Landon Collins, S, Alabama

Now that Swearinger is on the trade block does that mean Landon Collins, S, Alabama is a legit consideration at 16? I know a lot of people here don't like him. People criticize his coverage ability. I think he was better this year and most of that was carried over from last year and continues by people that haven't really watched him much this year. He is an upgrade over Swearinger in every way IMO. Better tackler, better coverage, quicker to the ball, better open field tackler and better pass rusher.

OK, I agree. Does that mean that the Texans should replace DJ with an improved in the box safety with a 1st round pick? I just don't like the value there.

I'm part of that group that don't like him at #16 and criticize his coverage ability. I do agree that he'd be an upgrade from Swag, but I think there will be better players available at #16. If he's there in the 2nd round I'd take him, but that's not likely.

exaggerated. He's better in coverage than he's given credit for. Still I tend to agree. Maybe we could trade down? I would love to have 3 picks in the top 80 or so.

I'm thinking that if the Texans were so concerned with replacing Swearinger, maybe they should have made a more concerted effort to do so in free agency. Rather than looking for one in a weak safety class.

My thoughts on Collins about a month ago when it started to look like the puzzle was shaping up to fit a piece just like him.

Fair enough. I'd like to add a very sure tackler who attacks the LOS aggressively and can pursue instinctively at good angles. He plays in space far better than he's given credit for and should look to be a serious nuisance to the intermediate part of the field and sideline-to-sideline for opposing qb's. This especially with the addition of R. Moore to move at range behind him. I really like the levels it would bring our defense with our LB's looking cleaner behind Wilfork & Watt, and a mobile/talented SS in Collins playing in between those LB's and a veteran cover unit of KJ/JJo/& Moore.

There are other guys I'd get more excited about at 16, but I still believe he'd be a sneaky good asset.

Collins only appeared to get better in coverage because Nick Perry (missed all last year with injury) came back this year and took a lot of the coverage responsibility in the deep half. Collins didn't get better at it. Saban just asked him to do less.

He's pretty much better than Swearinger in every measurable way, but he also has the same weakness in coverage. I think there are other guys later in the draft who can come in and upgrade the position that are better in space. Are they the pure athlete that Collins is? No. Will they be as ferocious coming up and attacking the LOS? No. But they are more well rounded.

Long story short, he would upgrade the position. But the value is better to replace Swearinger later in the draft.

Agree. If you have a Safety who cannot cover it hamstrings any attempts at disguising coverages. Wade didn't care about that, RAC does.

Cody Prewitt brings more to the table and is slipping in rankings for no apparent reason.

I love Prewitt. And I'm always skeptical of guys like this who slide in the internet rankings for no reason.

All American as a JR. No real drop off in production as a SR, just less flashy plays. Tape is rock solid. Hard worker with no character concerns and no injury history. So the only possible question should be how he tests.

Tested well at the combine. His numbers didn't jump off the wall but he was in the top half of nearly every event. Tested better overall than Landon Collins did. Had a great pro day. Improved every single test and also did well in the drills.

Basically, I've come to the conclusion that he is just all substance and no flash. So he drops in the rankings because his name hasn't been on the TV screen since the season ended. Then he'll get drafted in the first two rounds and people will scream "reach" even though that's where he should have been ranked the whole time.

Collins reminds me of Polamalu, which may sound like high praise (and it is in a sense), but he's also not ideally built for today's NFL. His weaknesses are bad weaknesses to have. Don't forget, the Steelers had been trying to dump Polamalu for years because his style of play was no longer a positive for their defense. You have to be able to cover people to play Safety in today's NFL.
