M<ettenberger and Jernigan failed drug test @ Combine

Just heard this on the radio. Mettenburger reps are claiming it was for insufficient something in his sample due to dehydration from the acl tear

Over training perhaps?

:kitten:

As we previously reported, LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger submitted a diluted urine sample, which he attributes to drinking a lot of water to combat dehydration while rehabbing a torn ACL.

As LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger prepares for the draft, he has a complication to the process unrelated to his torn ACL.

Mettenberger generated a dilute urine sample at the Scouting Combine.

The NFL’s drug-testing policies typically treat a diluted sample as a positive sample.

Mettenberger’s physical therapist, Jason Eliowitz, attributes the positive test to efforts to combat dehydration. Eliowitz explains in the letter to Dr. Lawrence Brown that Mettenberger “was experiencing frequent muscle cramping during the day as well as at night while trying to sleep.” Thus, Mettenberger was advised to drink “as much as 1 to 1.5 gallons of of water per day, to increase his consumption of foods high in potassium, and to increase his sodium intake.”

It’s unclear whether this will shield Mettenberger from the substance-abuse program upon arrival at the NFL. More importantly, it’s unknown whether teams will accept the explanation and not regard the outcome as a red flag regarding efforts to mask either drug use or, given his effort to recover quickly from a torn ACL, the use of performance-enhancing substances.

Damn, that's some talent there...
Timmy Jernigan DT Florida State
LSU DT Anthony Johnson
Miami OT Seantrel Henderson
Florida State LB Telvin Smith
Florida State LB Christian Jones

This won't matter, imo...

If it's all pot, have to wonder if teams drill down to personality testing/interview and go off that. Henderson, for instance, still isn't in shape & bad testing.

Is this real?
I remember they did this (leaking hints at drug usage) to Dan Marino to smear him. ...then years later to Warren Sapp...

Could someone be trying to drive these guys into later rounds?

And I wouldn't trust Glazer any farther than I could throw him.

How is this kind of disclosure just days before the Draft possible without the prospects being afforded the time/opportunity to offer an explanation/clarification ? Or are these leaks intended to torpedo the Draft stock of prospects ?

Being that the news came from Glazer it has a higher degree of believability. Glazer has the best sources of all reporters.

Most likely yes. Glazer(and Nawrocki) is usually the guy who drops these type reports.

Player agents could have gotten out in front of this. I'm sure there was time.

Important detail RT @JayGlazer: Jernigan was diluted sample like Mettenberger. Each team looks at that differently...

Mettenberger's agents Joe Linta and Seth Katz told FOX Sports that the diluted sample was caused by extra water his client was drinking on the advice of his doctor. Linta said Mettenberger had begun to suffer from cramping while rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Linta said he has spoken with NFL teams about the situation and provided medical documentation to Dr. Lawrence Brown, the league's advisor for drugs of abuse, alcohol and HIV. The documentation also was provided to FOX Sports.

Zach Mettenberger's failed drug test could be CATASTROPHIC according to some in the #NFL I tell you why on @FOXSportsLive

Greg Gabriel ‏@greggabe
As far as the NFL is concerned, a diluted sample is a positive test. Don't want to hear Mettenbergers and Jernigan's excuses. It's BS

Jernigan is one of the most over rated in this draft anyway. Henderson most likely goes undrafted now.

Strange advice from his Doc. Muscle cramping is one of the foremost signs of significant OVERhydration (which would also be necessary to test dilute and negative). This is especially poor advice (and poor judgement on the part of Mettenberger), since anyone involved with potential professional NFL Draftees, would know better than to give such advice during a KNOWN NFL drug testing period. :mcnugget:

Forget the Wonderlic. This is the test to determine if a player is not smart enough to play in the NFL. You have an opportunity to play in the NFL and make obscene money. And you can't lay off the weed for a couple of months? Then you think you can outsmart the NFL by drinking a gallon of water? These guys would be off my draft board. Not because they have smoked weed. Who hasn't? But because they've taken a big dump on a chance of a lifetime. They lack judgement. STUPID.

Since this was at the combine, all teams should already know the results. This can only affect the players draft stock from the perception of the media.

15 is a LOT >>>>>>That's more than the average number of failed Combine drug tests each year, right?”

Depends 1 time incident, no worries...pattern - then it hurts >>>>>> In your experience, how much does this hurt players draft stock?

I've heard around 15 players failed drug tests at the combine. Not a great look at the biggest job interview of your life

Sonny we weren't born yesterday >>>>>>FSU DL Timmy Jernigan's diluted sample at combine result of overhydrating per his agent Sonny Shah

Lawrence Taylor/Ricky Williams/Sapp say high.
