7 (About 6'8) 350 pounds. This is the NT that we've wanted. Being that tall his obvious problem is playing too high. He will most likely demand double teams in most situations. Against Alabama he was usually double-teamed but still managed to flush McCarron out of the pocket. High effort guy who doesn't quit for his size. Obviously only a 2 down player. Needs to work on conditioning and watching his weight because it can fluctuate. He's a high effort guy but when he's winded, he's winded. When he's in 1 on 1 situations he's going to MAUL his guy, immediately. Would work well next to Watt.

5. Jerick McKinnon RB Georgia Southern

C6AA_rgbsouthern34.jpg

McKinnon has done it all while at Georgia Southern, thrown the ball, run the ball, caught the ball, etc. He's a natural athlete with great speed and strength. While only 5'9, he's 210 pounds. He tested out freakishly at the NFL Combine and has the tape to back it up. At Georgia Southern he ran the option so his numbers might be slightly skewed but he can play. He was one of the reasons that Georgia Southern upset Florida in 2013. Spent a lot of time changing positions while in school. (CB as a Freshman, QB as a Junior, and RB as a Senior.) Would need some time to focus on 1 position but has the talent and the effort to contribute. (Alternate Selection: Dri Archer RB Kent State
(Probably won't be available)

6. Seandrel Henderson OT Miami (No picture, had to limit it to 6)

Massive, strong-bodied, long-armed specimen with the physical gifts to be a dominant NFL right tackle in a power or slide-protection blocking scheme. However, he failed to live up to expectations in Coral Cables thanks to a tumultuous career marred by tragedy, suspensions, injuries and benchings. High-risk, high-reward, high-maintenance wild card who must convince decision-makers he’s worth gambling on. Interview process will go a long way in determining his trustworthiness.

7. Denicos Allen OLB Michigan State

Hard worker, a "chip on shoulder" type of guy. Plays with fire and is ALL about football. I just had to put him on here because he's going to be a ST's stud AT LEAST, when he gets to the NFL. Obviously undersized at 5'11, 225, but plays with a mean streak and gets after you. Was reading up about how RC will change defensive schemes to get more LB's on the field, he would work well in those situations or could attempt to move back to safety.

I really liked doing this one.

Hope you guys all enjoy!

I would actually be good with this draft. The Mack pick at #1 wouldn't get me too excited, but wouldn't be disappointed either. Henderson is one of the strangest prospects to me in this draft. I want to believe he'll be ok in this league, but his downward spiral and lack of development worries me.

Nice work.

First off. There can be only one Texans Board! TEXANS TALK!

What do you say to people who criticize Mack's level of competition?

I really like the McCullers pick. And another corner is definitely needed. I think that Mettenberger is the size that BOB wants, but I think he is a long ways off of being ready for the NFL. 59% and 65% passing his last 2 seasons. And did you have to give us another #8 at QB!

Looking back on Sam Montgomery the 6th or 7th round is where we should have drafted him..not the end of the 3rd.

Lack of competition is obviously a concern but when you watch him vs. Ohio State against Jack Mewhort he dominates him. (Makes him look silly)

Let the #8 live forever in Houston! :D

instead of focusing on #1 pick, Mack, who would be excellent fit @ OLB, but is not a QB, would like to commend you on your 2nd rd. pick Jason Verrett. reminds me of Dunta Robinson who Texans took over Ben Roethlisberger & Vince Wilfork. Pre-acl there was a pretty good discussion around here that Dunta was a top 5 CB. Jason could step in & be a huge upgrade over KJ (who I would move to S) as boundary corner or in nickle packages. Excellent game film, ball instincts, had himself a heck of combine which backs up his film & think he even lifted 21 times @ his pro day? just a real solid overall cb prospect & like OT's worth weight in gold.

don't care for Zach, but I get it. McCullers is a 4th rd. steal, think he is long gone, just fits a 3-4 nose to a T. much as McKinnon reminds me of Hollings, taking risk in the 5th makes it much easier than using a 2nd. Henderson is a fine developmental OT, has NFL size.

I love his draft. Whether it could happen is another argument but it's close enough that it's possible.

I've long been singing Mack's praises around here. I was championing him as an option at #1 long before it was popular. I'm glad it's starting to catch some steam. He's an animal.

I love Verrett. Unfortunately, I think he is off the board in the 1st round. But if he were to fall due to size, which is possible, then I would snatch him up just as you have here.

I like Mettenberger but he needs a ton of work. If you're not going with Bridgewater/Bortles in the 1st or Garoppolo in the 2nd then this is probably your best option.

I'm not a fan of McCullers. This would be the right spot to take him and we do need a NT, but there are numerous other guys I would prefer.

I'm probably the highest on this board on McKinnon. Very raw project right now, but I could see him off the board as early as the 3rd round. He's just an undeveloped athlete. Upside is huge.

I don't like Henderson. If he's there in the 6th then he's worth a shot but I don't see it ever coming together for him.

Allen is a very good take in the 7th. Has the mentality to be useful on special teams and the athleticism to be useful on defense in a small role.

I just cant see them taking Mack #1. Trade down? Ok. But if they are "stuck" at #1 I dont see anyway around taking Clowney or a QB.

Crennel's defense starts with the play of the front seven. If Tuitt falls to 2-33, I'd take him over Verrett. Because of his foot surgery, he may be available.

But a front three of J.J, McCullers and Tuitt would free up the LB's as the defense is designed to do. But more significantly, Tuitt would free up Mercilus, who under performed in Wade's scheme.

Getting the pass rush performance from our four linebackers, as Crennel's defense is designed to do, would automatically improve our defensive backfield.

If Mack and Clowney are going to play the same position and Mack is better suited for it wouldn't you take him?

I'm not saying definitively that he is more suited for it. But I think he is. If the coaching staff agrees then why not?

I don't like putting yourself in a hole by saying you can only take certain people with a certain pick. You take whoever will provide the biggest positive impact to the team, whoever that may be.

I am not sold that they will play the same position. I think Mack would play the Strongside and Clowney would play the Weak.

I am not saying you cant take certain people with a certain pick. Only that I think Clowney is the most dynamic player in the draft, and Bridgewater is the best QB in the draft. Maybe its just that I am not sold on Mack, or Barr, or Watkins. Hence the comment that they must take a QB or Clowney.

Fair enough. If that's the reasoning then I can get behind that statement.

True that, which is why it should be Manziel despite whoever, wherever or however he's graded, much to my own dismay, butts in the seats & more wins than losses. will be interesting to see how O'Brian molds JM, hopefully with a power running game in similar system to Seattle & Russell Wilson. That's my biggest impact prospect but not nessecarily highest ranked for this organization moving forward :swatter:
