Murphy on/Starling off

anyone have an idea why? he seemed to be a pretty decent gunner and not too bad of a receiver either...

Most likely one of the other 31 teams tried to sign Murphy....that's what normally happens then the only choice is to activate him or allow him to sign with the other team.

This dosen't sound encouraging for Joppru's activation after PUP.

Exactly what I was thinking...big-time red flag for Joppru. You know, at least Charles Rogers played in a game or two before he flamed out. Sad.

I dont think it has anything to do with Joppru, because we cant activate him till week 6 anyways. The reason we activated Murphy was because both our TEs are banged up so the Texans need one in case Bruener and/or Miller is unable to play...

Interesting that we cut starling. I figured we were high on him during preseason and would want to hold onto him and see what he could do.. but he never even played a down I think.

Oh well.. I guess back to back losses to two dismal teams can make you rethink your stance on things.

Is this true??? eek:

So Joppru had been hurt for quite some time now so they had to let him go having to sign another TE to the practice squad and released K. Starling to make room. With Houston's luck....Starling is going to another team and be a star. Why let him go and not someone else!!! OMG!!!

Here is the link

P.S. I edited since I had my info wrong. The Ogre was right....

If you've seen the latest rash of TE injuries I think that It was a smart move to snatch up Murphy before another teams adds them to their roster.

Ok, somebody explain why Starling did not go on practice squad? I know he must pass waivers to do so. Is that possible? We seem to have a difficult time keeping TEs healthy. idonno:

Just to clarify the situation, BTF is right.

The move was not made because of bad news/thoughts on Joppru, or even Starling. What happened was that someone(team) tried to sign Murphy off of our practice squad. We then had to sign Murphy to our active squad to keep from losing him. It was Murphy's choice between the team who tried to sign him, and us. Guess he likes the situation here. (FYI-This info came from one of the local tv stations sports-can't remember which one).

I'm glad that Kendrick cleared waivers.

Pretty much a win all the way around to me. Murphy may wind up being more valulable than another WR given the Joppru issue. Seemed to play well in preseason, but that was just preseason, so time will tell.

I could be wrong but I do not think that it is Murphy's choice. The team gets the opportunity to move him to our roster or lose him to the team offering him a roster spot. I don't think Murphy has any say.

Sports Radio said that it was the cowboys trying to sign Matt Murphy, maybe he should be playing more for the Texans if Parcells see something in him.

The practice squad player is free to negotiate a contract with any other team so if he is claimed, it really does come down to the player and his agent's decision since the original team's "counter claim" doesn't automatically veto the original claim and can't stop the player from leaving. If he really wanted out of here, he could have gone. Most of the time it comes down like it did with Murphy, that the original team tells the claimed p.s. player (if they really like him) to "stay with us - because you're familiar with this system and we'll promote you to our 53 for at least 3 games - you'll, have more opportunity here and make the same amount of money, yadda yadda yadda" - and the player stays - because of the familiar surroundings and the fact that the money is the same. It's like a call in poker but the original team isn't guaranteed the winning hand because the player holds the river ace. Now if there was some sentimental connection between the claiming team and the player - or some other reason why the player didn't want to stay - he could still bolt. At least that's the way I understand it.

I have a feeling you will see a TE package put in this week where one of the TE's will make one or two fairly long catches down the middle of the field - splitting the two-deep safety zones (or at least there will be attempts to do this). They will also be looking for the TE a bit more this week to lessen the load on DD if Hollings can't go again.

Man I really liked Starling..why didn't they cut Sloan Thomas or someone else instead?

I don't believe Sloan Thomas was on the active roster. They had to clear a spot for Murphy, and Starling was the man to go. The good news is that he is on our practice squad, and he didn't land with another team.

I thought Sloan was on the practice squad already?

So another team can offer these guys a good deal on their roster and they can be gone. BUMMER!
I don't want to see Starling get away!

Like we all debated to death a few weeks ago, I didn't see Starling as a guy who would catch very many passes this season. His special-teams speed and work ethic were what impressed me.

It's nagging at me that the week after we get smoked for a 99-yard kickoff return for a TD, we cut one of our fastest guys in kick coverage. Granted, there's a lot more than just one guy's speed to blame for THAT momentum-killer, but these practice squad moves do take a toll.

Whenever someone around here says, "Look! Team X cut Player Y! We should sign him right now!" The response is always, "OK, who would you cut?" I hope this was a good decision in a special-teams context as well as an offensive context.

Im am still baffled as to why Shantee Orr is not on the active roster. When he was in the games, even for a few plays, he seemed to wreak havoc. I am just kinda suprised that after what he showed them, they put him on the PS.

Cleveland sounds like a team that could be in need of a new TE. Just a thought.
