McNair should apply heat, grill the decision makers

Texans owner Bob McNair should have a long talk with his football staff this week.

He should start by asking why Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson caught just two passes during Sunday's 22-14 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

He should have other questions as well. Questions about pass protection. Questions about play-calling. Questions about preparation.

But he should begin with Johnson.

He should ask about Johnson's comments that the Browns didn't do anything special to stop him. He had single coverage on many first-down plays and the usual double coverage on obvious passing downs.

McNair should remind his coaches that Johnson is the Texans' best offensive player. He's the guy who causes opponents to sweat, the guy capable of changing a game.

As good as running back Domanick Davis has been, he doesn't strike fear in the heart of opposing defenses.

Johnson does. He's way too good to be a decoy.

I guess I need to watch what routes AJ are running. Heck,the Browns were running alot of crossing patterns. Gosh,put him in motion..line him in backfield..Pass protection was pathetic..as soon as Carr go into his drops, he was running for his life. Upgrade at TE and 2nd threat at WR (Bradford not the answer);OL needs help

That is absolutly absurd poor use of a great weapon. The game calls and o-line failing to protect are the MAIN reasons for this. Not the only as David needs to find him, but certainly the main ones.

McNair was on the post game Channel 13/Bob Allen show last night, and
when Allen asked 'him 'bout personnel needs/priorities for the off season, the only thing he said was that Carr would be our QB for many years and we
needed to protect him. I'm taking that to mean that O-Line won't be just
"a" priority, it will be "the" priority. He will send a directive to Cass to go strong in FA/Draft to get a big time LT 'cause that's the most important position in the OL. If Wand can beat that guy out down the line, OK but they aren't gonna rely solely on him (Wand). Plus they will get an upgrade for McKinney as the concensus seems to be he is a real weak link and already overcompensated. But with Carr's 6-sack day in the last game of the 3rd
season still vividly clear in his mind, he definitely is tired of seeing his franchise player getting beat up and is going to everything he can to put an
end to it.

I agree with you that McNair sent the message out that the pass protection problems must be addressed. But, I don't think McNair will micromanage Casserly & Capers to the point that he pinpoints specific positions or players. He'll leave the details to C&C.

I doubt he will micro-manage also, but I suspect he will make his feeling about Carr getting beat to a pulp all the time known. I also doubt we get a big name LT as Wand has done fairly well and improved as the season went on. Now McKinny on the other hand seems to resemble a turnstile most of the time or just plain gets beat up and molested by the defense. The RG spot could use an upgrade also. I am not as down on Brown as Grid is, but he isn't the answer IMO and neither is Weighert. I doubt we could draft a center or RG candidate that we could reasonably expect to come in and be a starter, but should be able to shore it up in FA and draft a couple of good developmental guys.

why are people so down on Wiegert? he was injured for a while this season.. but when he is playing he is a great lineman. heck he was our best lineman last season.

Well, if they want instant results...the draft is no way to produce a starter, FA is. Unless the guy is a Gallery, I just don't see us doing another "experiment" like we did with Wand.

Sorry with Capers defensive line is 1st priority. That's why I keep saying until DOM leaves we go nowhere. Only McNair can say enough is enough. I have been posting also that only FA can change us if next year is to be a playoff year. The draft can't do it as it takes too much time and we simply don't have enough draft picks to fix what's wrong. I was reading Clayton's comments on coaching changes and the Jags have the opposite problem. The team is on the hot seat, because LSU may want Del Rio. The Jags would need to give him a contract extension and some other incentives. They also commented on how they couldn't fill the stadium even for the Texans. I still say if Casserly's seat gets hot, so will DOM's. The reporting of the Holgren rumor still seems to be an interesting one, but who knows. All I know is that when this kind of media attention begins to appear about the coaching staff there is some fire somewhere. There are also way too many comments or noncomments coming out of Carr, Glenn and others. I think a lot of people have lost confidence in Capers and its coming out in bits and pieces. The Ravens just fired their OC.
