The Detroit Lions 2005 Draft
Traded #41 for Eagles #63 and #77
Round 1-10: Shawne Merriman, DE, Maryland (ranked #10)
-Another playmaker on the DL opposite James Hall-moves Redding inside and for depth there
Round 2-63: Josh Bullocks, FS Nebraska (ranked #48)
-A playmaker in the secondary that can play either safety positions moves- Brock over to SS
Round 3-72: Ray Willis, OT, Miami (ranked #63)
-Overshadowed by Barron but is a tenacious mauler that will fit right in at the RT spot- replaces McDougle
Round 3-77: Logan Mankins, OG, Fresno State (ranked 80)
-Depth and eventual starter inside at OG- replaces DeMulling
Round 4-113: Alfred Fincher LB Connecticut (ranked 83)
-Most people had Fincher going in the second round and is a steal here- Moves Lehman to MLB and takes the SLB position

Detroit Lions Needs: by Don Banks
Right offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker
The chalk pick says the Lions need to replace the departed Stockar McDougle at right offensive tackle, but even top-rated tackle Alex Barron might be a stretch at the No. 10 slot. That said, the Lions could go a lot of different directions, because they covet a play-making defensive end (Shawne Merriman?), and could also be very happy with the draft's top linebacker, Derrick Johnson. After drafting for offense so often in recent years, the odds are that Detroit will try to find its tackle after the first round and devote its top pick to adding a defender who can make a quick impact.
