It's insider content so I can't post it verbatim but Mel didn't give anyone an A. The Ravens, Niners and Texans got B+.

Basically, he says we addressed needs and he respects Mario even if it wasn't the right move to make. :redtowel:

Houston Texans: GRADE: B+

I would have taken Reggie Bush with the first overall pick. But I have to respect the pick of Mario Williams, especially if he's consistent from game to game. DeMeco Ryans at linebacker was a solid second-round pick, while Charles Spencer and Eric Winston will help out the offensive line. With tight end Owen Daniels and RB Wali Lundy, Houston did a very good job of sizing up the board.

Awesome! I think we did a hell of a job this weekend. Beats all 4 of Capers drafts combined.

agree 100%. it's a good thing fans don't draft, who knows what we'd have got. glad people who actually know what they're talking about gave us a good grade.

Giving out or getting grades always seemed superfluous fluff the real grades are the ones earned in life or in this case on the field. But in this forum grades apply & are fun, at least this year, to hand out so with that in mind here is my opinion one week later regarding the Texans 2006 draft :tease:

1. Mario Williams 4/5. Texans get the most dynamic defensive player since Peppers, albiet a need addressed somewhat through free agency this should provide the Texans with a solid defensive base with the possiblity that as Mario develops into a dynamic playmaker they envision he will be fluid all across the line causing match-up situations that constantly favor the Texans. If this comes to pass, which I believe it will, Mario will be an outstanding pick indeed, I just can't give it to him yet he has to earn it. From a cap structure base it will also be easier to resign him & justify his expense @ the DE position rather than @ RB down the road.

2. DeMeco Ryans 5/5. I really thought all the bluechip LB'ers would be gone. as a matter of fact I also forgot about him (just assumed he would be gone to N.E. or somewhere) so it was with total surprise he was still there for the Texans in the second. What DeMeco brings is intelligence and leadership to the LB position. He is destined to be the leader of our defense (something we've missed with Sharper & Glenn both gone last year) now I'm not sure from what exact position that will be (could be either inside or out) but I have a feeling it will be some type of rover/nickle package look. Texans fans are going to enjoy his aggressive, heads up style & the defense will no longer be exhausted/spent on successive 3rd down conversions.

3. Spencer/Winston 5/5. What a sign of hope and huge shot in the offensive line arm. Both could wind up starting by the end of the year and now the Texans have some talent & depth to give Carr relief. I guess all good things do come to those who wait, I love both picks and they improve the Texans starting now.

4. Owens 4/5 will impact special teams and roster decisions but given time and his proclivity to understand /implement Kubiacs playbook will earn him some pt while Putzier is resting/out. Can be more of a gamebreaking redzone target who can also help in blocking schemes both at the line & downfield. A great pick for Kubiacs system, while other teams gobbled up higher rated talent Gary drafted someone who fit his style.

5. Eric Moulds 5/5 we already know what he can do and Andre finally has a worthy running mate, for a 5th rd. selection this is a great pick-up. Anyone else rather take a chance on Marques Hagans or Jeremy Bloom?

6. Wali Lundy 5/5 where are you gonna find a powerback with good vision & cutback ability with a knack for scoring? at least 4th rd. no less yet here is Wali Mr. "TD" in the 6th rd. This is an ideal situation for him to develop & thrive in, you know at some point especially on short yardage situations he is going to get some carries. Also adds quality & depth to the position for the Texans and sustains the idea you don't need to spend high picks in this area to get productive, impact players.

7. David Anderson 4/5 almost Mr. irrevellent but still many feel he actually has a chance to make the team. He appears to be mostly a special teams kinda guy who can also return kicks if needed as well be a gunner. He has good hands, runs well after the catch and is very aggressive in his blocking assignments. Not convinced he will make the team but seems like a great kid, the type that Kubiac likes to keep.

So overall thats 32/35 = A- easily the best draft in Texans history! great job to the entire Texans organization on a job well done :poker:

I think we did a great job, even though I think we could have picked up some steals with Youboty in the 3rd and Simpson in the 4th, but if Kubiak is happy with our secondary then so am I.

sometimes you just have a gut feeling about something and this just doesnt feel like it was a well conceived decision with the #1 overall pick. it felt thrown together, last minute and a total panic by McNair/Kubes/Cass.

oh another quick poll. would you rather beat colts or cowboys this year? i say without pause Colts, but i dont have the Houston Inferiority Complex that most Houstonians have towards Dallas....I want to punish Peyton this year :)

Dallas is just the big brother that never gives us any respect. It's fun to rub their faces in the fact that they lost to an expansion team. It'd be double nice to have a winning streak against them.

My vote, beat both.

I personally don't agree with that. I don't think it was a panic session.. Especially with the timeframe we had to pick (i.e. Kubiak was hired weeks in advance and Reeves was in to consult).. I think we played a poker hand and tried to get someone to bite on a trade down .. the Drew Brees deal came for N.O. and helped them out tremendously and took our bargaining power away. Basically with that it meant that if we traded down , Mario Williams was a given to be a Saint being Qb wasn't a need and RB wasn't a need.. Jets wouldn't give N.O. (by reports) the #4 and #29 for "Superman" at #2 so we know that #1 overall wasn't getting that kinda deal.. With the Drew Brees deal and IF we traded down we would have lost out on Williams or Bush..so we did what we did

What kind of inferiority complex would we houstonians feel towards Dallas? I for one feel that Houston is the greatest city in the south and if anything Dallas should have an inferiority complex towards us. Plus, living in Dallas and hearing as much hate thrown h-towns way as I do, I would love to rub it in Cowboys fan's faces when they've lost 2 regular season games to the Texans. That's all I have for now, take it easy.

Fitting that Charleeeeeeeeeee Casserly's reign of terror ends with the HOUSTON TEXANS passing on VINCE YOUNG and reggie bush for a guy nobody's heard of. It boggles the mind if you stop to consider. People are, I think, in shock from a historical perspective. It was like the Texans were in receipt of a gift from manna and they just turned their backs. On a Texas legend. With an Aggie riding shotgun.

This better work out.

From strictly a public relations perspective, they had the top pick and managed to infuriate people not once, but twice. Incredible if you think about it. Nobody tops Charles Casserly. Nobody.

Nobody in positons 2-4 wanted to trade up. The Texans asked many times.

JW, you are wasting your keystrokes, doug seems to be a little dense about that fact.

what amazes me is people have a hard time realizing that there is a possibility that Bush,Young AND Mario might be good in their respected positions.

Too many people think it is a boom or bush, sink or swim scenario
:twocents:

for the league, I hope these rookies make their mark on the NFL and gives us years of entertainment

Sorry, but I will feel better if both Bush and Young bust.

Sadly, I feel the same way. I hate Houston always getting a bad rap in sports. If all 3 are successful, the Texans will still appear to have made the worst move.

Yea it's kind of disappointing that people will always question this pick no matter how good mario is. If Reggie is a bus or if he's awesome, we still won't know how he would have done in houston. so it's still hard to compare what he does in n.o. to what he "could have done" in houston. As long as our team is winning our fans will be happy.

Premature statement dont yah think.Let's give it a couple of years for everything to work out. Both Mario and Demeco may turn out to be a bust. We just dont know at this moment.
