Mock Draft 8.0

LINK

1. 49ers Alex Smith* QB Utah 1st SAME 1st / 24th
Niners' officials have arrived at two conclusions: 1) They won't be able to trade down and 2) The team cannot win in the short term. So, the 49ers should take the QB with the most upside and develop him slowly. Smith could sit behind Tim Rattay in 2005 and learn without undo pressure and not take a beating behind a rebuilding offensive line. Smith has a strong arm, outstanding athleticism and winning intangibles.

2. Dolphins Ronnie Brown RB Auburn 2nd SAME 2nd / 25th
Nick Saban is a defensive-minded coach, but he has final say on all personnel matters. He needs a workhorse back to make his conservative, ball-control offense work. Brown, with his great combination of power and speed, is tough to tackle and also excels as a receiver.

3. Browns Derrick Johnson OLB Texas 6th (+3) 3rd / 6th
Romeo Crennel wants to build the New England way — defense first. Johnson is the consensus best defensive prospect in this draft. Outside linebacker is key to the success of Crennel's 3-4. Johnson, a great athlete, also shows terrific natural football instincts.

4. Bears Braylon Edwards WR Michigan 4th SAME 1st / 4th
Chicago will take the biggest playmaker on the board. Some say Mike Williams would be the top receiver choice, but Edwards is faster and has a better character grade. Edwards, in addition to his solid frame, has great hands and the potential to become an All-Pro wideout. He immediately would become the Bears' best offensive player.

5. Buccaneers Carnel Williams RB Auburn 5th SAME 4th / 25th
Coach Jon Gruden says he never can have enough offensive cogs. The public favorite is Tampa native Mike Williams, but the Bucs are in more need of a workhorse back. This Williams has the body to take the pounding and the speed to be a home-run threat.

6. Titans Aaron Rodgers* QB California 3rd (-3) 1st / 16th
Despite what Titans officials say, the team is rebuilding. Although Jeff Fisher is a defensive-minded coach, GM Floyd Reese will make this call. Rodgers would sit behind Steve McNair, learn without undue pressure and keep from taking a beating behind a shoddy offensive line.

7. Vikings
(from Raiders) Mike Williams* WR USC 7th SAME 5th / 21st
The Vikings rebuilt their defense through the free-agent market and trades and would look to replace some of Randy Moss' production here. Williams is big (6-4 5/8, 229), physical and fast enough to create mismatches all over the field.

8. Cardinals Cedric Benson RB Texas 8th SAME 2nd / 8th
The Cardinals have outstanding young receivers, upgraded their offensive line with free agents and have put a Band-Aid on QB. Coach Dennis Green covets a power running back, and Benson has both the size (222 pounds) and will to run hard between the tackles and both the great vision and speed to get outside. Benson would balance the offense and take pressure off Kurt Warner.

9. Redskins Adam Jones* CB West Virginia 9th SAME 8th / 32nd
After trading Champ Bailey last year and losing free-agent Fred Smoot this year, the Redskins now have a glaring need at cornerback. Jones lacks great size (5-9 5/8) but is a big-time playmaker with a confident, winning attitude. He tends to gamble, but his risky decisions usually pay off. Jones would need to become a better assignment corner in Gregg Williams' disciplined defense.

10. Lions Antrel Rolle CB Miami (Fla.) 10th SAME 6th / 13th
Facing the Vikings and Packers twice a year in the pass-happy NFC North, Detroit is forced to use nickel personnel about two-thirds of the time on defense. Rolle (6-0 5/8, 197, 4.49) raises his good size and decent speed with impressive intelligence and instincts.

11. Cowboys Troy Williamson* WR South Carolina 11th SAME 7th / 2nd round
With the first of two first-round picks, the Cowboys can get the missing piece in their attempt to re-create the QB-RB-WR Triplets magic of the '90s — shifty Julius Jones and strong-armed Drew Bledsoe are the other two ingredients. Williamson would become Bledsoe's top deep threat and open things up for Jones, Jason Witten and Keyshawn Johnson underneath.

12. Chargers
(from Giants) Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma 12th SAME 11th / 2nd round
San Diego would be thrilled if Clayton still were on the board here. Clayton, drawing comparisons to Marvin Harrison, is a playmaker who can score from anywhere on the field. He is a bit undersized (5-10 3/8, 193) but shows elite speed, hands and agility.

13. Texans Alex Barron OT Florida State 13th SAME 5th / 14th
The Texans would be happy beneficiaries if Barron slides this far down. Huge (6-7½, 320) with outstanding athleticism, he excels in pass protection. Barron might struggle, however, if he must play right tackle because he isn't a great run blocker. He still should start as a rookie.

Tampa won't take Cadillac over Mike Williams...

I don't see Tennessee taking a QB this year...They'll probably wait until next year and take Leinart...

Benson won't fit well in Arizona's WCO, and Dennis Green has never coveted power backs...

Mark Clayton won't be a top 12 pick, and San Diego would take Barron or Spears before Clayton...

I'd hate to see us take Barron with Spears still available...I don't think it would be advantageous for us to start another rookie at LT, especially one who *allegedly* can't run block and doesn't even like to play football...

Yes titans can still get a couple good years out of McNair/Volek, and im not posotive but wasnt Gruden the guy that was really high on Cadillac? perhaps thats what they were thinking.

If we take Barron or ANY o-line with our first pick I will be VERY dissapointed. I dont think any player has the skills to be that high of a pick and they wouldnt be starting on our line. I want an impact player that will have a chance to start or get valuable playing time this year.

Gruden was really high on Cadillac at the Senior Bowl and was really high on Mike Williams at the combine...He has supposedly assured both that they would be the Bucs' pick at 5, but Michael Clayton has been campaigning for them to take Williams...Both are viable selections for them, but I think Mike is a better player...

Has he? Can't go wrong with Williams (whichever one that is). :)

From what i have been hearing its Cadillac Williams to Tampa possibly Benson to Bears. I personally think the Bears would be better off with Braylon Edwards.

Shaun Cody is dropping like a lead balloon in most of the mocks. I've seen him as low as the 3rd round in some versions lately. I thought he was overrated early on but kind of trusted the 'network' of football guys....but it sure looks like he may end up this years Randy Starks for some reason.

Where did you here that he doesnt like to play football, and he can run block, hes just not a superb run blocker, he excells in pass protection and thats what I think we need. I really dont htink that Barron would be a bad idea. I really dont believe that Wand is a franchise LT, and Barron can be that.

They have him going at 27 on this mock to the Falcons right before Matt Roth at 28...Any reason why his stock has dropped so much?

Early on I never really figured out what all the hype was all about...but I just assumed he played better than the times I saw him. The only thing I have heard was that he is a big partier, but other than that I haven't heard much scuttlebutt.

Shaun ran his 40's over 5 seconds at his pro day. He'll probably run again in private workouts, but we won't see those numbers. Cody has more positives on tape than Starks did, so I can't see him dropping to the 3rd. But out of the 1st...looks like it.

Clayton Pushing For Williams
Clayton already has befriended Williams, who was barred from the 2004 draft and then declared ineligible to return to USC for his junior season.

``I want to be here to see my teammate,'' Clayton said. ``He's going to help me be the best person and player I can be.''

``Oh yeah, he can play,'' said Clayton, who isn't sure Williams will be available for Tampa Bay at No. 5. ``That's a guy you need to get. He won't be around long.''

The Wright Stuff, 3/23/2005
The big question with Barron will be his drive and desire and you wonder if he has the "football" mentality that all the greats ones posess

I can't say that he can't run block, because I've only see him play once and only saw him on a few plays...I was merely saying that per this mock, he can't run block...Barron may well end up being a better NFL LT than Wand, but I don't think that we should spend our first round pick on a guy that will sit on the bench most of his rookie season when we have so many holes on our D...

Here is something I found on Shaun Cody at draftdaddy.com, and I am not familiar with this site at all...

Shaun Cody
USC

This first round "lock" has been tabbed in recent days by those in the know as a second rounder at best. As a large DE like Shawn Ellis or Michael Strahan on the outside he projects alot better - and should a team move him there we like his chances more. however flat out this man is just not good enough against the run to be a top notch DT. Cody ran around the Senior Bowl like a chicken without a head, doing spin moves (like that's really gonna work at the next level) - and then he only ran a 5.03 on a fast track at his pro day (not a 4.75 as expected). So he's not especially fast and he's small?

Speaking freely, Cody's got his head up his #$% with the camera crews on spikeTV and without agent representation. He's basically a pretty boy at an ugly man's position and I have to question his intensity, toughness and commitment. The place for pass rush specializing "finesse DT" that can’t stop the run is in the pass happy Pac-10 not the NFL. Word is he is believing his "net hype" and has gained a reputation as a "partier." Well here's some net hype for Mr. Cody - Shaun, if you want to be on reality TV so bad maybe you should audition for the next real world, they are always in the market for photogenic fancy pants.

I think his bowl game had alot to do with his stock being so high to start with. But now its coming back down to earth. my :twocents:

 I've never seen a DT try a spin move...If this is accurate, I really don't want to see Cody on this D-Line...

I had Cody pegged as a Hovan-DT not too long ago . Last year I started to fall for the hype on a couple of players as well (Randy Starks and Isaac Sapoaga). I should listen to myself more. :heh:

Based on what I've read about Barron and the rest of this year's prospects on the offensive line, I wouldn't want the Texans to take an offensive lineman with the 13th pick. An explosive receiver or pass rusher would be a better choice.

However, if the Texans trade down in the first round to stockpile picks, I will be disappointed if they don't use a late first rounder or second rounder to pick an offensive lineman. The offensive line needs a serious infusion of talent across the board. If the line can't block, having a franchise quarterback, a franchise receiver and a good runner means nothing.

the only offensive linemen i would want to see us take in the first would be david bass. we need a new center/guard. i would give barron till next year at least, better talent at tackle anyways. our interior linemen is what we need help on: pitts, mckinny, weigert.
upgrade some of that before tackles, they dont run around our guys, they just go straight through them.

Well the interior line i dont think did so bad. The outside rush is what got us most last year. If we do go OL we will go OT. It looks highly unlikely to me we would go OL til 3rd or 4th round though.

You really need to go back and watch for example the 3rd quarter of the Bears game or heck any of the Browns game.

I should have started a "definitive statement/crystal ball absoluteness" thread at the beginning of draft season--a lot of your posts would have made the list.

they werent doing that bad.. the browns game i feel the hole team wasnt tryin their hardest. Seems like they were all already on vacation. The Browns came in and said hey we dont care. Were going out winners in a losing season. The Texans were happy to be 7-9 and went out losers in a promising season. 3rd OL would suffice

Our Existing tackle tandem can both run block better than pass block.

Wade wasn't neccesarily a rock of gibraltor out there at RT on passing plays.

How they plan to remedy that problem is up to the line coach. Any Lineman we get beyond the first round is likely to sit and be a project lineman like Wand was 2 years ago.

Anything is better than Pitts at LT in my opinion he cant keep his hands inside the numbers and got flagged repeatedly for holding, and illegal hands, hence his move back to his natural position, guard.

I just feel OL isnt worth it this year id rather us if we cant protect Carr and have a losing season put in Banks for the year and draft Oline next year when there is a plethora of Lineman available.

Pitts' natural position is OT; he never played OG prior to last season...He was projected to play OG in the pros, but he was the best we had at LT when Boselli wasn't able to go...Also, some would argue that our line played better with Pitts at LT in 2003 than it did in 2004 with Pitts at LG and Wand at LT...

Many people feel that Pitts is our best OT. He certainly had a better year at OT than Wand did. After 3 years now I would figure people would understand that Pitt's first year ever at Guard was last year.

He has hand placement problems Id rather us not make a first down at all, rather than having a big play called back because of a holding call on Pitts. Or illegal hand to the face.
(Although it did aid in Carr's survival in '03) I think Wand will be better this year no matter how much you practice and sit on the bench you dont realize how fast some D lineman are till you are lined up against them. Nothing should be more motivational to Wand than watching the game film of Freeney man handling him. I think he gets better this year.
