I was watching ESPN news the other day after the Senior Bowl and Mel Kiper had a mock draft. He had us picking Mike Williams. Would this be a good pick for us?
 
I think he gets caught in the want vs. need category.

We want a big play reciever like Mike. But he isnt a big need.

But you have to think, if we cant get it to the guys we have already a good percentage of the time, why add in another WR to split the looks?

If the Texans dont go defense with the #13 pick, the only position I see them going for is WR.

OL? Is a rookie going to outperform one of our veterans?
QB? No
RB? Maybe 3rd round.
TE? ??????????????
 
We have other pressing needs, so at first glance I would say no. We need offensive line and defensive line help.

But, on the other hand, there might not be OL or DL players worth the 13th pick. You have to seriously ask yourself if Mike Williams is a playmaker. Casserly and Capers like to take playmakers with the 1st pick, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they took him.

You cant just "take care of your problems in FA." You would be in cap hell.

I wouldnt be upset to get Mike. But I do think the team needs to focus on getting a player more towards our needs.

If Mike is the BPA, then I say get him. But if there is a BJ, or Adam Jones, or even Thomas Davis, then you have to go another route.
 
no. someone needs to take the pressure off Carr so he can get the ball to Dre. The pressure isnt on Dre..

We DO need someone opposite him that can spread the field.. is Mike Williams that guy? doubtful.. he isnt fast enough. I wouldnt complain if we got him, but he isnt a big need, so.. unless he is BPA.. no i dont think we grab him or need him.
 
Don't give me the BS he is not fast enough. To much is put into little 40 times. How many times is he going to run a straight 40 in a game? And did a 40 ever hurt him at USC?

I think this is where the topic gets interesting............Mike Williams would definately be a target in the endzone. And where did we have trouble on offense? Stalling in the Red zone. I don't know the exact % of times we kicked a FG in the red zone, but I remember toward the beginning to middle of the season that seemed to be a problem for us was not converting for TDs. If we did draft Mike Williams I never thought it he would be seriously used for moving the ball between the 20's, but in the red zone will we see his true production for us.
 
Michael Clayton is even slower than Mike Williams and he turned out just fine. In fact, he had an even better rookie season than our own Andre Johnson.
 
I hope he is available and I hope there is a bidding war for our pick ... so we can trade down and gain more picks (as long as it isn't llike the 29 pick or so)

I'd love to have a mike Williams,but we have more pressing needs right now

Yes. We need someone who can get the ball if/when they double Andre. That may be the big FA pick up this year.
 
I wouldnt have a problem with the Texans taking Mike Williams @ 13 even though there are amny more pressing needs . Although he could possibly fill one of those more pressing needs with a move to the TE position . At 6'5" 230 he has the size for the position and with his speed would pose some Serious match-up problems for the opposing defenses . The main question here is IF he is a good enough blocker to make the switch worth the pick .

Tony Gonzalez @ 6'3" 248 (Chiefs) Marcus Pollard @ 6-3, 247 (Colts) Are two of the most effective TE's in the NFL , Williams size matches up with them minus about 17 lbs .

Even if he doesnt have the blocking skills to be an NFL TE the tandem of Andre Johnson and Mike Williams @ the two wide out positions would definately open up the center of the field . Opposing teams couldnt afford to stick 8 men in the box every play because of the big play threat thus opening up the running game . Even with the mediocre O-Line the offense would be better by leaps and bounds. (The O-Line would still need to be addressed @ some point either via draft or free agency)

The other question becomes .... Is there enough Football to go around with Johnson , D.Davis , Gaffney and Williams . The answer is simple ..... WINNING SOLVES EVERYTHING!

Call me crazy but the idea of a play-maker like Mike Williams going against a safety or linebacker is ...... the type of Mis-match coaches try to exploit at every possible opportunity.
 
The "BS" about being fast enough applies in this case.

The role that we need in our #2 receiver is someone who can get down the field very quickly and pull the CB and FS with him.. someone who is going to open things up the middle for Dre.

Mike Williams be plenty fast for a #1 receiver.. and definatly for a slot receiver.. but when you need someone SPECIFICALLY for speed.. he isnt fast enough.. bottom line. You want someone who is so fast that it is going to WORRY the defense about staying in front of him.

So would there be a problem with putting AJ as the #2, and Williams as the #1? AJ to spread the field, and Mike to run around in the middle?

I would love to see opposing DB's cover that.

Most pro scouts are looking at him as more an H-back instead of a wideout. They dont think he will have the ability to get any separation with a NFL corner on him. And you can out jump people all you want, but you cant do that on every reception.

I am hot and cold on him. He could easily be a bust due to issues about getting open, but then he could be a great possession reciever for years to come. Dunno.
 
As i stated in an above reply (and no one responded to) ..... he may be better suited to the TE position . He would pose some serious match-up problems , Having a LB or Saftey cover this guy one on one is a mis-match plain and simple . He does have enough size , the only question here is does he have the blocking skills to be an every down TE or does he just become a more talented version of Billy Miller ?
