Kenneth Pettway

This may be in one of the other threads, (and sorry to point it out againif it is), but profootballtalk.com is reporting:

"The Jags put in a waiver claim for LB Kenneth Petway, who had been cut by the Texans."

HOUSTON – The Houston Texans announce they have signed the following players to the practice squad:

RB Jason Anderson
TE Aaron Halterman
T Garrick Jones
FS Jammal Lord
DE Alfred Malone
CB Chris McKenzie
WR Donovan Morgan
LB Kenneth Pettway

i still think pettway should have been kept on the regular 53-man squad...right now we only have 3 OLB's so what happens when peek or babin go down...we're just gonna have to sign him back to the regular roster then sign another guy to the practice squad...just do not know why we didn't cut orr

They (or any other team) can still claim him off the practice squad but they would have to release someone from their own 53 (like a Pat Thomas) in order to do that. I would be ticked if that happened. He's another Charlie Anderson in the making.

Wouldn't Pettway have to be placed on their 53 man roster and not their practice squad? idonno:

Yes, that's what I tried to say. Sorry it wasn't clear.

They would have to release someone from their 53 - like a Pat Thomas - so they could add Pettway to their 53.

Another example of finding a DE tweener under the radar who apparently has the potential to succeed as an NFL 3-4 backer and is selected late in the second day - 6th rounder like Anderson.

My bad. :penalty:

My reading comprehension sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

i like pettway better than Anderson. He's bigger and he's just as fast.

He has raw talent, but right now it is just that RAW. I like the guy. Don't get me wrong. But he's not ready to leap frog Anderson just yet.

oh, I know. i was not saying that pettway is better than anderson. i think that he could be if he works on the practice squad

I apologize for my complete ignorance of practice squads...but what is the role of the practice squad? Can we call them up to play if we have a bunch of injuries? :tomato:

The practice squad is basically a group of guys familiarizing themselves with the team by practicing with them. A player on a practice squad can be signed by any other team at any time. The signing team just has to put them on their active roster. They can be moved onto the Texans active roster at any time as well.

I thought that during the season we had 45 on our roster with 8 on the practice squad. Not 53 on our roster with 8 additional on the practice squad. Am I mistaken?

You are thinking Active and Inactive. The Practice Squad has always been in addition to the 53 man Roster.

Here's the breakdown:
53 on the roster
8 on the practice squad

On gameday:
45 on the active roster
8 roster players de-activated for that game

Why do they de-activate the 8 players on the roster? I have no idea.
