London Game

alright one question- is that channing crowder interview fake? seriously if it isnt, that has to be the funniest interview ever. period.

btw- i know ye might be pissed that ye might lose a game but screw y'all if you think we dont deserve it. remember we're the ones that often stay up til 5 am on a monday morning to watch, despite being like zombies on mondays with only 3 hrs sleep max before college/work..

Have yall seen how pissed off Jerry Jones is at the idea of the league making all its teams play abroad? He is bent , he said there is no way the Cowboys will loose a home game. He doesnt want to loose his money to make the league better. It show why we here in SA do not have a team because it would take away from his fanbase and if the NFL goes global(like the NBA) then people in Europe might not buy as many Cowboys Jersies. Man .... Jerry are they gonna have to pry your last dollar out of your cold dead hand?

Tight wad. This is the NFL not the National teams who play the Cowboys league.

I saw that on Sportscenter. Then Wayne Huizenga said that Jerry has no choice if the league votes to do it.

its alright, it works itself out- sleep monday evening then wake up and watch TMF (tuesday morning football) :)
malloy's even worse.. hes another hr later than us even:gun:

Ahhh the joys of staying up untill 5am two days in a row, sometimes 3 If theres a college game I fancy watching on.

The one good thing about it is there is no hassle from the girlfriend for watching too much football as shes asleep at the time.

Here's the argument of why it is wrong to have a regular season game in London:

The Prelude Week 8-Goodell's International Folly

It's funny in parts.

Personally I don't like it. Preseason is fine however regular season is another story. I am not shy by admitting the Giants are my "other" team and as a fan of them I don't like the fact that they have go play outside an NFL venue.

Also, something no one else has mentioned is the fact that Britain has a lot of home grown Muslim extremist (Sideline, correct me if I am wrong there, however the media over here makes one believe that). In this situation they don't have to go very far to try to make a statement against the US. I am sure the stadium will be real secure however I hope security is real tight around the players and where they are staying.

channing crowder tell you that?

What do Muslim extremists have to do with anything? I'm sure there are more murders in New Orleans than in London, and that isn't stopping the NFL from playing games there.

If you listen to the Government we are at "war" currently. It's not like we aren't occupying a sovereign Nation ridding the world of their weapons of mass destruction that doesn't exist....I'm sure there is a bit of resentment in Europe. I hope a rocket launcher doesn't find the team plane myself.

i like the idea. just makes sense, business-wise.

Is it smart business to alienate the customers that make your business? You can have exhibition games across the pond to make an extra buck off of merchandise, but taking your business away from the people who make it, doesn't seem very business-wise to me.

I don't think you're going to get the same globalization of American football as say, basketball. At least not if you just play a regular season game or 2 overseas once a year. Basketball takes around the globe because other countries have pro basketball leagues. People around the world play basketball, not the case for American football and I really don't see that happening when soccer is so big and much easier to play, as is basketball. Football is big here because it's OUR game. It's huge at the pro level, it's huge at the college level, it's huge at the high school level, and it's even pretty big below the high school level, pee-wee, Pop Warner and such.

If the NFL wants to expand their product, maybe they should help get an overseas professional league started, using people from whatever country they do it in, instead of using 4th string American players that not even I would watch, to help build the interest up in the game much like the MLS is trying to do here for soccer.

I think that would be much better business-wise, than them taking our game away from us.

come on man, thats ridiculous.. they survive at the tokyo bowl right and america isnt exactly popular over there

Last time I checked, Tokyo wasn't in Europe and didn't have a base of Muslim fanatics....whom we are supposedly at war with. I don't feel too much American hatred from Japan myself. Europe is a different story.

Ridiculous is right. London is a very safe city with some of the best anti-terror intelligence in the world. There weren't any issues at the Athens Olympics either, which is even closer to all of the Muslim extremists who hate the US.

I agree. Taking games away from those who have supported these teams for eons is an egregious idea. If more money is what Goodell wants - then he needs to go to a Plan B cuz Plan A is going to cause a whole bunch of fan anger which will cost money.

I'm with "The Mummy" on this one. Playing a game abroad does not make the league better. Exporting the NFL game to Europe, Canada, or Mexico does not make the league better. It makes it bigger and maybe, if it works the way they expect it to then it might make the owners richer because we all know that they "need" more money right?

If I owned an NFL team I'd be right beside Jerry Jones on this one.

what harm does exporting a miniscule number of games do?
look at the possible benefits: NFL becomes more popular worldwide, more young kids follow and play it, you end up with bigger revenues, bigger fanbases and a bigger pool of talent to pick from (top international kids) meaning the standard of the game will improve... tell me again how that doesnt make the game better??

(granted thats is an optimistic outlook on this.. but the benefits very much outweigh the possible harm)

I think San Antonio's biggest problem with landing a NFL team is not only the cowboys, but you are less than 200 miles from Houston. Another problem with SA having a team...can you compete with the Texas Longhorns for fan support. I think if San Antonio had a team and they got off to a slow start like the Texans have, do you have the people in SA that will still come to the games? I really think San Antonio is big enough to support the spurs, but to support a NFL team even thru the hard times, i'm just not sure san antonio could do it for the long haul.

Agreed. It is basically saying money is worth more than your fans.

There's plenty of communities in the United States that would like an NFL team, but screw them, let's spread football to places where it's a curiousity.

And at least one fan base a year will get screwed out of a home game. And probably both teams involved will have a post-outta country let down. There are probably few things as distracting as playing an out of country game. Can you imagine how sore you would get playing an all out game, and then having to get into a airplane seat for 8 hours? And they have to hope they have no medical events that occur over the Atlantic.

Maybe I'm "odd" but I don't feel any kind of "need" to see the NFL expand further. 32 teams is a lot of teams. Teams playing in Toronto (They've got the CFL in Canada) and Mexico City (If they want an American football league they can create one of their own) don't interest me. Teams giving up a home game to go play in Europe where this sport is never going to truly take off seems like a waste of effort to me. As for the NFL expanding to cities in other countries I say "Isn't this the "NATIONAL" football league? Don't we already have 5-6 teams in any given season making do with really lousy quarterbacking or no running backs to speak of (looking at you guys Green and Dayne)? Why would we want 36 teams or 40 teams and diminish the level of play even further? Don't we already have college football for that? Why move it to Mexico and Canada and start paying them to play? Can't we just do that with Oklahoma and USC?

Now I know what you're going to say, "What makes you think that the NFL will never take off in Europe?" and here's my response. Look at baseball or basketball which have both made a huge impact overseas. Look at the people playing the sport. In baseball they're normal size guys (no, don't look at Barroid Bonds) and what do you need to play baseball? A stick and a ball. Gloves help but it's not like it's an equipment intensive sport. Now look at basketball. Every country has some tall guys and all you need is a ball and a basket.

Now look at the most popular sport on the planet. Soccer only needs a ball and if you can walk you can play soccer badly.

Now look at American football. Look at the guys playing this sport. Look at the size and athletic ability of the people playing on the lines. Yes every country has big muscular guys but as we learn every year being big and muscular doesn't make you a LT. Look at the equipment needed to play this game just "moderately dangerously" (forget about safely, that's an illusion). Sure you can play the game without all that equipment and with ordinary size athletic guys. That's called "Rugby" and guess what? Most of the world already has that.

They don't need American football, they don't particularly seem to want American football, and they would take forever starting today with moderate to intense exposure to the American game to get even remotely up to speed at it on a high school level much less in anything more advanced than that.

I don't think the NFL translates to the rest of the world like MLB or NBA does. I don't think it ever will. I think that an occasional game overseas is a thing of interest but any sort of regular exposure is going to be like putting a team in Jacksonville. Sure they're going to be fired up at first but eventually those tarps are going to come out and people are going to start talking about moving those games to Los Angeles.

Most of all, and this is just me. I don't want to see American football played all over the world. Not as an export like McDonald's or Coca Cola. They can catch it on television if they're so inclined and if they want to start playing it then fine, start playing it. Just leave my sport alone. I won't start asking for the UK to bring Cricket matches over here or for Japan to export Sumo if they'll leave my NFL schedule alone.

Maybe I'm just the grumpy old man who doesn't like change but I don't like the idea of the NFL getting bigger. Enough is enough. they make billions of dollars every year. Why do they need more? Why do they need to expand? Why can't they be happy with the ridiculous money and attention they already get. Must they hold Rome hostage and make them renovate "their" Coliseum?

except the business is so strong that you're alienating no one. they're trying to build the sport internationally. they can sacrifice a few bucks states-side if necessary to gain any sort of fanbase overseas. they're looking towards the future, and one regular season game overseas isn't going to lose any fans over here.

first of all, i dont know many that want to see overseas team (or 36 teams etc) and i dont think it will ever happen.. im just talking about taking a couple games overseas as a reward to nfl fans outside of america... it doesnt need to 'truly take off' as long as its popularity steadily continues to grow and the stadiums continue to sell out (and considering wembley could've still been filled at least 6 times over eventhough a 0-7 team is involved would indicate it will)

and the 2nd part of your paragraph only reinforces what i was saying about the need for more quality players in the league- some of which could come from abroad

dont watch much rugby right.. there are excellent athletes in international rugby.. how many nfl players can run into each other for 80 minutes with 1 break and no pads/protection (now thats dangerous).. now what if some young players in the future decided to try play nfl instead of rugby thanks to the increased exposure of the sport through the international games?

They don't need American football, they don't particularly seem to want American football, and they would take forever starting today with moderate to intense exposure to the American game to get even remotely up to speed at it on a high school level much less in anything more advanced than that.

what will we do thats so horrible to your sport.. i wonder where that insular american stereotype comes from eh? those 3 paragraphs are all your personal opinion which many including the commish and most owners must disagree with.. just remember we weren't asking for the game- that was the nfl's decision based on the support they saw

:fans:

Look dude I don't really care if you want a few NFL games to be played overseas and I don't care if the sport gets any bigger or more popular than it already is. I think I spelled that out in the one paragraph that you conveniently forgot to quote.

They'll do it, games will be played overseas, and the NFL will expand it's fanbase. They'll start playing random Super Bowls in other countries too and I'm against that also. What does it matter if I don't like the idea and that I'm not in favor of it? Nothing I do or say will impact their decision to take home games away from the teams fans and put them on television. Hell the NFL already has priced most of the best seats out of the range of the common fan (Love that money!) so the fans should just be happy we put it on free TV for them (until we decide to put it on pay per view (Love that money!). Then they can price the broadcast out of some fans budget too.

Re-read my above quoted paragraph again because that's how I'll end this post too., Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man who doesn't like change.

yes, you certainly are.

as for the prices being out of the common fan's range, well, isn't just about every game sold out these days? it'd be hard to use that argument in court when the NFL could just point to the weekly sellouts, and that's with extremely high TV ratings as well.

i just don't see the issue with the NFL wanting more fans. all you've said this entire time was that the NFL needs to focus on the fans, well, what about getting MORE fans? they put a franchise in Houston so they can have MORE fans. they're not playing a game in London for a quick buck, they're doing it to get MORE fans.

For the record I said that the prices for the best seats were out of the common fans range. I didn't say you couldn't get in the stadium. With high TV ratings and sellout games almost everywhere as the NFL does things as they've always done them I don't see what's not working with the status quo.

I just don't see the need for it and probably never will.

Great atmosphere at the game so far. Dolphins have a huge london following....lotta limeys vacation in florida - it's close and disneyworld is there

Is the game on in Houston? I am watching it on Sunday Ticket. They are showing the Bears/Lions game here.

Good observation Vinny, my cousin lives in Florida and she married a Brit. Although they are Jax Jaguars fans but still I think you're onto something there.

Wonder why. NYC is by far the largest destination for Londoners.
donno...all I know is that I've kept up with various teams mb's and fan bases over the years and the Dolphins have a really large Brit base.

Game is on FOX in Houston....pretty good atmosphere.

True, but its got to be more than that because more Brits visit NYC than any other city in the US.
sure...but I was just making a general statement...I wasn't trying to define every single reason why the Fins have a large Brit contingent...I've just noticed it was a bigger following than other teams and I threw out a couple of reasons.

Oh I know....just curious as to the reasons thats all. Wonder who has the largest following.

The rain is killing the passing game. Don't you know Goodall is having fits. He had to want a wide open scoring extravaganza, to show the brits that our football is more exciting to watch than their football.:gun:
