Gary Kubiak will get off to a blazing start as Texans coach if he is able to hire Broncos offensive line coach Rick Dennison as his offensive coordinator/offensive line coach and Buccaneers defensive line coach Rod Marinelli as his defensive coordinator.
Kubiak and Dennison are close friends, but like all Denver assistants, Dennison is under contract. There is no reason for coach Mike Shanahan to let him out of his contract unless he just wants to be a good guy and allow Dennison to leave for a promotion.
Marinelli has been with the Bucs since 1996 the same season Tony Dungy was hired as head coach and Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator. Marinelli, who interviewed for the Lions' head-coaching job and will interview with the Raiders, is regarded as the premier defensive line coach in the NFL.

I like marnelli pretty well, but I think id rather see Gray, or Jim Bates if trys to leave Green Bay. He was pretty upset he didnt get there HC job.

I just dont think Capers would come be the DC.. that would just be...ackward. I mean.. he was running the whole show last season.. now he has to defer to our new HC.

well it seems everyone on the board claims the same thing. great coordinator, horrible head coach. i dont think anyone questions his knowledge or leadership.Runner said:

With regards to Capers being our DC: I wouldn't scream out loud against it. It's not a common thing, but think of Gunther Cunningham getting re-hired as the Chiefs DC after being their HC for a couple of years. So it's not completely undheard of.
Although, I'd like to see new blood introduced to the team.

A key to turning the team around will be hiring Marinelli as our DC. He comes from the Monte Kiffin Defensive Cordinator Tree, sort of like the Bill Walsh tree. If you look at the desendents from this tree you will find that some of the best Ds use it. The Bears Bucs and Colts are some of the teams that use it and in case you don't know they all had good season and were in the playoffs. Hiring him will force a 4-3 D and we will win games again

i dont smoke at all actually. capers is a great defensive coordinator who didnt want to let fangio go. probably one of his downfalls is his faith in other coaches.bigjohn said:

This guy has been building stong defenses with little talent in Green Bay and previously in Miami. He looks like a 4-3 guru and a great pick up. Not everyday you can find an established successful DC.

so it seems with Kubiak we are getting the whole offensive package with Dennison as the OC
so the question now is the DC.... i also agree that we will have some issues finding one the farther Denver advances.
Capers as our DC, i mean if he accepted it would be a great move if he could swallow the pride. i think the players would play hard for him and maybe he could make the defense pop. But its not going to happen, the only way is if every top guy is taken cause Denver goes to the Superbowl and he is literally the only person left and it would be on a super short term basis maybe a year.

Capers as DC is easily one of the craziest ideas I have ever seen on this board. Maybe in a couple of years we could entertain the notion from a football perspective. But from a Front Office/Coaching perspective it would have been like President Bush in 2000 retaining Clinton's services as Secretary of State. On the field chemistry only trumps operations chemistry for the day to day health of the team, in my opinion.

I'm really not fond of a 4-3 defense cover 2 or not. Look what happened to the Colts defense Sunday it leaves holes in the middle and the way our team tackled last year is just a time bomb ticking away every game. I believe the better defense is the 3-4, look at how the Steelers did the Colts. The reason the players and most of the people want to switch defenses is because it hasn't been run the way it should be. I dont know what the **** Fangio was thinking when he was trying to pull the cover 2 3-4 crap. Remember at the end of the year when we were starting to get pressure on the QB we were being aggressive even Dunta said it we let the pass rusher's loose. I wouldn't be completely against bringing Capers as DC or someone with some 3-4 experience like the way the Steelers play. That would be nice.

what is there to show that the players dont respect capers? you are way off base on that idea. capers might have been a disaster (debatable), but he was the HC, not a DC.
and defensive coordinators dont just write on clipboard - that job is for the backup qb. and yes it would probably be awkward, but this is about capers so nobody knows how he would approach this kind of situation. at this point he is one of the better canidates out there right now, regardless of his work experience

AP reports Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray believes he will not be with the team for the 2006 season. He was recently informed that he is no longer being considered to fill the team's head coaching vacancy. The Bills also gave him permission to seek jobs elsewhere in the NFL, which is another reason he does not believe he will be with the team. Gray said, "If you're a defensive coordinator and they want you, they're not going to give you permission to go somewhere else. ... So I'm pretty sure that means they're letting you go be a D coordinator elsewhere because they've got other plans here."

Once kubiak is officially hired the rest of the positions will be filled asap. I would not mind seeing the UT defensive cord. given a shot at the pros. He has not lost a game in two seasons going undefeated at auburn in 2004 and ut this year.
