Looking back....

I was just thinking what if instead of taking Carr #1 we took Peppers? I think it effects how we draft the rest of the years. If was take Peppers this is what I see happening the next 3 years in the 1st Round.

2002
1st overall Pick: Julis Peppes

2003
3rd over Pick: Trade Down for the Vikes 7th Pick and Onterio Smith. Then select Jordan Gross.

2004
10th overall Pick: Ben Roethlisberger
Trade up and get the 27st pick: Chris Gamble

2005 13th overall Pick: Derrick Johnson ILB Texas (we have Peppers we dont need TJ now.)

This was just a fun thing for me to do this is just my 2 cents! Bank would probably have sack record instead of Carr in this case! :hmmm:

yea but the only thing is that we wouldnt take a DE in the first round ever being an expansion team. and i beilove without having carr we wouldnt have the 10th overall pick we would still probably have 3rd and down. and u have to take into factor that without our big play makers carr/ AJ the team wouldnt be the same. but eh u never know what coulda happened if we did take peppers

so Peppers would be an OLB in our scheme?

We would have holes at WR, it wouldn't even be funny. Ben would look like Joey Harrington or Brees before Gates came into his life. Onterio Smith and Ben Roethlisberger would barely be able to move the ball. Onterio Smith only looks good becuase he plays behind the Vikings line.

If i had it my way, i would change the 2nd round selections. We would be fielding one heck of a team.

Javon Walker over Jabar Gaffney
Jason Witten over Bennie Joppru

The point is that first year Carr wouldnt be getting hammerd. Say it wasnt Carr the Top QB that year say it was Micheal Vick we would have lost are 1st Overall Pick, someone would have ended his career. I really dont think it is smart to take a QB in your 1st year as an expansion team but thank god Carr is tough! :thumbup

I think it is stupid not to take a qb if your a expansion team. #1 your going to be a losing team anyway (your not going to the superbowl anytime soon) so why not use those first years grooming your qb of the future. If you wasted those first 3 years like you are suggesting, we would just now be starting to groom the frachise qb and would still have to wait for him to overcome that long learning curve and probably would have another 3 years of sub par seasons to look forward to, which would get people ran out of town. Imagine what that would do to the morale of the vets on this team, after going through the struggles of a expansion team, now they have to look forward to the struggles of a rookie qb.We would be at the bottom of the Afc south and the jags would be years ahead of us, becuase they would already have a established qb under center. Also Big Ben went to a team that had excellent talent around him, he wouldn't of had that here. If you want to see what a expansion team that never established a franchise qb looks like, look at the Cleveland Browns (Granted they tried but failed, that was just bad drafting, there were some great qbs that came out of that draft). This would be like Charlie comming in and saying we have a 8 year plan with no direction the first 3, that would fly over like a fart in church.

All this is in Hindsight, I'm pretty sure when they drafted Carr they didn't say in the war room, Gee, poor guy, he's going to get blasted. I'm pretty sure setting the sack record was fartherest thing from their mind.

We dont have to have a young QB! I mean look at Warner Delhomme and then signing vets you can find a QB. Yes I realize Big Ben went to a good team and that Carr is lightyears better than him. Thats not the point I am saying we might shoulda built are line first (so that the poor boy doesnt get hurt) then when its decent Draft a QB. Just think about if we had come out in 2001 (or Vick goes back for his Senior Year) and we get him. He would get hurt and probably not be the same. Are D with Peppers would be 1,000 times better and I am not saying Carrs not good but think about that. 2001 Ravnes had Trent Dilfer NOT a franchise QB same with the Bucs in 2003. What if we had done this the next year get Adriana Peterson or something and have a great D and running game like the Ravens? NO WAY Jacksonville would have better way head of us! I am not saying this is what we should have done it just intersting to think about it.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. If you see what you beleive is franchise qb sitting in front of you, you take him and not worry about what comes down the line later. Also we did take the best vet available- Banks. Good vetern qbs aren't just sitting out there, if they were everybody would have one. If Carr is lightyears better than Ben as you say, (which I don't believe, Big Ben ain't too shabby) and we would of past on him and he went to the lions, cause they would of certainly snatched him up, he would of suffered only like 50 sacks so far in his career playing behind a great line and would be throwing the ball to excellent recievers on a offensive driven team, putting up excellent numbers. Then you would be saying "looking back" Why the Heck did we pass on Carr. Also Peppers is not a 3-4 lineman so he wouldn't of fit anyways. If we did make this move I can garrantee you both AJ and Dunta aren't on this team as well. Also yeah the jags would be years ahead of us

"Are D with Peppers would be 1,000 times better"

you really think that peppers would really make that much of an impact? well how bout this the draft stayed the same and everything turned out just like it is an we insert someone on our team i think it very much liek peppers and his name is peek. if u want an impact player wait till peek gets on the feild and recks. having just 1 superstar on our team "peppers" wouldnt make that much of an impact IMO im much happier with wat we have now than wat u poster that coulda been.

o and 1 more thing peppers is a DE in a 4-3 defense if im not mistaken i may be wrong so yah how would he really contribute? were u expecting to move him to an OLB?

Maybe he was expecting him to play both ways ?
And make him change positions from DE to OLB in our 3-4.

TE - Peppers
OLB - Peppers

hahahaha.........what a joke, even if that was possible, I still like the QB pick better.

OUR front office is a little slow sometimes, but, not that slow.

Peppers could play in any defense. And he could play well.

But no expansion franchise would take a DE first overall, they need a QB or a LT.

Who knows though?

tell that to the browns

I remember after the expansion draft, it was considered that the strength of the team would be the O line. More so in the second season after we got Ryan Young, but it never really panned out that way.

These exercises are sometimes fun to do, but because a player is good one place does not mean he will have equal success somewhere else.

On the Ryan Young, he was here a part of the expansion draft and busted out here. He was allowed to sign with the Cowobys after the first season because he had not stayed healthy with us and busted out in 2003 with them and is no longer in the league.
