My Early 2005 Houston Texans Mock

I want to see how much our opinions change from now to April. Ya'll join in.

Round 1: DE Marcus Spears, LSU
(Stud. Exactly what we need... PASH RUSH)

Round 2: ILB Odell Thurman, Georgia
(Tackling Machine, ALL over the field. Foreman sucks)

Round 3a: RB DeAngelo Williams, Memphis
(Simply too much talent to pass up on)

Round 3b: C Greg Eslinger, Minnesota
(I saw the Music City Bowl, and came away really impressed)

Round 4: TE Kevin Everett, Miami (Fl)
(I hope he's still around here, he has big time potential)

Round: 5: DT Anthony Bryant, Alabama
(STEAL. Super Good at clogging the middle)

Round 6: OG Sam Mayes, OSU
(Keeps everything in front of him, what we NEED)

Round 7: CB Markus Curry, Michigan
(Good Value)

Marcus stock dropped @ end of the season due to injury, he MAY still be availalbe in the 2nd.

Round 2: ILB Odell Thurman, Georgia
(Tackling Machine, ALL over the field. Foreman sucks)
I like this pick MLB or CB in the 2nd (or if spears is still avialable)

Round 3a: RB DeAngelo Williams, Memphis
(Simply too much talent to pass up on)
If Everett is still available this is where you select him

Round 3b: C Greg Eslinger, Minnesota
(I saw the Music City Bowl, and came away really impressed)
a quality player & future replacement for McKinney

Round 4: TE Kevin Everett, Miami (Fl)
(I hope he's still around here, he has big time potential)
any good RB's or CB's left 4th round?

Round: 5: DT Anthony Bryant, Alabama
(STEAL. Super Good at clogging the middle)
steal

Round 6: OG Sam Mayes, OSU
(Keeps everything in front of him, what we NEED)
steal

Round 7: CB Markus Curry, Michigan
(Good Value)
another steal, he might be that 4th round pick

keep researching your on the right track :howdy:

I didn't hear about the injury to Spears, what is it and how much would it really affect his status? He would be a steal in the 2nd, I wouldn't even hesitate.

And if you are wondering why I'm actually up this early is because me and a friend watched TV all night long and I'm hoping that by staying up all night I'll go to sleep at a decent time and get on a normal sleep schedule in time for when I head back to San Marcos.

Round 1 Marcus Spears, Rodrique White,Travis Johnson or Mathias Kiwanaku who ever we like best and can help line immediately (get us a push up front)

Round 2 Marcus McNeil OT Auburn or David Baas OG Michigan

Round 3 Eslinger C/ Everett TE or Mankins OT Fresno/ Wilkerson C LSU

round 4. Antonio Perkins Oklahoma good return guy + nickel groom to replace Glenn

rounds 5 Kirk Morrison MLB SD State

round 6 Chris Kemoeatu OG Utah

round 7 Matt Grootegood SS USC

Go after Edge Hartwell MLB (Edge and Sharp in the middle sweet) LT Walter Jones FA(probably to pricey, but would shore up our line)

rounds 5 Kirk Morrison MLB SD State

round 6 Chris Kemoeatu OG Utah

I doubt that morrison slips this far and Kemoeatu will probably be a 3rd or 4th round pick.

I'd be ok with this

Round 2: ILB Odell Thurman, Georgia
(Tackling Machine, ALL over the field. Foreman sucks)
Sounds good

Round 3a: RB DeAngelo Williams, Memphis
(Simply too much talent to pass up on)
Surly we could find a CB, OL, DL or deep threat WR here. I just don't think Williams is that much better than waht we got; and with out needs I think we'd be better served going in a different direction.

Round 3b: C Greg Eslinger, Minnesota
(I saw the Music City Bowl, and came away really impressed)
Best pick so far. Great palyer, big need and good value.

Round 4: TE Kevin Everett, Miami (Fl)
(I hope he's still around here, he has big time potential)
If he's there, grab him. If not see the DeAnglo Williams comments

Round: 5: DT Anthony Bryant, Alabama
(STEAL. Super Good at clogging the middle)
The rest looks good. Just think we might address teh NT postion earlier in teh draft.

Round 6: OG Sam Mayes, OSU
(Keeps everything in front of him, what we NEED)

Round 7: CB Markus Curry, Michigan
(Good Value)

Great start, better than nearly all the mocks I've seen so far. Espically since you don't have us taken any players that are not going to be in the draft (ie Rod Wright from UT, Mathias K from BC and others)

damn you bud, I had every topic covered until you interjected with your "don't agree with RB selection rant" just kidding back on top now :heh:

If Brandon's draft happens the way he says, I will be jumping up and down until September. But it won't happen like that.

Spears will be a 2nd round pick or a very late 1st rounder. I think Thurman could be an option for as in the 2nd, its just what we do in the 1st. No RB in the 3rd, TE is the way to go. I seriously think Esinger will be avaialbe in the 4th, and I would love to have Gootregood, he could be what what to us what Bowlarware was for Seatle.

I draft O-Line first and with the 3-4 we wont get a good pass rush (heck we dont play peek and we let Posey go).

First I would address FA with:

Jonas Jennings LT Someone to protect Carr's blindside
James Thrash WR a deep threat WR to compliment AJ
Fuamatu-Ma'afala Chris RB a big bruising RB to compliment DD
Anthony Becht TE -another good blocker with s good hands
Kendrick Clancy NT- a big run stuffing NT to free things up for the LB
Kendrell Bell LB-Replace an aging Foreman
Jarrod Cooper DB- kid from Pearland who is a special teams standout

Re-sign:
Bryan Pittman LS
Milford Brown OG
Troy Evans ILB
Demarcus Faggins CB
Moran Norris FB
Seth Payne NT
Jerry De Loach DE
Jason Simmon FS

1.Pac-Man Jones CB W. Virgina (if we want to compete with Indy we need CB)
2.Haloti Ngata DT Oregon
3.Donovan Raiola C Wisconsin
3.Fabian Washington CB Nebraska
4.Jonathan Babineaux DE Iowa
5.Matt Roth OLB Iowa
6.Mike Goolsby ILB Notre Dame
7.Will Matthews FB Texas

Why would u want Thrash? He's one of the worst WRs in the league, guess u dont get that. Bell,I like...matter of fact I like the rest of ur FAs except for Thrash and Fuamatu-Ma'fala. We want a WR thats a threat to a teams' defense (along with AJ),not a guy who makes Todd Pinkston look like Jerry Rice.

just my :twocents:

Why wouldn't you want Fuamatu-Ma'afala. That dude can play and is exactly the big bruiser this team needs. In the right situation, this guy can be a good running back. Think of all those 4th quarter leads we lost because we couldn't get a 3rd and 2 to maintain a drive. This dude can help us there.

We didn't "let Posey go" as much as he was an unrestricted FA, and took the Buffalo offer shortly after midnight of the opening of the FA period. Peek will play more if he is more mature next year. He gets into a fight on every play. He is his own worst enemy.

Couple quick notes on the for all of us draftniks out there...

I think the draft strategy will shape up much better after this weekend and we actually know who is going into the draft or opting to stay in school. For instance, Ngata looks to be far and away the best DT pick up for a 3-4 defense in this years possible draft crop...a guy like him deciding to come out or not effects several teams draft boards.

That being said this years draft looks a little thin at most positions that we are looking at. I think we will use FA more to address the OL (I don't think we will see more than 1 maybe 2 new faces in the starting 5 next season), I am specifically looking at making a run at Wahle from the Packers. I ranked our off season priority as follows:
1) OL
2) DL
2A) ILB
3) TE
4) WR

Making certain assumptions about underclassmen coming out and what the UFA market currently looks like I broke the 1st day of the draft down as follows:
1) Toss up for Heath Miller, TE...this is a reach but the TE market in FA is fairly thin and after Miller the drop off is pretty big OR we go for BPA...the possibilities I have are DJ, Crowder (ILB), or possibly Rod Wright. If Braylon Edwards fall this far (don't see that happening by the way) we should take a shot on him.

2) Ngata, NT...possiblity we may have to trade up to get him since every 3-4 team in the leage will be eyeing him.

3) Wilkerson, C...if he is available at this slot it would be a great value pick and he has the potential for being a clear starter by the end of pre-season.

3b) Grigsby, ILB...I suspect his stock will rise post combine, I think teams will weigh his incredible production over the "played in Div II" wrap. Depending on the how the #1 pick goes particularly if DJ falls to us will really control his fate.

Why would we draft or sign a LT? Wand was fine and will be starting his 2nd season... Wade can't play inside and makes $5 million per year... In order to improve our OL, we'll need to do so from the interior: C, RG, and/or maybe LG-Pitts would be great as a backup at both G and T positions.

I had similar thoughts along these lines...thats why I passed up some of the more trendy OT picks that might have been available (ie. Alex Barron) in favor of Heath Miller or a defensive playmaker. I think if we picked up a quality interior lineman (Wilkerson or Baas) to develop and possibly challenge for a starting job as well as take a good look at 1 standout veteran (like OG Wahle) that we would end up better off in the long run.

That being said I have said in a couple threads that we need to monitor the Kyle Turley situation in STL. Lots of unanswerd questions there but if he becomes available I think we should take a serious look at him as the veteran FA pickup. If he comes back from his injury ok he should have several good years left. I think that if a healthy Turley were available he would be a clear choice over Wand. I think Wand could eventually develop into a decent RT in the league...I am just not sold on him being the blindside bodyguard for Carr after watching him play for a year.

I would say the clear choice would be Wand. The last time Turley tried to play LT (his 5th year in the NFL I believe) he gave up more sacks than Wand did last year in his 1st year as a starter.

Is it me or does Carnell Williams remind you of Tomlinson?

Not a big guy, but elusive, and plays bigger than he is. I could see Williams having a similar carrer.

its just you i hope.

heath miller will not be a first round pick.

if alex barron falls to us, which i dont think he will...that would be a very easy decision for the texans front office. wand is only project to be the league average, maybe a little better. i like him though. i do not like pitts to much, if we could get barron at RT i would be great w/that. but most likely we will have to trade down.

1. (around pick 20-22) Marcus Spears
2. najata if he declares (spelling?)
2. heath miller
3. antionio perkins
3. jason brown

heath miller is the only one of those picks i would be overly concerned with if we got, im still of the belief that jouroppe will be back. i would sub. Shawne Merriman DE Maryland for heath miller if jouroppe is good to go.
