would anybody else like to see the Texans draft Nick Mangold if he is still available when Houston makes the 33rd overall selection? LT Pitts, LG McKinney, C Mangold, RG Weigert & RT Wade. looks good in Red

Thats who I want at 33, unless something too good to be true falls out of round 1... But I think he is a necessity

The Scouts Notebook recent Mock draft has Mangold going to arch rival Jacksonville @ #28. To borrow from Matt_Alkire a scout and board contributer here had this to say about Nick Mangold-

"Listed at 6'4" 290lbs. Three year starter for the Buckeyes who makes all the calls and adjustments up front. Good hand placement inside the numbers. Uses hands well. Gets good arm extension to keep defenders off his body. When Nick is beaten he recovers and adjusts well. Has a quick setup off the snap. Displays good footwork. Scrappy guy who plays to the whistle and sometimes past it. Nasty streak."

maybe if we are lucky he may personally add some more information, but from what I watched during Ohio State games he displays great leadership, excellent mobility, ideal size for the position and yes a nasty streak that never quites on a play. I feel he would be an excellent fit here and along with Sherman would give Carr the boost he needs to reach his potential.

If we draft Reggie, its almost certain we use our second round pick on a
OT assuming we don't get one in FA. Mangold is very good, but he's a guard/center, not a tackle.
Now if we'd draft Ferguson, or another OT in the first round, maybe they'd
consider him with the #2. But you can on a regular basis NFL starting guards and centers on the second day, though maybe they aren't elite players like Mangold.

IMO we would get better value if we went Mangold in the second round and a Tackle in the third round. Unless somebody like J Scott falls to the second round.

That is a formula for building mediocrity--passing on an elite player to force a need, especially a need which is arguably no greater than the elite player's position. The new staff has already indicated to McKinney that he will be playing guard remember?

Has there ever been a center taken in the first? I kind of think he's getting overhyped into the first, am I the only one who thinks he might fall further than us in the second.

2005 Chris Spencer at #26 and David Baas at #33 (1 spot out of the 1st round--right where we are this year)
2003 Jeff Faine at #21

Lot's of centers taken in the top half of the 2nd round.

I'll have to disagree with that....Mediocrity would be welcome after the formula gave us our 2-14 implosion.

Texans fan: "You mean we can be mediocre if we do this??? Draft for need, I'm begging you!!":crying:

Quit getting our hopes up.

if we get d'brick in the 1st, with the 2nd we should go for these players in this order- kiwi/hali, mangold, ko simpson, d'quell jackson, pope, any of the good cbs, sims etc, sinorice

remember eslinger in the 3rd wouldn't be much of a fall off in quality imo

I did see all of that, but what what I really liked was something we always looked for in our defensive players in basketball was the head on the swivel. Mangold's head is extremely active on that swivel surveying where the help is needed. He is active from head to foot and can process the info quickly to react with quickness and power.

do you have no long term vision? would you really choose to be mediocre instead of taking a shot at going for a super bowl?

you build to be great for the future, not to be decent next year

I like Nick Mangold...I saw some film of him...and that guy has a real mean streak. Having him at the core of the line could benefit the Texans in the long run. Anybody is better than McKinney, and we would know that Hodgdon could be servicable as a back-up. My little dream is still D'Brick.

The head that Is Mel Kiper thinks he'll fall to the 2nd and be selected between 33-40. Said that during his chat today. He also had Ko Simpson falling to the 2nd. Those would be some good possibilities at 33.
It is Mel Kiper though.

My opinion from another post.

at pick #33, in order:

Ko Simpson - regardless of first round and who else is there.
Nick Mangold - depending on first round pick
Eric Winston - depending on first round pick
Tamba Hali - assuming we dont take Mario
A. Cromatine (sp) - If all of the above players are taken

I agree with most of the picks yall had in that order (Ko, Mangold, etc.) but what do yall think about Lenard Pope with our 2nd 3rd round pick? Seems like an Alge Crumpler to me. Big, good hands, and can run decent routes. Im not to sure of his blocking though. Just a thought.

I would

Buckeye
Grew up with him [I even taught him to and Nugent how to swim]

Or AJ, I know him too :ok:

*yes this is irrelevant, but I love when my home town boys get props!*

I don't think we have the luxury of using our only second round pick on an
interior OLineman, we have too many more pressing priorities: OT, TE, MLB,
DE, etc.
But as far as populating an OL with second day picks, Kubiak's old team does it on a regular basis, and they've got a pretty good OL. Their guy at LT wasn't even drafted when he came out of college. Remember ?

I don't think it is a luxury. You take the best player that is available. If Mangold is that player you take him. If someone is is the best you take them.

You can't honestly expect Pope to be around at pick #66 can you?

He is a late FIRST rounder.

I think our interior line is more of a problem then our tackles.

I think if we get Bush in the 1st round we could very likely go defense in the 2nd round, or maybe OLine, but I don't think that would be limited to OT. All that depends on who is still available. My top choice would be Eric Winston, although I really doubt he makes it that far. My next choice would be Nick Mangold, but I'm skeptical that he lasts that far either. Leonard Pope would also be a nice pick there, but I also really doubt that he lasts. After that, I would look at DE, CB, or OL depending on who is available.

If we don't trade down (kind of doubting it these days) I think public perception will drive the second pick a bit. They need to be seen to be doing something about the O-line just from a PR stand point. They probably don't want to continue to have the jokes about no protection going around. So, as high of a quality lineman they can find would be the order of the day. Again from a public perception standpoint it will likely be a tackle.

If we sign a DE in FA and end up taking Brick in the first with a trade down, I wouldnt be against taking Mangold at 33 as well...We need a solid Oline, we have been begging for one for years...and we finally have a great chance to really build a great one we cant abandon ship for a Safety in my opinion...Earl and CC are solid enough to start for this year...

Im hoping for
1) Mario or Bush (prefer Mario at the moment)...or trade down for Brick
33) Mangold (if taken either Hali, Kiwi)
later picks in various order: MLB, CB, S, TE, G

I believe his stock has really shot up because of his strong performance @ the Senior Bowl, leaving one respected draft source saying "One of the best centers our staff has observed at the Senior Bowl - ever." His hand punch is explosive and stuns the defender, standout in both pass protector & run blocker.

i like pope aswell and would be happy to take him at #33 but theres so many good te's this year that the dropoff in talent ,in lets say FS, is alot bigger than te's..so thats why id take Ko in the 2nd and hopefully Byrd and eslinger in the 3rd

I second the motion that we take KO.
