Matt Jones...TE in the making?

J-Man

Waterboy
Folks I just wanted to throw this on the table...Matt Jones, TE, Houston Texans.

Jones had a great Senior Bowl as a pass catcher and clocked a 4.39 40 time at the combine and he is listed at 242lbs. I think he might be a big time steal in the 2nd or 3rd round. He could project to us as an TE/H-Back or slot receiver, pack 10lbs on him and as long as he chip and work double team blocks he could be an excellent addition to the offense.

His is another type of Tweener, add 10lbs and he's a TE, drop 10lbs and he's is an animal of a slot guy. The more I see of him the more intrested I am in his ability to contribute to our team. The added bonus of being a QB for the majority of his HS and college career could open up several other options for the offense (I'm thinkng of him as a blue collar "Slash").

Your thoughts guys?

I would love to see Matt Jones be drafted by the Texans.

Granted, it will take him one or two seasons to fully integrate into his role, much like Ward and Randle El, but if this guy pans out, he will be a beast.

However, I would rather see him be drafted by the Falcons..... now THAT'S excitement! :)

I can't see him as a TE either. He will get used trying to block down linemen.

I still have nightmares from his big game against the Horns in 2003. I had seats in the front row of the upper deck right at the 50-yard-line for that debacle.

Most coaches and scouts would disagree. Especially the ones that chose to practice him at TE in the senior bowl

Mike Williams 6' 4" 230 lbs 4.6 40 yd
Matt Jones 6' 6" 237 lbs 4.39 40 yd

Hmm, obviously one of these will be a stellar WR and one will have to play TE.

Don't think either of these guys is particularly suited to participating as a conventional TE any time soon--learning to block DE's ain't that easy, ask Billy Miller. If a team has an OL that doesn't regularly need the assistance of the TE's then either of these guys could be big contributors but that really is just a label attached to where they line up at that point.

I would love to have that talent on our team. If he was still available in the middle rounds we better scoop him up. I would go to say best available in the first, Baas if still around in the second, and Matt asap. I watched that Horns game too and I was screaming at this guy, I freaking hated his guts. It'd be nice to have him on our side that is for sure.

:woot I had a mock on a thread about a month ago it was

1 Spears
2 Baas
3 M. Patterson
3b L. Mitchell
4 M. Jones

At that time I thought it was reasonable now I'm thinking no way these players are there .

he is rough.. as a WR he runs sloppy routes and im not sure about his hands.

Id like to see what he can do as an RB. with that size and speed.. if he can break tackles he could be awesome.

I would not be against grabbing him and turning him into a project.. at TE, RB, or WR.

This guys natural position would probably be as a TailBack in the Single Wing,
but they don't run the SW much anymore so thats out. Another idea might be the decathelon, but of course that's Track not football. And one is not born a blocker, it is an acquired skill - he'd have to get that down to play TE.
I dunno,he is a football player and competitor by all accounts and he's certainly an athlete - we got 2 third round picks but it sounds like he won't last that long.

Blocking takes more than instruction. Some people can do it and some can't and it takes some physical ability. It's not like Billy Miller is any better a blocker after 3 years of trying desperately to improve. To just assume he will turn into a good blocker with proper coaching is a stretch.

:woot Matt Jones is a weapon . You bring him on the field and think of all the things that can happen . A corner has to play off him because he can run . Carr does one those quick passes except Jones takes three steps back and now is behind him .He has AJ steaking downfield from the other sideline . The point is the defense has to account for him and what he might do .

Jones is fast but not that quick. It takes a few strides to get up to speed. I think that hampers the scenarios you paint. The bottom line with him is that he is going to be a project in the Pros. Some team without an immediate need will likely take him.

I could see the Pats taking him. They have no huge needs and that kind of multipurpose talent is what they like.

Reminds me of when Glenn says he likes to be matched up against taller receivers, because his height disadvantage gives a better quickness.

I don't know if Jones has the vertical to take advantage of his height.... "White men can't jump."

Oh well, let's not forget..... if Jones does turn out to be a beast, there is always Vince Young for those who want a second chance.....

I think the Texans need to take a closer look at Matt Jones this man is a triple threat , he can run, throw, and catch the ball plus he is fast for 6'6" and 248lbs fastest time in the 40 for a QB ever at the combine and he outran some of the best RB's at the combine plus some of the WR's . If he is still around at the Texans pick I think they sure need to get him. any comments on this ?

I think there is a difference between just running fast and playing football. Matt Jones may run fast, but I doubt he'll be able to play receiver or running back. There is more to those positions than just running. There is the little issue of knowing how to play those positions. I don't think in the NFL a guy like Matt Jones can simply be successful by running fast. He has to have the right technique and stuff to switch to those positions. I'm not saying he can't do it, but how many QB's in college have made the successful transition to receiver and running back. There are a few like Randle-El, but more often than not they're not successful. And I think the Texans cannot afford to take risks like this.

There's Ward, Randle El, Drew Bennett, Cordell Stewart (if u want to count the years he played as "Slash"), and probably a few more, but that's all I can think off of the top of my head. I'm of the mindset that a football player is a football player, and I think Matt Jones will find his niche in the NFL. Be it at either TE or WR or whatever. If you've got talent and you're a football player the NFL will find a place for you.

I have been reading some of the write ups about Matt Jones , when you have some one like Bill Parcells, John Gruden, and a number of other NFL coaches and owners saying that he is the most all around athelet that they have seen and then his peers in the SEC saying that he was the best , plus he played Basket Ball for 2 years as a starter , caught a TD in the game in Ga. before the senior bowl and then one in the senior bowl I think he has no problems adjusting his 6'6" body to catch a pass .

That said, if there's anything to be learned, it's that anyone who's been a basketball player and can play TE should be drafted no questions asked. >_>

....and if he busts, well, we can put that stereotype to rest. <_<

Matt Jones is not a TE. He is way too much of a playmaker to play there. He will be a WR, more than likely. He has the size, speed and hands to be an NFL go to guy. I think he should get a shot a QB somewhere before he gets moved to WR. He is just a playmaker. He is very fast and yes, he is quick too. Most people don't think he is very fast until they try to catch him. When he runs he does not look like he is going very fast because of his stride, but he is a blazer. He has made great improvement at the QB position and I was ticked at Mel Kiper when he said that Jones "is an emergency QB at best." I guess Mel Kiper does not always do his homework.
Jones has been great for all us Razorback fans here. You talk about some awsome and exciting Hog games, man the guy is an awsome athlete. He will make it somewhere in the NFL because he is a playmaker. I will be surprised if he is not a day one pick in the draft. The biggest thing he probably needs to work on is to remember to protect the ball!!!

Matt Jones would be a terrible pick for the Texans. The worst ever!!!

To start with guys like him are a dime a dozen. The world is full of 6' 6" guys that run 4.4 forty yard dashes. And the fact that he holds the all time rushing record for QB's in the SEC doesn't mean anything.... I mean how many good QB's has the SEC ever had. And as it has been pointed out above he can't really run the ball very well. He was just lucky all those guys kept missing him. And that's all it was. I'm a Longhorn and I remember Longhorns missing him all day one Saturday in Austin. And he's never been a WR so how would he know anything about it. I mean just because he's been throwing the ball to WR's his entire playing life and he had to know how each one was supposed to run their routes and where they were supposed to be at anytime... and that might mean he knew how up to four or five guys are running their routes... well that doesn't mean he would know anything about running routes. I don't think he's smart enough to understand running routes. And that catch we've all seen from the senior bowl practice where he jumped way up and grabbed the ball high above his head with one hand and brought it in... that's not even the proper way to catch the ball. Everyone knows you're supposed to catch it with two hands. What was he thinking. And I'm not even sure you could break him of old bad habits of wanting to throw the ball at times. He's so dumb that on a flanker around play he might suddenly stop and throw the ball down the field to Andre Johnson.... Poor Andre, knowing he might do that, would probably have to streak down the field, run right past the CB's every time Jones did that flanker around play... just in case he threw the ball. And one more thing... Since Matt Jones is used to being the star he'd probably want a chance to come in and play QB sometimes... you know like when maybe Carr was hurt or maybe when it was fourth and a yard and the Texans were going to run a quarterback sneak.

No, for my money Matt Jones would be a terrible pick. Draft anyone but Matt Jones.

hound, first off it is 4.3 and not 4.4. Second, you think it was "luck" people were missing him????? No, it was not luck, it's called being an athlete. He is good, not lucky. I guess you being a longhorn and all, I can see how you would be bitter about what Jones did to the horns. And yes, he has played WR before in games and he has caught passes. He practiced at WR alot in practices so he has an understanding of the position.

Ya think.

Bump.
Held my water on this one to see where it would go. Gotta guy who can stretch the middle of the feild. "a never say die" playmaker, A winner, a high caracter guy, and a team
that watched one of these guys beat the Bejesus out of us last year in the San Deigo game, can't find a day two pick for this guy ? Hmmm, beam me up Scotty. Don't know who will draft him where, but a couple of years from now there will be all sorts of folks writting that they "knew " he would be a good 'un. I would trade our current collection of TE's for one of Matt Jones. Don't know for sure where Jones is going, but I know what we got. JMHO.

WQQW, think i got it. Thanks

I was just pointing it out to Oiler/Texans since he didn't seem to catch it. Happens to all of us at some point in time. It's a message board and sarcasm doesn't translate as well.

I see it this way...how would the texans NOT draft him? Tell me which draft we havent taken a QB? I dont see us taking an actual QB so let us go the Jammal Lord approach and take a converted QB. You know Charley is going to take a former QB, it is just his style. I dont think our draft would be complete without it. :thumbup

This guy could make a difference for us once in a while, come in and get a big play done. He can play WR for us and maybe push gaffney and armstrong to do better, than we can install little wr reverse plays and watch him blaze by defenders or even do some wr throw plays because remember this guy can throw well too.

This guy would do great for almost any team as a 2nd round pick. the nfl is exists purely because its a form of entertainment. i watched several matt jones games( and i don't say arkansas because it was all matt jones), and he is one of the most entertaining players to watch. He has agility, just ask the horns or any SEC coach/player. He has speed. He has size. He is a football player(played in the 3 longest games in NCAA history according to ESPN). I couldn't believe some of the sacks he avoided even when they came from his blind side. He is also tough, played through 2 injuries. According to the nfl combine he has a very strong arm(2nd highest in this years draft). He definitely lacks in technique as a QB, WR, or TE. But NFL coaches will remedy that quickly. I hear has experience at WR in high school and at arkansas. Oklahoma, FSU, tennessee, and more schools wanted him for WR. He went to arkansas as a WR, but with no talent at qb, you do what you can to get to your playmaker. just happened that he could throw and run too. Its so scary and exciting to imagine what a team might do with him. A team may have to add another playbook just for him.

Or Pittsburgh saves everyone the time of playbook reinvention and drafts him. Then they run like, a bunch of WR option passes just because they can.

matt jones would be like brew bennett of the titans his a tall fast former college qb who is just a great athlete...he can play the tweener type tight end/reciever for us on red zone and third down situations...he would be a great pick up in the third round

I say we draft him, put him opposite of AJ, let them race each other to the end zone, & watch the safeties go crazy trying to figure out which one to slide over & cover. :hairpull: idonno: eek: :heh:

Okay... You guys win.

I guess I was wrong about Matt Jones. Maybe being 6'6" tall and running a 4.39 forty isn't as common as I thought. And I guess it won't be a handicap for him at WR after all.

And maybe his ability to run the ball had something to do with all those yard he got running the ball in college... I thought it was just luck.

And maybe having him on one side of the field opposite AJ... might cause some problems for the defense.... but it just doesn't seem to be a very friendly thing to do... I mean how many guys can they double cover...

And maybe him throwing flanker around touch down passes would be okay after all... or even the defense just worrying that he would throw... wouldn't hurt the team after all...

So you all win!

All of you were right and I was all wrong...

the main thing for matt jones will be if he goes to a team that does not need him to contribute now...if he goest to a team that plans on putting him into the starting lineup this season he'll be screwed...he needs to be brought in like brew bennett was...a season of practice and put in during red zone situations for experience then the next season come in as the number 3 reciever then eventually become the number 2 guy...that way he has time for a good receiving coach to coach him up at the position

another thing to think about this kid...he was a pretty good QB in the SEC...he is obviously not QB material in the NFL but he could come in when needed say your starter, and main back-up gets hurt and your third string goes out there and sucks it up...he could come in as a QB with the thought of mainly handing off the ball and not being required to pass a lot
