Mortenses:Texans havent negotiated with Bush in 24 hours

Mike Kerns

LYSB Podcast
He just said so on Sports Center. The kicker? They have been negotiationg non-stop with Mario Williams. Looks like the Reggie dream is dead.

Or maybe they already have a gentleman's agreement in place and this is more of a ploy by the Texans. Either way I can't wait for this draft to be over. I'll be very disappointed if we draft M.Williams and the only way I'll get over it is we win and win quickly. Also, Williams better play like a pro-bowler from day one if he's the no.1 pick.

I always said, the Texans would find a way to screw this up...Way to go...:brickwall

You aren't kidding. I cannot believe that somehow this franchise has dropped the ball on this draft. We all suffered through a 2 - 14 season in order to pick up an unproven defensive end. The best we can hope for is a last-minute trade to at least make this somewhat tolerable...

I'm really leaning toward wanting Reggie over Mario, but not if the Texans are seriously concerned about a holdout.

In addition, league sources told ESPN.com that, in terms of guaranteed money, the latest offer made to Williams exceeds the best proposal made to Bush.

You're not lying. I better see Julius Freeking Peppers times 2 if they are going to pass on Bush for whatever reasoning. What's weird is the following:

"In addition, league sources told ESPN.com that, in terms of guaranteed money, the latest offer made to Williams exceeds the best proposal made to Bush".

WTF? Oh and anyone else remember the last dlineman going #1 overall? Courtney Brown, oh and he worked out so well for the Brownies. Okay, it's offical. This franchise is the biggest embarassment in sports. I just knew CC would somehow blow the unblowable. :brickwall

You hear that? Thats 31 other NFL franchises laughing at us.

So how exactly are we planning on preventing Carr from getting 68 sacks again this year??? I thought the Texans we sooo high on protecting Carr...I believe Bush would have taken alot of heat off Carr....What idiots...

I just want to know what the Texans plan on doing with Weaver if they draft Mario:confused:

I guess they leave him at the strongside and start Mario at the weaksideidonno:

And Bush is somehow more proven?

That actually makes sense to me. I think a defensive end is worth more money than a running back.

Oh, and anyone else remember the last running back going #1 overall? Ki-jana Carter, oh, and he worked out so well for the Bengals. Okay, it's official. Since Williams is apparently a guaranteed bust because the last DL #1 was a bust, Bush is also a guaranteed bust because the last RB #1 overall was a bust. Same. Exact. Logic.

I really don't think it is Casserly. I think it is McNair/Kubiak. They are just going to use Casserly as the fall guy. :twocents:

Wouldn't it be funny if we did take Super Mario?

Think of the wasted hours and keystrokes debating VY vs. RB - with no resolution.

I am with you. Would turn out to be one of the stupidest decisions we could have made with this pick...

What a bunch of MORONS!!! I hope this all a smokescreen.....if not, then no worries. We will probably have a #1 pick next year again. Oops, maybe we can take Adrian Peterson..ah, hell no...too much money. We will take the clear cut best 4th player in the draft....glad only half of my season tickets are paid for...on Monday, I cancel the other half.....sick and tired of this franchise making horrible personnel decisions. It all started last year with Travis Johnson...oh no, wait...I think we have been pretty lousy 3 out of 4 years. Thanks McNair...good luck selling season tickets to the 10% that want SUPER MARIO....the Texans will once again be in the House of Pain. The Saints are

Hmmmm....McClain said something on 610 about how agents put stuff out to reporters....see man....this is gonna be a WILD finish...

btw, i saw some Williams tape...dude is indeed nice.

I don't want to hear about how it is money reasons anymore. Not when they are offering MW more than they ever offered Bush. :challenge

No, but comparing their respective college careers, it is not even close. As a Hurricane, I watch a ton of ACC games. Mario is a strong player, but not strong enough to be a dominant, top pick at the NFL level. This franchise is becoming a joke.

I said it in another post... you set the market with what is acceptable to Mario as the #1, then go to Reggie and say... this is the deal you will sign, or you fall to #2 and get much less.

We are in an excellent position... the panic you have in this thread about losing Bush is what the Texans (in my opinion) want Reggie's team to feel.

Instead of us pressing the panic button, let Reggie do it.

Plus, Reggie's agent doesn't want to get fired right after the draft for screwing up the #1 selection in the final hours. The Agent will come to the rescue and speak sense of the situation and get a deal done in the 11th hour.

Oh no, I hit the panic button a few days ago. I really don't think this is a smokescreen. You only have leverage for a few more hours and you have not even bothered to negotiate with Bush? I don't really know what McNair is thinking, but I don't like it at all.

So you think they are making an offer to Mario first only to then present it to Bush and basically tell him to take it or leave it???? I mean if Bush passed up their last offer he wouldn't be making much more anywheres else....Right??

Yah I can think of at least 2 scenarios where this could be a smokescreen.

First Scenario: We made Bush a "final offer" and told him to accept it or we will go with Williams. So while we are waiting for his answer, we are pressuring him and his agent by really talking to Williams.

its basicly boiling down to whether or not Bush and his agent feel that passing on him with the #1 pick is "concievable".. as long as they feel "there is no way that they would take anyone BUT Bush"..then they have the leverage to demand a HUGE contract. By really chasing Williams, we are putting the doubt in thier mind that we may really be willing to NOT take bush with the #1 pick. And he isnt gonna get a deal anywhere CLOSE to what we were offering him if he slides out of the #1.

Second Scenario: We really do want Williams.. but we want to trade down and get him. So we are putting on a show of ignoring Bush so that people will call and offer trades to us for that #1 pick, so that they can get Bush.

I think the first scenario is more likely.

Right. It is well known that the deals around a draft choice are relative... ie the #2 gets less than #1 but more than #3.

So now they may have a 'done deal' with Williams officially floating in the rumor mills... http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

Now, they go to Bush and say... do you want this deal that we agreed to with Mario, or do you want to play in New Orleans for less money... the choice is all Reggie's and the ball is being placed in his court by the Texans 'finalizing' a deal with Mario.

I think it's smokescreen and mirrors at this point. I'll believe we're getting MW when they announce it on stage tomorrow. Until then, I think it's Bush.

That is the post of the off season! Classic.

Unfortunately for me, I invested in yet another pair of tickets (a total of 4) because I thought we would draft either VY or RB. My wife might fire me tomorrow!

Nowadays, you might be fired, but at least that will qualify you to be the new commissioner in the NFL. If you only hadn't screwed up the little league draft, you could still be GM of the family.

Everyone's a bust until they prove they aren't. Let us all hope he is more Peppers and less Brown.

Kas, nice to meet a fellow 'Cane. I really agree with your Lawson comment. That kid is a stud...Maybe the Texans are in negotiations with him as well?

No, not the same logic. Bad comparison. Carter was injured, and that's why he busted. That can happen to anyone. Besides, it was just a reference because it was in the article, and kind of reminded me of the last DE taken high. Williams was very incosistent. He might be all that and a bag of chips, or just a empty bag. There is MUCH less risk in taking Bush. His very worst downside is maybe Warrick Dunn...at the very worst. With Williams he COULD bust alltogether. Not saying or predicting he will, but it is much more likely he busts than Bush.

I would wait to see what the contract looked like Mario signs IF he gets drafted #1 overall....you never know he may have struck a deal. Not completely mind boggling really....perhaps his agent felt NO was going to be trading out therefore not picking him, the Titans going with Leinart or Young, Jets going with Brick or QB. Maybe they see the potential he could fall to 5 or worse (only because of the other teams glaring needs) and therefore would accept some 3 pick money or something similiar. Anyways....i still feel the same....DD doesn't need to be sitting on the bench rotting with our money in his hand (that he rightfully earned). Bush is awesome....but our record isn't going to jump 5 wins because we found a way to run the ball better....now putting some pressure on the QB.....

I think if they wanted to scare Bush by negotiating with someone else, it should have been Vince Young. The fact that they chose to do it with Williams instead means they are really serious about him and I'm not so sure that's a good thing at all.

edit: I really don't know how I feel about Williams at #1, but that's exactly what scares me. It's too unexpected.

BTW Mario's production isn't erratic like everyone says....the last half of the season he changed a part of his technique that helped him....i can't find the article right now but it was pretty detailed and interesting....maybe someone else can't help remember. Regardless....and i just noticed he has been 21 for all of 3 months or so....

But its not like Mario got shut out by good O-lines or ever completely disappeared in games like people want to say....first half was good....second half was a terror.

kastofsna....still feeling confident about Cutler in the top 4?

Then why did he have the same "issue" during his junior year?

Well if he is going to be accused of something....it should be not always playing hard. Which is a big deal don't get me wrong. But saying his production is completely erratic sort of gives the notion that he can't always get it done against certain types of linemen or O-line schemes....which isn't the case. But like i said....he was 20 years old this past season....19 his junior year....kid isn't going to get away with taking plays off here....and i believe he knows that. Once again like so many people seem to forget....our coaches and GM actually get to talk to this guys....and i'm sure they know just as much (aka 'way ****ing more) about these 'production issues' and whether they should continue.

If the Texans pick Mario Williams first overall...anyone want some season tickets? :hairpull: :crying: :brickwall I will be completely pissed if they have taken us through 2-14, then through a Vince-Reggie tease, only to get some guy that played hard in about half the games he plays in. I will now light myself on fire.
