Mel Kiper Mock Draft 3.0

J_R

Veteran
Mock Draft:

1. Carolina - Blaine Gabbert, QB, Mizzou
2. Denver - Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
3. Buffalo - Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
4. Cincinnati - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
5. Arizona - Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
6. Cleveland - A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
7. San Francisco - Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
8. Tennessee - Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
9. Dallas - Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
10. Washington - Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
11. Houston - J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
Wade Phillips will love Watt, a big, aggressive, smart and scheme-versatile defensive end who can offer an immediate help for a defense in need of bodies for the front seven. At 290 pounds, with a really good burst and a relentless nature, you can do a lot with Watt along the defensive line. Houston has to find some pass-rush help to complement the great Mario Williams, and this is a good place to look.
12. Minnesota - Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
13. Detroit - Tyron Smith, OT, USC
14. St. Louis - Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois
15. Miami - Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
16. Jacksonville - Aldon Smith, OLB, Missouri
17. New England - Ryan Kerrigan, OLB, Purdue
18. San Diego - Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
19. New York Giants - Mike Pouncey, G, Florida
20. Tampa Bay - Justin Houston, DE, Georgia
21. Kansas City - Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
22. Indianapolis - Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
23. Philadelphia - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
24. New Orleans - Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple
25. Seattle - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
26. Baltimore - Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
27. Atlanta - Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa
28. New England - Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami
29. Chicago - Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
30. New York Jets - Rahim Moore, S, UCLA
31. Pittsburgh - Dan Watkins, OG, Baylor
32. Green Bay - Brooks Reed, OLB, Arizona

If Gabbert goes first overall I am going to guess he will be one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

Hello Ryan Leaf.

Seriously is he ANY better than Clausen coming out?

I would think they go Bowers, Darius or Peterson. QB just doesnt make sense #1. They have Clausen still. No reason to draft another QB that needs work.

Cam at #4??? really?

I can see this. The guy had a great pro-day yesterday. There are 3-4 teams up top that are desperate for QBs and right now have no hope of anyone on their squad developing or they have a guy like Palmer leaving. There is no sure free agency anytime soon so they have to try the draft.

I think Newton is best to sit too.

I think they both have work to do, I just think that Newton has FAR FAR more potential than Gabbert and will be able to survive in the pro's if he is thrown in the deep end while I think Gabbert won't.

What, you think Cam is? Really? Did you WATCH the combine?

Oh and I am sorry, I didn't realise that the combine is where you define how competent a QB is in actual games.

Have they changed the rules in the new CBA so QBs get to wear shorts and t-shirt and aren't allowed to get hit?

Mel w/ his thoughts or reasoning on Gabbert/Newton.

1. Carolina Panthers
* Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
There's a thought process here that goes beyond need. For one, Gabbert impressed in Indy, and his pro day next week will help determine if he has the potential to land here. Two, I expect any labor deal that gets worked out will create a rookie salary scale that limits the massive bonuses for top picks, making it easier to trade up and down in the draft, which has become increasingly difficult. So it makes sense for Carolina to project that it could take one of the top quarterbacks and open up the trade options, in essence, saying, "To guarantee a shot at the one you prefer, talk to us." Lastly, while I still believe in Jimmy Clausen's chances given his youth, Ron Rivera could not be blamed for targeting his own vision of a franchise quarterback with a pick here or via free agency. It's a leverage position now, but also a potential pick. Part of it is up to Gabbert.

4. Cincinnati Bengals
* Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
In 2003, Marvin Lewis' first year as head coach with the Bengals, the franchise drafted Carson Palmer, and had the discipline to start Jon Kitna all season and let Palmer learn the system while waiting to step in as the franchise quarterback. With Palmer on his way out, Lewis could do something similar in 2011, drafting Newton, letting him take a year to learn the system and plugging in an interim solution in the meantime. The Bengals could also consider moving this pick, similar to Carolina's position with Gabbert.

I didn't realize that winning the Heisman at the QB position was a guaranteed success at the position either. The Texans aren't starting Leinart why again?

If you think you can compare passing (you know when those QB's actually throw the ball) competency between Cam and Gabbert as being anywhere close (as exposed , quite painfully at the combine), you're delusional.

Feel free to carry on.

Agreed. Personally, I still don't think there's a QB worthy of a 1st round pick this year.
The problem isn't whether a guy is "worth it" as much as whether he'll still be there when you get to pick again. For some teams, they'll be worth the risk. I expect 2-3 to be taken in the first this year.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but I hope there's at least two teams drafting in the top 10 that do. Beyond that, I don't give a flying flip one way or the other.

gabbert, newton, and locker are locks to go in the 1st IMO. i would take none of them unless they were there in the 2nd. terrible year to need to QB but that's what is raising the value on these guys.

One thing we can guarantee regarding Kiper & his picks...

He'll be shaking his head on ESPN again during the draft, talking about how much "value" x-player has and how he can't believe player has still not been selected.
:hankpalm:

I think he is still in throw it against the wall, see if it sticks mode.

Don't pay him much attention until less than month or so to go then he gets his inside tips following prospects pro-days/personal workouts.

Kiper's still a moron, but I wouldn't be upset with Watt. I like him

Me niether, Watt would push MW and AS. This is something that's been lacking. (Competition)

With that said, I would take Quinn if he was still on the board.

I only hope that the Texans have a choice of choosing from Quin, Aldon Smith,
Kerrigan, and Justin Houston for a player to rush the QB.

I'm really expecting a trade down and selection of Purdue boy

It would be hard to argue with that if it's what we did.

Get a talented player at a position of need plus add extra picks? I'm all for it.

I think it might be the best move. I think Kerrigan is going to be a hell of a player

I posted a mock draft with a trade down (NE) targeting Ayers, but also mentioned Kerrigan, Houston.

Ayers is still someone to watch out for I think he transitions quicker & is more fluid. The problem is UCLA players have a soft label compared to percieved toughness of a Boilermaker.

I´m not sure I´d draft a DE 1st... I mean with Mario and Smith our starters should be set (or do we have that little confidence with Smith in a 3-4 after he had a pretty good year) - but at other positions (OLB, NT, FS, SS, CB heck even G or maybe even WR) we definetly need more help! Now I´m totally fine with drafting bpa but I don`t see that big a gap between Watt and let`s say Aldon Smith...

But really I guess I´d be most comfortable with a trade... either up to grab Peterson/von Miller/Fairley or down to grab one of the OLBs.

Then your not looking hard enough.
