Kubiak's Next Destination

Fair enough. I guess I'm just nitpicking.

It's just I think the motivation for firing a HC with excellent results like Fox should be considered. Fox was letting Manning be Manning and trying to add a D. And they had a damn good D. And then couldn't quite close the deal even with 55 TD Manning.

Elway credits Kubiak for teaching him to rely on the team and the offense...and hoisting two Lombardis in the twilight of his career when he knew he was not playing as well. That's exactly what he wanted Kubiak to do for Manning. And it worked.

Actually, there are very few coaches who could have managed the QB situation as well as he did... He was able to bench Peyton when needed, then bring him back at the proper time and keep all the gossip, rumors, etc... from creating a rift with the team. I am impressed! The offense certainly sputtered. However, he did get Peyton and company on board with a very conservative style of offense just in time for their successful playoff run.

Was he the masterful architect of this championship team? No. However, he steered the ship and put the team inposition to win.... And they did.

Well, Peyton did get hurt so Kubiak really didn't have much of a choice. But to give Kubiak his due, he went back to Peyton when it became obvious that Oseweiler was in over his head.

Part of my criticism of Gary was that he was too tense here in Houston. Towards the end he always had that upset stomach face. And I thought his team's reflected that with their play in big games and in tight spots. I even said that the game kubiak collapsed was because of Case.

I don't disagree with your premise about his stress level; hell, he had a mini stroke. But why would that game have him stressed over Case? As of the time that Kubiak had his stroke, Case had thrown three TDs, no INTs, and the Texans were beating the pants off the Colts, IIRC. Seems like of all the times he should have been stressed about Case, that would have been at the bottom of the list.

On a side note, how the hell is Tom Flores not in the Hall of Fame, given what other coaches have been inducted?

He was stressed out about having to start Case at all according to what I read.

Now, this is me reading between the lines....Based on him continuing to pull Case in lieu of Schaub, I think it's safe to say that he did not trust Case...Even in the midst of a full blown Schaub breakdown.

And I said it at the time that I think that the way Case was throwing the ball deep and playing with all that excitement probably too much for him.

I don't know if you've ever had real bad anxiety, but I have, and too much excitement can sometimes be worse....

Especially if it's one of those, 'OH NO!!!!'....'OH, ****, THAT WORKED' moments....

I don't think it was the stress of that day so much as the long grinding 2 win start being followed by week after week of losses, many agonizingly close - just watching the season, somewhat inexplicably, slide away. Working harder and harder each week and coming up short.

Some people just look at 2-14 as if that tells the whole picture. It doesn't. That team went toe to toe with the eventual SB champion. Had to be maddening.

Really good article, man. Thanks for posting it.

The fact of the matter is that Kubiak is not the same coach with the Broncos that he was with the Texans. He's clearly learned a lot, both as a head coach here for 8 seasons, and then as an OC under John Harbaugh. And I'm sure there is a completely different dynamic with him and Elway that came into play this season. I saw an interview with both of them before the SB, and they have been good friends since they were roommates their rookie seasons. Elway even stated that he kept Kubiak in check with regards to how stressed he'd get and made sure that Kubiak did not have too much on his plate. That mid-game stroke taught him a lot, as well. And hearing his players talk about him all season, they'd go through a wall for their coach.

I'm glad for Kubiak and Wade. It's a really amazing story overall, both with their histories in Denver and the way they managed Peyton's obvious physical decline. Wade has finally been validated and I'm sure Bum is with him in spirit. And what a coach! To go back to a team as a coordinator that you used to be a head coach for is a model in being humble.

Regardless of where they won it all, they are still Houston boys at heart. Major props to both of them. :thumbup

"Won in spite of the HC" could those of you who made that comment expound a little? I find that offensive in a wierd way. Koobs did a marvelous job in Denver this year.
