This guy may be a great choice for us.

#1 Hes coming from a college team, which will give him a bit more insight into the college players right now, and help us to make some good draft choices. Especially when it comes to Olinemen.

#2 Hes an Oline freak. He WILL have a strong Oline on this team as fast as possible.

#3 He worked under Bill Belichick in Cleveland. Bill wasnt too impressive there.. but alot of people maintain that it wasnt his fault.. that he was in a real bad situation there. So, Ferentz didnt win a championship with him (which is important, if you read my "food for thought" post).. but he DID work under Belichick.. which is a pretty good recommendation these days.

#4 As much as I want to bring in a proven commodity.. there is something to be said about bringing in "the new guy". Look at some of the great coaches of the past.. they all got their first break somewhere, and stayed there for years and years.. keeping the team in contention.


There are SOME negatives though.

#1 Virginia isnt exactly an earth shatteringly good football team. Put them in a game with USC and you can probably expect a blowout.

#2 He IS unproven as a head coach on the professional level. We may end up putting ourselves even farther behind by getting him.

#3 We have a young team.. and bringing in a young and "inexperienced" coach may not give them the boost of confidence they need.




All in all.. I think that this guy should be at the top of our list.. along with Kubiak and Pete Carroll and Wade Phillips.
 
Just to clarify...Ferentz is head coach at Iowa, not Virginia.

Also I wouldn't really worry about the player confidence thing. I mean all these guys played in college under college coaches at some point, and they also know that the "NFL HC experience" doesn't always mean squat.

ugh... thats the second time ive done that. For some reason my brain keeps telling me he coaches in Virginia.


Pete Carrol did sign the extension.. but supposedly that doesnt mean that a suitably ridiculous offer couldnt convince him to go pro. Least thats what ive seen.
 
I'm not sure I would want Carroll even if he was willing. He's done a great job at USC but he's also had an incredible amount of talent come through there. Not to take away from USC's success but I don't think USC and the 2-14 Texans relate very well.
 
Don't forget about Carroll's NFL experience. 6-10 in New York in 94; 10-6, 9-7, 8-8 in New England from 97-99. Talent at the college level doesn't automatically mean winning big in the NFL.

What was Bill Belichick's record before New England? Here you go:

1991 Cleveland 6-10
1992 Cleveland 7-9
1993 Cleveland 7-9
1994 Cleveland 11-5
1995 Cleveland 5-11

36-44. I think he got it right the second time around.

He even started 5-11 his first year in New England. After five years with Cleveland and his first year in New England, it would have been easy to write Belichick off. I bet Patriot fans are glad they didn't...

I am NOT saying Pete Carroll would have the same success as Bill Belichick. I am saying you can't just look at his record and say he will not be successful with a second chance.
 
In case some of you listen to Charlie Palillo on 790AM, if you want to make his day, call him up and ask him what he thinks of Kirk Farentz. He'll yack for a half an hour straight.

Thinks Farentz is absolute genious in the development of offensive lines. Many offensive linemen that were taken high in the draft (Robert Gallery) were tutored by Farentz. His own son, Brian Farentz is an offensive linemen that will be graduating this year.

And I would be surprised if Palillo isn't bending McNair's ear on Farentz.

Many people have mentioned that his son is graduating, and I want to make sure I've read correctly somewhere that his son is graduating from High School, not college. Of course this would allow his family to move without his son changing schools.
