L.J. Shelton

Shelton was a good player. I think he fell out of favor over in Arizona recently. I am not sure what the problem was. I am not a huge follower of the Cards. Maybe someone else will know. I think they had moved him to RT, but I am almost positive that he played quite a bit of LT. To me, he would be better than Wand. I don't know what his agent is looking for, but I think he would be a clear upgrade, and would easily start over Wand. He could also swing to RT if needed due to injury. I see no reason why we wouldn't at least pick up the phone and see what it takes.

He is a good player he is 29 years old, so I think he will only get worse from here. He is definately a quality player though and I think he could definately be an improvement for our team. Once I saw that he was released I was thinking...would we be interested. I really think it would be a good pick up. I don't think he will want that much money so why not go after him?

Shelton was the Cards' starting LT until the position was taken from him by Leonard Davis...From what I've gathered about him, he is a very talented player with a lot of experience, but he is a classic underachiever, and he never got along with Dennis Green...I've been searching, and I haven't found any character issues with him...With every free agent, you have to ask yourself, "Is he better than who we have on the roster now", and I think he'd be an upgrade over Riley, but I'm not sure if he could take the starting LT job from Wand...If he comes cheap, I say do it, but he'll likely demand more than we're willing to spend...

right now we could use anybody to help bring in competition to the left tackle position...whether it's shelton, wand, or riley

Isnt Leonard Davis a Left Guard?

I think we should have waited on riley, at this point i dont see us making a move but it would be nice. more depth is always good.

I see shelton signing with buffalo now.

Buffalo would probably have to release Travis Henry to do that. I think they are only 1 million under the cap. idonno:

Went to the Cards boards yesterday to find out some info on Shelton. Not to many people upset about his release. Some people would have preferred to keep him as a backup. Mostly people ragged him pretty hard over there. Said he was a crybaby, fell out of favor with Green, etc.. Anyway considering that he was the other party involved in the Travis Henry trade with Buffalo, there is alot of smack going on between Buffalo fans and Arizona fans over there.

You mean Arizona has fans? idonno:

Alot of Buffalo fans are saying that now all they have to do is sign Shelton and they still have Henry as trade bait in other areas. Cards fans are saying they don't want Henry because they drafted Arrington.

I don't care what the fans in Arizona are saying.

L.J. Shelton is better than Seth Wand.

Period.

Riley is a cancer, Casserly should swallow his pride, admit that Riley was a stupid move, release him and sign Shelton.

Shelton would be an upgrade, he's big, good wingspan, decent feet. And if a couple fans in Arizona called him a crybaby, I think that's way better than what all the Saints fans are saying about Riley.

And this talk about us getting Rice, that's got to stop.

I say release Victor Riley, sign Shelton. We should have waited until atleast the June 1st cuts instead of getting anxious and going out and getting a 'cancer'.

I hope Riley turns out better than the last Saint reject, linebacker Clemons. Shelton would be a great pick-up if for nothing but depth as long as it won't affect the salary cap adversely.

One part of the article did not add up.
Signability could be an issue between the Texans and Shelton, who was due a base salary of $3 million in each of the next four years and will command a lot of interest
I thought the Texans were in a position to sign O Pace not too long ago. So why would we be out of the running on this one?

BTW I would take Shelton over Wand right now. I sure hope the next draft will net the Texans a franchise LT, because we are not getting one any other way.

article is about the same as what we have heard the last few years.. Capers talking about getting the 5 best players on the field. The switching of players around the line (in the article Wand played LG in times) is nothing new to me.. What it tells me is that Capers wants to know if the time came we could put Wand over at guard if Pitts was injured..and if he'd be an upgrade over say Milford Brown or fred Weary or whoever.

I am not reading much in to it.. because we looking at anyone that can help the team whether starting wise or depth wise..if the edge got released..I am sure we'd look at him .. if Javon Walker got released..we'd look at him

IMO if we need anything it is a Center..Sacks would be avoided if Carr could actually step up into the pocket instead of bouncing back and around tackles. I am not saying the tackles aren't giving up sacks.. but with quicker reads by Carr and a pocket to actually throw from would do wonders

we need good tackles...shelton could probably come in and start at LT for us...giving us a starting line up like this:

shelton pitts mckinney wiegert wade

backups

wand washington hodgden weary riley

i don't think he'll be dropped if we sign shelton...riley is bound to be better than the udfa tackles we signed and is better than gerrick jones...he would be a safty net as one of the back-ups...if we do sign shelton he will be our starting LT

I don't think Riley gets cut unless he doesn't get into shape by training camp. If he comes into camp fat, he'll be looking for another job.

Could be a decent pick-up, and would provide immediate competition at the LT spot - TC would prove who is the better player.

Riley hasnt done much except put is putting some ire in some folks because he's arguementative. He's got to do better if he wants even a back up spot or will be a june 1st cut IMO.

Honestly more in-fighting goes on than folks think. This is a competitive sport and trash talking is just as big a part of it and that leads to people losing tempers and getting in scraps. With alot more jobs on the line this year I expect a lot more of this until a leader or 3 steps up in the locker room, huddle or on the field with a play that commands the guys attention.

Honestly I would sign him today just for depth if he checked out in medical.

The chronicle article seemed to imply that Capers at least recognized they "werent happy" with the way the line played last year. But if thats true Ummm I have a question Coach - How come Charlie & co havent signed anyone thru FA to shore up the much needed O-line problems we have???
IMO just havent seen too much :fishing: on the Texans part since FA started. We cleared a lot of cap space - but havent really signed anyone for the biggest need on the team. Granted it's been a pretty dry market, but there were a couple of decent "Starting Quality" guys early on in FA that would have been a little financial strain to get, but the Texans had the money to sign if they wanted to. Yet they choose to wait until now to start looking at LT talent?

Bottom line - I dont expect the team to sign Shelton or anyone until after the June 1st cuts to see what else hops up on the market. IF nothing better comes up - I expect them to make Shelton a tender offer for a veteran player with a min bonus up front and backloaded with playing incentives.
