LT vs. Vick? If you had to do it over again?

The Bush vs. VY as the first pick reminds me of the San Diego/Atlanta trade when LT went to SD and Vick was chosen by Atlanta. They've both had good careers so far, but who's been better? Can they be compared to Bush vs. VY?

I think that San Diego made the right move. LT is arguably the best player at his position and off the field the guy does not get into trouble and is a great guy. Michael Vick is very inconsistent, gets injured a lot, and I don't even think he is the best QB on the team. I think that the Falcons would be a better team with Matt Schaub at quarter back because he runs the West Coast offense great. Off the field, do I even have to talk about Ron Mexico?

I would take Vick.

1. He fills the stadium.
2. Hes been in the playoffs twice. (LT once)
3. He is fun to watch.
4. He cant be "gameplaned out" Like a RB can.

JMHO

I've always been pretty critical of Vick, but I have to admit that he's won a lot of games with Atlanta. In the end, all that matters are wins and losses. Could they have won those games with Schaub? Maybe, I don't know. No one does.

But with LT doing what he does, and probably doing it for a long time to come, I don't think this was a bad move at all.

I remember Mort went around asking GMs after the Chargers-Falcons game last year, and a resounding majority said they'd still take Vick because of what he does for the financial aspect and what he does for the team.

As good as LT is, he has had two amazing years that didn't even get his team to the playoffs. Hell, one year, he did amazing, and they were the worst team in football. I don't think he can help your team enough to take him over Vick. It's quite an amazing accomplishment to sell out the Georgia Dome on a regular basis.

The Falcon's defense had a major part in Vick's success last year.
They had the same defense 2 years ago (when Vick broke his leg), yet were absolutely horrible. Then Vick comes back with the same defense, and they go to the NFC championship.

No doubt they played a part, but not a huge part.

In 2003 Atlanta's defense was ranked 32nd, or last in the league, in 2004 their defense was ranked 14th.

Yeah, that's just not a coincidence to me.

Soooooo, are you saying Vick improved their defense? Or could it be that Mora and Donatell were hired after the 2003 season? :hmmm:

In some wierd "he makes the team better" way, yes I am.

You don't keep the same personelle, and create that big of a turnaround, without one variable changing everything, and Vick was that variable.

Vick has won more playoff games than LT has played in.

Vick is like Vince in that a lot of times it won't be pretty but he gets the job done. All you need to do is pull up his win/loss record and compare it to other QBs his age (the guy's only 25) and realize that.

LT is hands down the best RB in the league. But no matter how good he is, the Chargers go as Drew Brees goes. Is it a coincidence they had their one good year with LT when Brees had 27 TDs to just 7 INTs?

All good points so far...

I'd still take LT, and then find him a good QB. I've got less concerns about LT working in almost ANY offense, rather than having to re-structure my offense around Vick.

They're both spectacular though......Win/Win.

I think that Schottenheimer is holding LT back. To be effective, LT needs to both run and catch the ball and there have been too many games where LT has 1 or no catches.

I'd like to see the win/loss record when LT is integrated into the passing game compared to when he is not.

He might not say it, but I will.

YES...VICK MADE THE DEFENSE BETTER.

How? you say...simply put, with Vick in the game, Atlanta's offense stayed on the field longer giving the defense time to rest. With Vick out, Atlanta's offense sucked, and their defense was on the field more. With the defense on the field more, they get tired, thus making them not as good.

In 2003, when Atlanta had the 32nd ranked defense, their offense's average time of possession was 27:38/game. In 2004, with the 14th ranked defense, their average TOP for the season was 29:10/game. I seriously doubt that extra 1:32 a game made their defense jump from being 32nd to 14th.

LT had a career high of 100 catches in '03.
San Diego finished 4-12 that year.

He's averaged 52 catches per year the past two years.
San Diego has gone 21-11 during that time.

the thing you need to look at, is when the falcons went to the nfc championship game under vick, the had the #1 rushing offense in the nfl....being able to ball control that effectively is what helped the defense stay more rested, and vick contributes heavily to their run game.
