[Lopez Blog on Chron.com] Scouts' Takes on Vince Young

I saw that yesterday, and #1, at least, was pure junk. If scouts are really thinking that's how the offense is at Texas, then we know they haven't seen any real amount of tape on Young. Which means his draft stock is actually going to go up between now and the end of April.

What are you talking about? Everytime I saw a Texas game this year all I saw was VYoung there standing straight up with an RB next to him from shotgun.

What am I talking about? Vince himself talked about going through his progressions. And while he is so quick about it that it almost looks intuitive, a person watching him can still see him go through mulitiple progressions. It's fast, but not invisible to the naked eye- he is still mortal, lol. Texas did not have a one-option-then-run plan. Mack Brown/Greg Davis may have looked like Dom Capers up until mid-2004, but not this season.

The only thing I could possibly think they are talking about are QB-run plays that are designed to look like pass plays. But if that's the case, John Lopez only knows stupid scouts who shouldn't have jobs in the NFL. I'd rather just think that they haven't seen much of VY yet.
 
Well I know that they probably have QB Draws up as actual plays but what I'm saying is that hes always in the shotgun and once he gets to the NFL and has to use other formations he won't be the quickest to learn them or to learn how to read the way the opposing Ds line up for them
 
The article sounded pretty reasonable and coincides with many of my opinions on Vince, and the couple scouts I have talked said basically the same thing about him.

NFL scouts get paid to make these observations on players, so I would trust these guys over the phantom scouts that are quoted on random ESPN news briefings and certainly more than the local media. I am sure if they are commenting on it that they've probably watched most of the game tapes on Vince, and since he isn't going to get a chance to prove himself in those areas before the draft since he won't be playing in any games, I don't see his draft stock rising, and I think as the hype of his Rose Bowl performance continues to wear off that his stock will drop if anything.

Good find on this article, it's good to finally see a local sports writer that isn't completely in love with Vince Young and is talking with actual pro scouts to find out a professional opinion on the matter.

John Lopez summarizes (makes crap up) from friend (make believe) scouts. The tuck and run comment is complete horse****. Texas' young recievers must be among the best in history if Vince Young's "first read" got open for 212 freaking completions, and 3000 yards. Lopez is a hack journalist who ?coincidently? is an Aggie.

Correction: he is the first local media member to not fantasize about Vince Young and the greatness he will supposedly immediately bring to the Texans so you think he doesn't know anything. I have personally talked to a few scouts too and this is the general consensus opinion among them on Vince Young. He may have overdone a couple points like the apparent frequency of Vince's tuck and run as you mentioned, but his account is much closer to being overall accurate than most of the nonsense that's been floating around the last two weeks.

I can see why you want it to go away but won't.

Look at McNabb coming out of college. ALL/MOST of the reporters on radio and tv were all about him going high in the draft. He went to Syracuse, most of your guys on radio and tv went to syracuse. College has some deep ties. Let's just hope that Kubes will not intentionally "not" draft VY cuz he went to a rival school. I'm sure it won't but it leaves my on standby.
 
The reason everybody says Lopez is crap ans that point #1 is wrong is becasuse he and the opinion are actually right.

But sadly I just heard that it is now a crime to speak ill of VY inside Hoston city limits.

UT, as much as I like them {Thanks for the brainwashing Dad (except when they play Tech)} runs the freakin' spread. The same gimmick offense that Tech and Michigan State and Purdue run. You know that illegimate love child of the run and shoot? THe only difference is that UT runs the option read for VY also. Sadly neither the spread not the option read will work in the NFL, no matter who you have at QB. Carl Lewis ain't even that fast.

Is VY a great a talent? Yes! Is he flawless? Hell NO! Wil lhe start this year or next? Doubtful.

let's just imagine we were talking about the Saint Louis Ramms, and a backup Quarterback KurtWarner to our Young stud Trent Green. Who do you think would have a harder time adjusting to the NFL??

People learn at different speeds. Vince has shown he is willing to do the work required to succeed. He's shown that he knows what it takes to win, and that he's willing to do it.

You're putting more hype into the RoseBowl game than any of Vince's fans. We've been watching him, and we know the RoseBowl, was just another game for Vince.
