Make Wells a TE

I think it's a good idea considering his increase in size (like a TE) and his blocking and catching ability.

Well he definetly deserves to come back next year and it would be nice if he could find himself latching on as a TE. He bailed the team out on a few pass plays lastnight and throughout the year.

Wells is one of those under utilized talents in Caper's system---yesterday, he gets one carry for 10 yds and doesn't touch the ball again--take away DD's 2 longest runs and he didn't even avg 3 ypc--Capers will never play the hot hand. It's been suggested before to look at Wells at TE because he can run/block/catch and has decent size plus he's got a great attitude, but this won't happen as long as Capers is around...also, where's Capers main man Hollings at?:brickwall

Wells isn't a very good blocker so I wouldn't want him on an DE too much. He may be used as more of an H back...but they need to be good blockers too.
 
I'm just trying to find any reason to keep this kid here next season because he has been a bright spot this year and is a true special teams leader.

Yea, but blocking can be taught with someone who is interested in learning and has a good attitude. Oh, Gee, I forgot we don't have any coaches. You know Vinny you sound a little bit like the coaches and I know you don't mean to, but its the attitude of not trying people and letting them show what they can do. What do we have to loose, but we could gain a lot. Its like why aren't Mathis and Armstrong playing more? It makes no sense to keep that kind of talent on the bench. I would hope they have the metal capacity to learn at least one new play each week................. Again, I'm being sarcastic about the mental capacity and I hope you get the drift...........

Also, Billy had a number of years to perfect the position and never did. Wells, on the other hand, has not had the opportunity to try and that's all we are talking about.......................

He couldn't stick with the Browns and their TE's aren't very good behind Winslow.
 
One thing to consider is the blocking from movement which at FB/HB does is a different skill set than that of an on-the-line TE. Only a handful of the FB/TE/HB typr players have shown the ability to do both.
 
IMO we need someone that can get into the slot behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties ..... if lining Wells up at TE or H-back accomplishes that then try it ..... not much to lose at this point ...
 
TE ? no way , for one he's not the that great at catching in my opinion, FB would be a good spot for him though , but Norris does well there
 
I say try him out at linebacker! Didn't Marciano say that he'd be a good LB in an article this year? It would really help out our run defense. You might as well try it, because he can't be a bigger bust than Babin.

What I find interesting about your comment is Marciano. The guy keeps popping in unexpected ways. There just might be more talent there than a lot of people think.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Wells in a pattern deeper than 10 yards, but I also don't think I've ever seen him drop anything. Wells has pretty good hands. I think his main problem would be blocking at the line, as Vinny said. That doesn't mean they shouldn't give him some reps there in training camp, but I doubt it would work out. I'd really like to see him as an H-back kind of guy. I think he blocks adequately coming out of the backfield and as I said, his hands are pretty good.
 
Norris is too small for a TE, and Wells likely is too although he's closer to the size that would be good. I had heard someone speculating that Wells could become a LB at some point in his career with his size and speed and since he hits pretty well on special teams. I'm not saying that will happen or that it should but that would be an interesting idea to check out.
 
OK guys, here is my absolutely positively NOVEL idea!

How about play Wells at only the positions he can succeed at and has done well at?!

And, instead of having Wells play all that special teams, RB and also TE, maybe drafting or getting in FA an actual bonafide TE, one who has the body type of a TE, who can both catch AND block. Or maybe getting some more better O linemen, so our TE can do something other than making sure our QB doesn't get murderlized.

Nah, that wouldn't work.




(OK, sarcasm is the lowest form of humor but I suppose it has its place.)
 
I'd like to see him keep taking snaps on ST and at HB and maybe fill in a little at FB and also use him a bit as an H-back, a poor man's Chris Cooley, although I'm not sure if he has the size and hands to be utilized in this latter manner.
 
From what I saw on "the" onside kick, Wells didnt even block for Coleman. I've also seen him a few times on kickoff let go of his blocks early to celebrate. Good blocker??? Yeah..right...
 
Wells is a good blocker for a RB and has size to do it. He is not an elite blocker compared to many TEs or anything, but he has the size and ability to be a functional blocker in special teams or out of the backfield.
 
Wells isn't a good blocker for a RB....I have seen him totally whiff on blocks as the lead FB in most of the running plays where he was the lead....probably why we don't see him do it much now.
 
well ive also seen him make some good blocks when he chips the DE. he probably wont work out at FB or TE for that matter but as an H-back he might find his niche.

also his catching ability is overlooked IMO
 
H-backs have to apply what is commonly known as a "wham-block" in the hole against a linebacker or an unblocked lineman...this is more of a fullback block and less of a chip style block (and a chip block is not really a full block).
 
You want to know what I'd like to see Wells do?

He's clearly much improved over the Jonathan Wells we saw back in 2002 and he has apparently matured a great deal in his years as a backup and special teams player. He's also learned how to run hard and he's got much more energy than the lethargic young man who started for us 3 years ago.

I want to see the coaches start Wells and run him 25-30 times against somebody. I'd like to see if he can standout a little bit.

Somebody said this earlier, and I'll repeat it, Capers won't play a hot hand. Face it, Capers is not a creative coach. He doesn't change his gameplan to fit the opponent, and he won't mess with his personnel setup either. Wells could get on the field, push Carr out of the way, hike the ball, drop back in the pocket and avoid all the opposing linebackers singlehandedly, toss the ball 90 yds, run down field and catch his own pass, push all the secondary out of his way, do fifteen cartwheels into the end zone, then go for the two-point conversion by running over the defense's heads like stepping stones, climb into the stands and heal a little boy of cancer and he still won't see any more playing time than what Capers already determined at the beginning of the season. Everybody has their role and barring injury that's where they'll stay.
 
I find it ironic that people whine that Davis is not a good RB because he doesn't have breakaway speed and then it is suggested that we start Jonathan Wells for him who has even less speed.

Last season and in the few moments I've seen him this season Wells just looks like he finally figured out that he was a big guy and should run like a big guy. I'd like to see if he gets stronger as the game goes along. A lot of them do.

What do you say we look at what the bigger, faster running back can do? ;)
 
No big deal, I just don't think either one of them is very fast and they're pretty much interchangeable in terms of speed. Davis has always been able to use his moves to greater effect than Wells could use his size. Lately though Jonathan seems to have figured out that he's a big back and he's played more like one. One thing big backs tend to do is wear down a defense over the course of a game. I wonder if Wells could or would do that now.
 
The one place that Wells is head and shoulders better than DD is in BLOCKING. DD is horrible. I'm not a Wells fan by any stretch, but he is a much better guy to have in the backfield to pickup a blitzer and save the QB than DD is.

Yeah but in two of those games that nfl.com says he started he had exactly zero carries. In the other two he carried the ball 13 and 15 times. Not exactly what I had in mind which was 25-30 carries. I wanted him used like a franchise back who's going to carry us to a win even if we're down by 28 points (because frankly this season our defense can't stop anybody enough times to play that kind of grind it out style of offense.

Still I'd just like to see him in that situation.
 
We have completed all of 11 passes to a TE this year for 106 yards. I'd like to see Wells get the ball more often than once a game which is apparently all he'd get if he were a TE.

My, it must be difficult to gameplan against us for our opponent's defensive coordinator. With our assortment of formations, all of the shifts, the possibility that anyone might get the ball, the different pass routes, our confusing audibles, what a daunting offense to read at the line of scrimmage.:sarcasm:

I often wondered if one simple statement, made to both the offensive and defensive coordinators, could make a big improvement to this team. That statement?

"The tight end is an eligible receiver".

LoL, so true. Clark, the TE for the Colts, only had 2 TD receptions for the year at the conclusion of playing us twice, both came against us.
