Kenny Wright: Starting Jags CB?

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars CB Kenny Wright has taken the most snaps with the first team defense, at right cornerback, during practice this week. He is considered the leading candidate to open the season as the starter, but he played behind CBs David Richardson and Chris Thompson last month.

So what do you guys think of Kenny possibly landing a starting Cornerback job with the Jaguars?
Personally, I believed Kenny was a good nickel back, but not to the level of an every day starter.

This also goes to show you that what would have been the #4 Cornerback on our depth chart, is the #2 Cornerback on the Jags. I think we've been just a tad bit spoiled when it comes to our Defensive Backs.

I don't know if Wright could beat out Lewis Sanders for the #4 CB spot. I don't think the Texans thought so, or they would've kept Wright and not signed Sanders.

When the Jags lineup for their season opener, I think rookie Scott Starks out of Wisconsin will be the CB opposite Rashean Mathis. If the Jags are going to take their lumps at CB, I think they do it with a guy with some upside.

Actually Jax's pass defense / rush isn't one of the better ones in the NFL. They ranked in the middle of the pack last season in sacks and YPG. If anything they were known for their run defense, which slipped a bit last year. I wonder if they wish they would have drafted D-Rob?

We've had a bunch of CBs rotating with the first team. Don't read anything into this.

The competition at right cornerback will be the feature attraction of training camp, with three players already having worked with the first-team defense at that position this spring and auditions to resume next Tuesday.

“We're having some very healthy competition at that position right now. A number of guys will have lined up with the first team. It'll be the most highly-contested position on the defense,” defensive coordinator Mike Smith told jaguars.com on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith was providing a capsule evaluation of spring OTA (organized team activity) practices, that reached the midway mark with a holiday week break from the action. The Jaguars will resume OTA's with a passing camp on Tuesday-Thursday of next week, then conclude with veteran camps on June 14-16 and June 21-22.

“We've got some experienced guys we brought in with Terry Cousin and Kenny Wright, and a new guy in Scott Starks, and then some guys from last year,” Smith said of his candidates for the vacant right cornerback job.

To date, David Richardson, Chris Thompson and Wright have worked with the first team. Smith said all of the candidates will spend time with the first team.

It is the Jaguars' position of greatest concern. Last year's starter, Dewayne Washington, was released in March and the Jaguars find themselves with a cast of candidates that include only one player, Cousin, who is a former starter at the position, but he started only five games for the Giants last season.

All I know is it really feels good to know we have now got this kind of talent at what is such an important position. And for a long time to if we play our cards right: we have talented starters who are very young and we're also deep at corner.

Looks like Wright has officially won the starting job.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Veteran Kenny Wright won the Jaguars' starting cornerback job, beating out five other players for the spot, The Florida Times-Union reported.

"He's been the most experienced, savvy and productive guy throughout all the competition this spring and fall," coach Jack Del Rio told the paper.

Wright beat out veterans Terry Cousin and Kiwaukee Thomas, second-year pros David Richardson and Chris Thompson and rookie Scott Starks.

Cousin and Starks will share duties as the Jaguars' nickel cornerback, Del Rio told the paper. The two beat out Thomas, who spent last season in that role.

The guy would have likely been competing for the 4th CB spot on our squad.

Doesn't say much for the jags corners. He doesn't have the speed to cover man deep and it's unlikely that he's gotten faster since he's left. The Texans liked Sanders better and let Kenny walk UFA.

This will be easy to exploit by teams who have really fast wideouts, e.g., AJ, Bradford, Mathis. He will need deep zone help like he always has. I recall his first start as a Texan in Tennessee in '03. That's the one where McNair passed for something like 520 yards and Mason had Kenny doing the Curly by halftime.

Unforunitly David Richardson got hurt and could not compete in preseason with a hurt ankle. He probably would have won it if he didnt get hurt.
