My initial offseason plan

cadahnic

Rookie
This is way too early to be throwing out free agency and draft plans, but I thought I'd go ahead and throw my current :twocents: out there:

Free Agency:
Sign a starting CB. Nate Clements would be my top preference but will likely want a lot of money and will likely want to go to a winning team after being in Buffalo all his career, so he could be a difficult sell. Maybe Eric Moulds could help bring him in. If we can't get him, go hard for Asante Samuel. He is young and talented and would be a nice complement to Dunta Robinson.

Sign a good LB or DL. Lance Briggs would be nice but I'm sure he will command a big pay day as well, and it might be hard to bring him to Houston from Chicago. Adalius Thomas might be another good option, he is a good SLB and versatile, he could also play some DE during nickel formations if we want, or play OLB in a 3-4 if we ever start using that package again.

Draft (hopefully these people will fall to these rounds, at this point I don't really know what to expect on some of them):

Round 1
Adrian Peterson - would give us a stud RB that could put up huge numbers in our system and greatly help get our offense back on track. If he's not there I'd consider Leon Hall if we don't sign a CB or else LaRon Landry.

Round 2
Michael Griffin - Rangy FS/SS that is very athletic and pretty good in coverage, plus he can tackle well and likes to dish out big hits. He would easily be an upgrade over CC Brown. I have studied him and Reggie Nelson a lot and like him better, haven't seen enough of LaRon Landry yet but from what I've seen he compares pretty decently to Landry as well.

Round 3
Adam Carriker - I don't know if he falls this far, but if he does he would be a nice pick here. It would allow us to move Weaver inside where he is probably a better fit, and gives us a more athletic yet pass rusher off the edge than what Weaver is and he's much stronger and better holding his end up against the run than Babin or Peek.

Round 4
Ben Grubbs - He may not fall this far either and I'd consider taking him in the 3rd, but he would be a nice addition to the OL. He reminds me a lot of Chester Pitts but I think he is probably a little more talented, very strong, can move well, and is a good at both run blocking and pass blocking.

Rounds 5-7
Upgrade depth along our OL, LB, DB, DL.

the contracts clements and briggs are going to get will be astronomical. no way you'll be able to get both.

and all 4 of those guys are 1st rounders, really. carriker is a top 25 pick, grubbs is right on the brink of the 1st. pretty unrealistic overall.

Clements should be #1 as well as Steinbach or Dockery at the Guard Position for the off season.

Im leaning more to Nelson than Landry for FS

Steinbach is definitely another option, although he may cost a lot and I like Grubbs, there are probably a few other OLinemen out there in the draft that would be equally as nice but I haven't seen a whole lot of them yet, but I've seen a decent amount of Grubbs.

I'm not a real big fan of Nelson, I'd prefer Griffin to Nelson and I haven't seen enough of Landry to comment thoroughly on him yet.

Yeah, some of these guys likely will end up going higher than what I have them, hence I said this is a prelimenary wish list, I try not to get caught up in mock drafts and everything this early on, I prefer to wait for the all star games and combine, but I thought I'd throw out this list because I've studied these guys a decent amount so far. I'm not sure Carriker goes 1st round, he'll have to put up a pretty solid workout, I've heard that he's falling on a lot of lists. I don't see Grubbs going in the 1st round either, I don't see him falling to the 4th either. I'd definitely take him in the 3rd if he's available.

Cadahnic,

I like where you're going with this, but like everyone else, I've got a little different idea.

I agree with kastofsna's comment about the cost of 2 high profile free agents. Since I believe that CB is the harder position to fill with an NFL ready player, I'd have to go hard after a CB in free agency. And more specifically, I'd go hard after Asante Samuel. I'd go after him with the intent of signing him on the first day of free agency. In all likely hood, I'll pay more than I should, but I'll have the complimentary CB to Dunta that we need. That'll give us one of the most dynamic CB duo's in the league.

I'll take a look at signing some offensive line depth as well in free agency.

In the draft, I've got 2 trains of thought as to how we should approach it. While I hate the losing that we've done this year, it's looking like it couldn't have turned out any better for us, as far as the future goes.

I believe that Adrian Peterson & Marshawn Lynch are the answers to our running game. However, there are some solid RB's later in the draft & I'm torn with my 2nd train of thought. Should we finish building the defense now, or take the RB & try to finish the defense as we go? Here are my 2 different draft scenarios.

Train of Thought #1

Round 1

Adrian Peterson or Marshawn Lynch (RB)- Either one would give us the legitimate RB that we need & would take a lot of pressure off of Carr & the passing game.

Round 2

Rufus Alexander (OLB)- He gives us another DeMeco Ryans at the OLB position. With the return of Wali Rainer & Wong returning to his pre-injury form (hopefully), we should have a solid linebacker crew.

Round 3

Sabby Piscatelli (FS/SS)- If he lasts until the 3rd round, I believe that he'd be the steal of the draft. He's listed as a SS, but I believe that he can play the FS position. He's 6'3" 224lbs. & runs a 4.55 40. NFL Draft Coverage has him listed unofficially as running the 40 in the 4.3 range. Here's their write up on his strengths:

Sabby has tremendous size at 6-3, and even better speed. He's lightning fast. One of the best athletes at the safety position in the entire draft. He is a fiery leader and plays with a great passion for the game. He not a huge hitter, but can definitely lay the wood when the oppurtunity presents itself. Extremely polished and experienced having started 3 straight years without injury. His 15 career INT's are top 5 all time for Oregon St. He really is just the complete player.

Round 4

Samson Satele/Dan Mozes/Kyle Young (C)- Which ever one is left. We've got to strengthen the OL.

Rounds 5-7

BPA- QB, OL, DL, WR

Train of Thought #2

Round 1

Gaines Adams (DE)- Let's finish the defense. This kid is being compared to Jevon Kearse by some. Move Weaver to tackle & we have one of the best front 4's in the NFL.

Round 4

Dwayne Wright or DeShawn Wynn (RB)- Lundy's not the answer & Dayne is getting old.

Rounds 5-7

BPA- QB, OL, DL, WR

In the 1st scenario, we add a stud RB & a young center/guard on offense, but only finish the CB, LB, & Safety positions on defense. Thus, leaving the DL as needing one more piece. We might find a sleeper in the late rounds, but we might not, as well.

In the 2nd scenario, we complete the DL, CB, LB, & Safety positions on defense. Thus, completing our defensive rebuilding. We added a solid RB in the 4th round & will add depth to the OL in the later rounds.

I guess it just depends on whether or not, you want to complete the defense, or get a stud RB now.

I meant to add him before but I forgot. For our 5th round pick if he's available I'd go with Ryan Moore, WR from Miami FL. He is listed at 6'3", 225 lbs. and is supposed to be able to run in the low-mid 4.4 range. I haven't checked him out very much yet but that kind of athlete deserves a good look if he falls. I'll get a closer look at him in the coming weeks to get a better idea on him.

moore is an absolutely terrible player. although it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of that has to do with coker. could be worth a look in the later rounds. but his attitude is really bad.

Clements should be #1 as well as Steinbach or Dockery at the Guard Position for the off season.

Im leaning more to Nelson than Landry for FS

Dockery can not function in this offense. Period. He is the exact opposite of the o-lineman Kubiack and Sherman are interested in. Period.
