Kiper on the Draft--790

HoustonFrog

Dallas Frog
Kiper said he talked to NFL executives today and that most have Leinart, Young and Bush all even. He said that by March 1st we will know who the Texans want when they either offer or not offer to Carr. He acted like it will be a "decision."He is about to tell who he thinks will be the Top 5 guys taken. He said Vince is better than Vick and that Vick is overrated.

VY is already better than Vick, 'eh? :hmmm: ....and he has yet to play a down in the NFL.... :um:

I heard the Hall of Fame is already talking about retiring his number, he's so good. :tv: (j/k!)

Let us know what else Kiper says, though. He's fun to listen to on the radio, even in disagreement.

***edit:

His Top 5 are:

1) Houston--Bush
2) Saints--VY
3) Titans--Leianrt
4) Jets--D'Brickashaw
5) GB--Mario Williams-NS St

I can see it. And it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it worked out this way ('ecept maybe Leinart to the Titans).

I don't think Vick is overrated but I do think he's in the WRONG offense.

He's not a west coast QB. He throws a good medium to long ball. He can't put touch on it.

He might need to run the spread offense his dang self.

My question is can VY adjust to being UNDER center.

Also speaking of Vick and VY.....name me the LAST JUNIOR QB to be succesful in the NFL?

Well he said he thinks VY is better than Vick with his overall skills and that most scouts and all are going crazy today because instead of throwing interceptions and still winning with his legs, he was 30 of 40 and was accurate all game. He did say that it would be hard to beat that performance and that his stock is at its highest. He said people picked apart Leinart this year and that the same will happen to VY if he goes back, plus Brady Quinn will be coming out. Those are his top 5, hands down and it could go anyway. He said that he really couldn't predict if Leinart or VY would be better because guys like Tony Eason and Blackledge went ahead of Marino..lol. He did say though that the draft is weird because Peyton Manning had a horrible pre-draft workout and that is why people thought Leaf was better. They said if his name was Peyton Jones he would have been a second rounder..lol

I just saw Kiper interviewed on ESPN and he said he thinks Bush will be a 12-15 carry a game RB in the NFL like he was in college and that he will need to share the backfield with another solid RB...

The Saints picking 2nd is reason enough for VY to NOT declair for the draft. Would you wanna go there.

The situation with the stadium and their long-term status is up in the air. However, they do have one of the better HB's in the league, a stud WR, and some nice pass-rushing DE's with which to rebuild a franchise.

Good points. They do have things in place.

The only way I see Vince coming to the draft is if Houston drafts him number 1 overall. Its going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds in the following months leading up to the draft.

Dan Reeves drafted Vick right?

Personally, I would draft bush and work on the OL and find some more defensive players in FA. You allready have a pretty good QB in Carr that can run, not as fast as VY or Vick, but he can still run. Be a different story if he could not run.

The only other option would be to pick VY and trade Carr, but i dont see us getting a Bush in exchange for him. There is no way VY is going to run in the nfl like he does in college.

I would like an answer to this.

Why would the offer to Carr signal what we are going to do??? Please excuse me if this is something obvious, but I've seen stuff all over the place on this.

Carr's bonus comes in Feb. He has a 2 year or 3 year option. It has been my understanding that we can give him the bonus and then trade him, if we care to do so. Is that correct?

Is there something about the bonus that would make other team's not want him?

Is there something with our contract with him that would make it impossible to trade him after offering him the option?

Would it just be better to just cut our losses with him and not offer him the bonus at all??? It was my understanding that he would prolly end up with more money in the open market if we didn't offer him the bonus. Is that true?

Thanks in advance for answers to my basic questions.

According to them and another post on here, March 1st or 2nd is the time limit they have to pick up his option and that by not picking up the option, it would be a sign that they were looking QB in the draft.

To the poster above that mentioned Reeves, they discussed that too and wondered if Reeves experience drafting Vick would have an impact on drafting a VY.

But back to my basic question, can we pick up Carr's option and still later deal Carr??? That is what I want to know. Can we hold em until we figure out what we want to do? If we deal Carr, we lose leverage in making deals and coming to contract terms with VY, because then we need a QB, instead of being in a position to take either Bush or VY.

Am I missing something?

I still believe we can trade him after the option but they other team would be stuck with some part of that base contract. I don't think you are missing anything. I think their main assertion was if nothing happens, well then they have a direction.

Yes we could always deal Carr it is gonna be a big cap hit though either way we do it unless we just dont pick up the option or let the option slide and transition tag him.

In this scenario, which I personally don't think will happen, wouldn't we be better off by simply letting Carr go? While you could get "some" trade value for him, you would still get nailed with cap issues. However, if you just failed to sign him to a new contract, wouldn't that clear up a ton of dollars? Please help me out on this one...thanks.

8 MILLION DOLLARS. :twocents: That's what you are missing. The team won't just hand Carr 8 mill and trade him. They will either pay him the 8 and keep him or trade him before they have to pay him. I dont know if we can trade him if we dont pay the roster bonus though becuase he would then be a free agent, I think.

As do we...in regards to key components to a building franchise.

We have a physically gifted, now somewhat gun shy qb
We have a great zone runner, and two solid back ups
We have a fullback who plays close to a pro bowl level
We have one of top WR in the league, along with the fastest player.
We have a solid D-line...a shiney new draft pick there.
We have one young, slightly overrated, but still studly CB, along with one who is physical gifted more than daunta.

that is a very good base.

maybe you're "missing" that carr has no value at his contract $. who would want him?

Trading Carr would be very expensive. We would have to take a cap hit of several millions of dollars next year.
