Kareem Jackson Thread-Tape Breakdown

Alright, now if I may ask a question, what do you folks expect your RCB to be able to do on a reverse.

Standard formation pro-offense and 4-3 base defense.

The opposite of what Dunta did in Buffalo... He needs to contain the play and then try and make the tackle.

Alright, now if I may ask a question, what do you folks expect your RCB to be able to do on a reverse.

Standard formation pro-offense and 4-3 base defense.

1. If his guy is receiving the ball, I'd want him to make sure it's not a double reverse and if it was, contain his end and tackle for a loss. (wr running towards him)

2. If his guy is receiving the ball, I'd like him to track him down either from behind the line of scrimmage but more likely for a small gain and make the tackle on the opposite side of the field. (wr running away)

3. If his guy is not receiving the ball, I'd like him to get off the block, get in the backfield and tackle the other WR for a loss. (wr running towards him)

In all cases, wrap up the WR, force the fumble, recover the ball and run it in for a TD. ;)

Nice...

Another thing being talked about is how he faced tough competition in the SEC. Typically the offenses in this conference aren't really known for their aerial attacks but more about rushing the ball. Look at the RB's he faced on a weekly basis during his 3 years of starting: Knowshon Moreno, Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Ben Tate, Dexter McCluster, Montario Hardesty, Anthony Dixon, Charles Scott, Jacob Hester, etc.

Obviously a CB's main responsibility is to cover WR's but in the NFL and particularly on the Texans, they're asked to support the run as well. Sounds like he's been able to do that fairly well against tough run-happy teams - and just as importantly, he's been able to stay healthy and not miss any games.
You are partially right there OleMiss.

But it's not that the SEC were not effecitve in the passing attack.
It's that their passing Defense were very good.

Check out the stats at ncaa.org
The SEC were good in pretty much everything.

As I promised I want to bring folks back down to earth, I also promise that I haven't presented everything KJ can do.

By the time I'm good and done with this thread, the scout(s) who was responsible for this draft should at least deserve some recognition... Even though it's fairly obvious if one does all his homework, that this one was a no-brainer for a team who needs a starting CB.

OK let me rephrase this.

His guy does not receive the ball, but instead try to take him deep.

And it doesn't matter what offensive formation it was.
The receiver will try to take the RCB (KJ) deep.

The TE is on the strong side, away from the RCB.

I haven't watched the entire game but McMannis looked pretty good on a few series that I saw.

I posted this in another thread but think it's worth mentioning , he could only do the benchpress from the East West Shrine game until the draft . He never got a chance to run , jump , or do drills .

Let's take an example, and see how the RCB did.
In this one, the WR didn't go long, but the DB played back already.
The guy you saw coming up at first is a safety.

Just under 8 mins to play in the fourth.
After the Ben tate's TD run.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBxrjT6ViCU&feature=related

It might be obvious that I'm trying to go somewhere with this.
ie., to see how a CB does on a reverse.

In this game, the receiver Zachery (Auburn) hasn't got time to get up to speed due to all the bodies in front of him.

First of, both the RDT and RDE (93 Mafuli and 94 Browne) weren't fooled.
They both cam back and forced Zachery to the outside.

The Wildcats played 3 deep. with the 4th guy the safety #17 Phillips, played up at the start but dropped back quickly.
#44 Tate went out and blocked him (good block Tate).
But still, Zachery was forced to slow down as he took a wider angle to the outside.

The WR #89 Adams and the LB #57 Williams were also in the way.

Now take a look at the RCB (in place of KJ) was taken by the LT #73 clear to the sideline.

All this allowed the other safety #10 the time to pursue and push Zachery out of bound. (LCB McManis showed up right afterward.)

Yet, it was still a 50yd run.

We have plenty of time to look at him later, yeah!
First impression was pretty good.

More on the reverse.

The same receiver Zachery 6-1-211.
Reported 40 time out of college 4.56
Unofficial current time 4.46
This time against Arkansas.

The Razorbacks weren't fooled either.
There were also tons of guys in front of the play,
making it hard for Zachery to get up to speed.

Again, the LT #73 took on the RCB (imagine KJ again) and drove him way out of the play, very early.

The OLB and both safeties were in pursuit without blockers.
They forced him toward the sideline.

Another LB (who had dropped back to check on the TE), came over and gave Zachery an ankle swipe, upsetting his balance.

This gave some time to the LCB to pursue and ran Zachery out of bound.

Still, that play went for 60 yds.

Jackson saw what was happening and was in "fairly" decent position - I think most CB's would be in this spot when they're getting blocked by a LT 15 yards downfield though!

Instead of him waiting there with the tackle between him and the ballcarrier, I would like to see him get on the other side as soon as he saw what was going on and then get ready for a nice form tackle.

His problem was his receiver carried him inside, when he came back there was the LT that did a minor holding

Was that Sherrick McManas?? Was that Sherrick getting beat on all those other plays?

McMannis is #24. He plays on the right side. All big plays were on the corner on the left. (even the long runs) The only highlight they showed from the right side was the fumble recovery of McMannis.

edit: One run to the right. McMannis was engaged on a blocker but managed to shove Tate OB for a gain of about 15.

yeap!

Our new CB looks pretty good, doesn't he?

Nice catch!

It's near impossible to see from the youtube video.

But from the game tape, when you slowed it down, you can see the LT pulled on his shoulder jersey. There was a lost momentum (very slightly) and it also caused KJ to fall on one knee, but he managed best he can to reach for the runner.

But let's disregard this, I still think KJ did a very decent job.

I think he did too. Certainly a lot better than Dunta's flail at Owens

First thing first.
Pretty much the whole team bought the run fake to the other side.
Auburn had blockers to seal off the backside on every level.
The RDE and the ROLB both had it bad; they were fooled and they were sealed off to make the matter worse.
Your containment started right there.

Next comes the safety; he also bought the fake badly.
And when he came back, he was cut down by the WR that KJ had avoided.
But that's not all. He got up and got in the way of the LB who finally came back and was knocked down terribly again.
This slow the LB down (I think it was McClain) and there goes the closest pursuit.

KJ put on a fake move to the outside of the LT then swirled past him to the inside. The runner cut to the outside. KJ actually did a zigzag thingy in that scenario (which means flex hips and good footwork); if not for that hold from the LT, IMHO, he would have made the tackle.

But at any rate, he still did enough to slow down the guy for the cavalry to arrive.

Too bad the LB and the safety got tangled up as I had described.
Arenas and another defender (either the other safety or another LB) did arrive but both overran the play as the runner cut back inside.

IMO, KJ gave a lot of guys enough time to get there, but none did anything to rectify their errors to begin with.

And as the other 2 examples showed, this time Zachery had the whole open field. Even if we marked this as "bad tape" for KJ, it could also be marked as a good run by Zachery who had shown that he can do it, even in traffic.

Alright, I'm gonna do something a little different as I remembered the bad tapes on Haden that I have mentioned before against S. Carrolina, a team which Kareem played very well against.

Good for comparison.Haden vs. S. Car

1st half

1-10 Pass Inc. under pressure; throw away
2-10 Pass Inc. under pressure; ball batted down
3-10 Ball tipped at the line; WR Brown caught it for 7
Good job by Haden to switch from his man to make the tackle.
But he had time to see the play.

1-10 Run play for 4yd.
Haden lined up at OLB position, was responsible for the alley
And filled it uncovered, what he was supposed to do.
3yd run, 4yd run First down
1-10 Run play one yd loss.
2-11 Pass Interference gators
1-10 Haden played tight in press man coverage and broke off a pass.
But lots of hands on the receiver though: arm around, hand on hip, pushing,
Jersey grabbing, all very subtle. Ref let them play, fine.
2-10 Tipped ball again; Incomplete
3-10 Screen pass to TE for 13
3yd run
8yd QB scramble due to pressure First down
3yd QB keeper
2-7 QB Hit, forcing an underthrow, inc.
3-7 WR ran a quick in and out pass Haden and caught the ball for 24yds.
His momentum carried him out of bound
.
A better throw and the receiver would have a chance with the safety
For a potential bigger play.
1-10 WR wide open 17yd pass play.
1 and goal, 1yd TD run up the middle.

So after that third down conversion from the Gators 42, the Gamecocks were able to score a TD

6yd run, 13 yd run
3yd run
Bad exchange, RB fumbled recovered by Florida

3yd QB draw
2-7 Haden played off-man, a least 3yd behind the first down marker
Quick swing pass to receiver who ran 14yds for the first down.
Haden needed help from the LB to bring the runner down.
Not the surest tackle there.

1-10 Pressure, throw away
2-10 Haden showed blitz too clearly, QB simply threw over him for 13yds.
3yd run
20 yd pass play
1-10 @ Fla 11 Haden was picked off clean by the wide-out.
Quick bubble pass to the slot man but stopped by the LB for 3yds
2-7 Haden started out in good position just outside endzone with help from safety.
Garcia scrambled away from LB Spike to buy time.
As the QB rolled left, the TE simply got past Haden to the corner for a TD.
Similar to how a Power Forward or Center (in basketball)
taking inside position over the defender.
But Haden never did use his body to block out.
Instead, he allowed the TE to loop around him easily.
TD.

1-10 Quick pass for 5 to the slot man; Haden was neutralized by the wide- out.
2-5 Similar to the run before where Haden was uncovered and responsible for the alley.
For some reason, he didn’t step up to fill it.
The RDE got off the LT and had a hand on the runner, but he bursted free.
Haden didn’t get him until a 13yd gain was in the book.
1-10 Under pressure, QB scrambled right and completed a 15yd pass.
1-10 Pass Inc. with not much time left in the half, QB wasn’t patient enough.
Probably wanted to stop the clock as well.
2-10 with 19 secs to go.
Haden never disguised the blitz.
The receiver made a signal but the RB didn’t bother to pick him up.
Garcia never took a look either, seems like nobody heard the WR.
Haden (from the slot) jumped on the QB who fumbled the ball.
SC recovered the ball as time ran out.

In the first half, the QB was under pressure early at least 6 times and had to throw the ball away. He also had the ball batted down twice at the line. He also had to scramble around and the Gamecocks also suffered a fumble due to bad exchange.

In the second half, Garcia would be pressured a whole lot more.
More batted balls. He would be sacked 5 more times.
He also encountered a bad snap, a pass deflected for an INT.
There were numerous penalties on the Oline.
And don’t forget all the dropped balls throughout the game.
In all Garcia ran around 13 times for a net loss of 21yds.

Haden was never under duress in the second half.

Bad snap 4yd loss
2-14 False start half the distance to the goal
2-15 Quick pass dropped by receiver
3-15 Ball batted down
Punt

13yd pass to TE
2yd QB draw
2-8 Ball batted down, still catchable but dropped.
3-8 Blitz thru the middle and sack – no time
Punt

3yd run
2-6 running play for 13 yds up the middle.
Good effort by Haden to come in for the tackle;
Safety was right there along with LBs coming back.
1-10 Quick pass for 9yds.
Again, Haden showed blitz early, WR signaled.
This time, the RB stayed to block;
Garcia threw over Haden for 9yds.
2-1 QB keeper for 2 and the first down
5yd run, 3yd quick pass
3-2 RB ran into the blitz no gain.
4-2 QB ran for 6 and a first down
1-10 Inc. pass thrown long and out of bound.
Miscommunication WR/QB
Also Garcia was hurried by the blitz.
2-10 False start
2-15 Another blitz, 3 defenders up the middle.
QB took a hard hit to complete a 12yd screen to the TE

(4th qtr)
3-3 Ball deflected at the line, INT Gators.

1-10 sack for 10yd loss on a blitz – QB never had the time
2-20 Only a 3 man rush and the LDE was in garcia’s face.
He dumped a pass to the RB in the flat;
the NT got off his man quickly and chased him toward the sideline.
The RB saw Haden coming up and dove to the sideline
(also to avoid the hit from the NT).
Somehow Haden was credit with a force fumble (huh?)
with the RB recovered the ball. He was already on the line and the ground caused the fumble. The ball was on the outside to start with; there was no chance of anything.
3-18 Just a 3-man rush and the QB got sacked right away
Punt

1-10 QB got sacked again as he started to set his feet.
2-14 false start half distance to the goal
2-18 Under pressure throw away
– perhaps due to good coverage from the other CB
3-18 Draw play no gain
Punt

Gators led 24-14
3yd run
quick pass for a first down
1-10 zone blitz sacked for 9yd loss in just over 2 secs.
2-19 Under pressure throw away.
3-19 With 2:14 left trailing 14-24, Garcia was desperate.
Haden played off-man on the TE who lined up at wide out on the right.
TE ran a flag route (in and out) past Haden to the inside than zig out to the sideline.
Haden sat back in the zone from the start
(a called play, perhaps to watch for the slot receiver who might cut underneath to the outside.)
Poor recognition by the QB who threw the ball right at Haden for a simple TD. Perhaps he thought Haden would follow the slot receiver who had ran toward the middle.
The TE was wide open with a throw over the top.
The safety would come over but wouldn’t be able to stop the first down.
The Gators had a 3-man line and rushed 3.
Clearly they were in prevent defense.
Good job by Haden (?) but IMHO, it was more the result of a bad play by the QB

So, how do you think of Haden's play in that game?
Was he deserving of the Defensive Player of the Game Honor?
That was what he got!

Anyway, I highlighted some of the running plays where Haden was washed out to warn of a trend.

When we come to the SEC Championship game, it would prove to be among the main differences that favor the Tides.

Stay tuned!

Cain't hardly wait!

I wanted to tone down on Kareem Jackson, but he makes it very hard for me to do so.

vs. Auburn after that reverse.

1-10 Good coverage. KJ had outside position on a throw to the deep left corner.
Pass overthrown; otherwise KJ would be the one with first shot at the ball.

2-10 Play action fake, QB draw for 13yds.
KJ made the tackle.
What's so special about a CB stopping a 13yd draw play?
You just have to roll the tape and watch it in slow motion.

This guy has excellent field vision and possesses the natural instinct, the smart,
and the athleticism to play the game.
He shows tremendous flexibility in the hips, the ability to turn and run with ease.
(in the Florida game, he shows that he can turn one way and then turn back the other way
without breaking stride, making it look so simple as if he was running a straight line all that time.)
He also shows great footwork and balance.
And he knows how to use his arms and hands to advantage in fighting off blockers.

In this play, he was backpedaling but kept his eyes on both the QB
and the RB (Tate) who lined up away and drifted outside for a possible screen pass.
KJ broke off the receiver immediately and had to avoid the ref
as well the downfield lineman #57 to get to the QB.
Both safeties would join him, the first one was about 4-5 steps late in his start.
KJ had read his key well when he saw the RG #57 pulled behind C and started downfield
(that can't be a long pass.)
Neither of the safeties did recognize the play until the QB was well in his strike on the run
even though they were not obstructed by anything.
They weren't threatened by any receivers deep either.
(One LB had stepped up to check on Tate, the other dropped with the TE; the Tides were in nickel.
The middle was wide open.)

1-10 And unlike Haden, when the receiver slowing down on his slant route, KJ knew something was going on.
Sure enough, the receiver wanted to seal off the back side for another reverse.
KJ got up in the alley making sure the edge was protected.
Then he squared up and waited for the runner to commit himself before he went for the tackle.
(All this was in constant motion, not like he had all day to sit there and wait).
It was a 3yd run, only because the Jack LB #32 was washed out by the FB, slowing McClain down in pursuit.
That could have been a negative play.

Now come the fun play.
2 and goal at the Tides' one-yd line.
Auburn in power formation with an extra lineman outside the RT; the TE outer most.
The FB behind, between the extra tackle and the TE.
RB Tate in the backfield.

KJ lined up just outside the TE but did not follow when the TE released.
Instead, he head straight upfield, started to penetrate to the inside.
But he quickly realized that the FB and the play was going outside on a stretch run.
KJ changed direction on a dime (WOA that move right there wins the Dancing with the Stars contest).
He beat the FB to the punch with a combination of great footwork and handwork and a show of physicality.
(The guy is some 230 lbs).
Tate was forced back inside for no gain.
That would have been a TD for sure.

Next series.
3-5 KJ played off-man, but quickly stepped back up ready to jump the route.
The QB pulled the ball back just in time and went elsewhere for an incompletion; overthrow.
Punt

1-10 Another reverse; and the Tides lost containment again up front.
And as usual, the safety #4 got washed out by a receiver's block.
Again, KJ set the edge outside the LT #73 and made the tackle.
A 13yd gain. Unspectacular? You bet; but he also saved a TD right there.

Same series
1-10 Only 2 secs but still a coverage sacked. Guess why? Good coverage again by KJ.
The QB wanted to pass, but hesitated, then wanted to try again, then saw the Jack LB charging.
He pulled back and tried to brace for the hit; didn't matter; fumble, Tides recovered.

Next series.

1-10 Complete pass to WR Adams 27yd along the sideline.
He was about 5yds past KJ, caught the pass, then stepped out of bound as the safety arrived.
Different camera angles did not show enough of the play.
What I saw at the start was that KJ had good position on the receiver, pinning him to the sideline.
The receiver started to make his move to the inside; there were contacts.

The announcers, for some reason, didn't see the play either.
"... KJ, I believe (I think) fell down... You can see KJ obviously a little baffled by what happened.
Either he fell or he was expecting help over the top."

IMO, what the announcer referred to as "a little baffled" stemmed from the fact that KJ looked back at the side judge when the play was finished. I think KJ wanted an offensive pass interference call.

I didn't see the move from the receiver as really sudden to cause KJ to cross himself
and trip.

At any rate, the Tides forced an out soon afterward.

Halftime.

2nd Half

3-1 Screen pass to Tate on the other side of the field.
KJ first one to get there on the tackle for a 3yd-loss.
How'd that happen?

KJ showed intention to blitz from RCB (where he plays pretty much exclusively),
and that ought to tip the Tiges, right?
Obviously, they were so concerned, they wanted two guys blocking him,
even at the risk of optioninng the Jack LB #32
And KJ beat both the FB and the LT (one after the other).

#32 had a straight line to the QB, forcing him to hurry his throw, behind Tate.
Tate had to turn around to catch the ball and made a nice spin move to get past the LDE back toward the inside.
KJ made the tackle from behind for the loss.

Late in the third quarter, KJ would shake off both the receiver and the LT to make the tackle on another reverse; this time limiting it to just a 2yd gain.

Then on 2-13, the QB was forced to pull up and run as KJ was in good coverage again.

4th quarter

2-9 Pitch out to Tate on a stretch run left, stopped for a 7yd loss by Guess Who???
Another great play by KJ.
He was playing 5yds off-man, but read the play like a book.
Came up quickly, flew past the receiver, made sure he set the edge outside the LT,
set his feet and made a nice tackle.
Announcer: "KJ does a great job. They had Burns (WR) trying to block him on the outside.
KJ went by him as if he wasn't even there".

That made it 3rd and 16.
The Tides unloaded McClain and Arenas to sack the QB on the next play forcing a punt.

Tides led 26-21 with 1:24 left to go.
Auburn last chance.
KJ contributed 2 good plays as the Tides went to prevent and Auburn ran out of time.

1. Good coverage on the deeper route, forcing the QB to go short with the underneath receiver.
KJ came right up along with #32; the receiver saw them coming and dropped the ball.

2. KJ dropped deep in the zone. He was the furthest man (among a trio) from the receiver, yet flew in quickly and made the tackle. Excellent recognition skill.

Alright, here comes the SEC Championship game.

I'd like to present Joe Haden first this time.
See what you think about where he was drafted at!?!
He's hardly involved in any passing play... for a reason.

Haden vs. Alabama

3-4 Bama WR Julio Jones ran a slant inside from the slot.
Haden with decent coverage, but Jones dropped the ball.
Shoulda been a first down.
Haden had one of his hand on the receiver just the same as KJ (in another game) but this time, no PI was called.

2-7 Ball thrown into double coverage.
Pretty good coverage by Haden; but without the safety, it's most likely a 17yd catch.
Haden played it correctly, utilizing safety help.
Lots of hands on the body though.

1-10 Ingram 7yd run left end. (a little less than 7 mins to go in the first qtr).
On playside, Haden was driven way away into the parking lot by Julio Jones (and I mean it).

1 and goal at the 7.
Ingram TD up the middle.
Jones clearly was ready to block but Haden made no attempt to do anything.
He would at least had a chance at Ingram had he tried to get involved in the play.
He took off a lot of plays this way in the game.

2-10 Richardson found nothing up the middle.
He bounced outside and met Haden 2yd behind the LOS with a stiff arm
and shook off Haden's arm tackle. Safety saved the day coming over to push runner out of bound after 7yd.
Haden played the weakside uncovered (no receiver).
His responsibility was to protect the alley and turn any run back to the inside.
He failed miserably even with good position 2yd into the backfield.

1-10 Again, Haden played weakside on the run play.
He got cleared off by the TE and lost total containment.
25yd run for Richardson.
Haden tried to come back and promptly missed a tackle.
(The safety had caused the RB to lose balance and another defender had also arrived.)

3-2 Ingram off LT for 5 and a first down.
Here it clearly shows Haden's weakness.
The Tides often moved the receiver Jones inside to block, disregarding Haden.
This time, Jones would take on the OLB (in a 5-man front) and clear him to the outside.
It is true that the safety Wright came up and missed the tackle.
But Haden was also right there, but he simply was not ready nor strong enough for it.

In running plays he continued to get neutralized or killed by the receiver.
He was very passive most of the time even when unblocked.
This guy is far from physical in the run game;
he will be a liability if he doesn't work on his strength.

The Tides were content to exploit other guys in the passing game and Haden in the running game
on the way to a convincing 32-13 win.

Now it's Kareem jackson's turn

vs. Florida 09 SEC Champiosnhip

2-8 KJ with Good coverage; Tebow went the other way.
3-8 Good coverage everywhere; Tebow threw the ball away.

Punt

Bama led 9-0

1-10 Played the option well, staying with the pitch man while controlling the QB;
Tebow had to turn up the middle for no gain.
Announcer was praising KJ.

KJ was also aware of the situations, running down/passing situation.
He reads the QB, RB and WR well.
If the WR makes a move to block, KJ knows to get off
and promptly find the runner instead.
It showed on another running play, and throughout the game.

2-10 Jammed the WR at the line and locked steps with him.
Tebow waited and waited and finally dumped a swing pass to Nelson for a loss of one.

3-12 Good coverage on the slant in good position to jump the route if throw underneath;
Tebow threw high and long to keep the ball away from KJ, almost intercepted by the safety
(just off his hands); pressure was on.

FG 9-3 Bama

1-10 Good coverage on the WR Hernandez locking step while locating the ball;
Tebow had to throw outside, absolutely no chance for a catch.
Both announcers were praising now.
One: "Here's play fake; and good coverage from KJ down the left side line...
Boy, was he covered from the get go."
Two: "And he stays so disciplined. He stays with the bump and run coverage...
That's perfect technique!"

2-10 A 14yd option pitch on the other side was negated by a holding penalty.
But here you can see the difference; unlike KJ,
the safety #4 didn't stay with the pitchman James and thus allowed the big run.
Tebow was already covered by he Jack LB #32 Anders (and Cody and McClain).

2-11 Both the MLB and OLB didn't account for the RB; they both dropped back to follow the TE.
KJ was locking steps with the WR; he read the swing pass and came right back up.
He sealed the edge, cut off in the direction where the RB Moody wanted to go (outside).
Moody tried to put on the brake and slipped. KJ made the tackle for a loss of 3.
This could have been a long gainer with KJ the lone defender in the area.

3-14 KJ switched quickly to the slot receiver who ran the wheel route together with the wide-out.
Tebow looked and looked, and finally had to go the other way as pressure started to come.
Pass almost intercepted by the other CB.

Punt
Bama led 12-3 now

2-1 Broken play. Tebow wanted to go right but can't.
He turned around to the left side.
#2 made a good cut block, KJ still managed to jump over him and just missed Tebow at the ankles.
The OLB was cut down cleanly by #55; McClain was late in pursuit.
The safety took forever to come up. 23yd run.
I don't think he can do any better than that.
Not too many guys can avoid that cut block where the blocker had such good angle and timing.

1-10 Tebow up a big hole in the middle;
KJ got off his blocker to make the tackle.
These two big runs here, with Haden, would have been much bigger.

Later, Tebow baited Arenas for a TD pass
Bama lead shrunk to 12-10 but they would score to go back up 19-10

Tides got beat in the middle in zone coverage.
WR Cooper ran a slant to the middle and went pass the safety
and both LBs without anybody even noticing him.
The other safety and a DB finally came and both overran Cooper.
KJ had switched to another WR who ran a corner route from the other side.
Now he had to come over to save the TD. 59yd gain.

FG Bama led 19-13 at the half.

2nd half

1-10 KJ got off his man to stop Tebow on a 3yd run.

3-7 Tight coverage to stop the WR a yard short of the first down.
(KJ had to make sure first that the receiver wouldn't run past him to take a longer pass.)
Punt

Bama TD to lead 26-13

2-12 KJ jumped in front of the receiver to deny the pass.
"Kareem Jackson who is having a BIIIIG game in the secondary"
(Announcer emphasized the word "BIG".)

Tebow would be pressured on the next play and threw an incompletion.
Punt

A long drive found the Tides atop 32-13 early in the 4th.

1-10 Good coverage, forcing Tebow to go somewhere else, and get hit as he threw the ball;
the fumble was overturned as they rule his arm just started its forward motion.

2-10 Screen pass to Hernandez; safety missed the tackle.
KJ got off his man and set his feet to stop the WR.

Two plays later, Tebow made a bad decision and threw an INT.

9:42 same score

1-10 Tight coverage; KJ broke off a slant to Cooper in the middle.
Tebow would never look his way again for the rest of the game.

Thank you very much for this... judging him by your write ups kinda make him sound like a shutdown corner with great run support abilities. How did this guy from a major organisation fly under the radar?

The question of KJ being "under the radar", I can see, is legitimate.
Even as I watched a lot of his games before the draft, I still missed lots and lots of things.
It's just impossible trying to watch too many players at the same time.
Not counting the offense, I still had to watch Cody, McClain, and Arenas.
Then I had to give some attentions to the future, noting guys like #57 DT, #24 CB/nickel back.
And there were other guys on that Defense who might be good enough as backup or situational players.
True that I watched some plays many times, but I still missed a lot.
Even as I concentrated on just one player (KJ) for these reviews, I had to go back at least two times for each play. And I found that I still missed some of the first, or second look.

Other posters had also pointed out many other valid reasons.

I will try to give some more:
The way the Tides defense was set up, they were content to let KJ play one-on-one with any receiver on his side.
Pretty much, he had 1/3 of the field to cover.

If you notice, in my reviews, it was always "KJ with good coverage... the QB had to go somewhere, which resulted in an incompletion, or an INT"

And never "The QB, on second look, pass to the receiver on KJ's side".

On the second or third read (in college), the QB are bound to make more mistakes; therefore, other guys had more chance to make plays on the ball.
On the other hand, the QB never went to KJ on the second look; he never gets the benefit of any mistakes.
Not only that, the QBs were more careful with their throw to his side as compared to their throws to other sides (all on first reads).

And look, I only describe a "near to shut down" corner at the collegiate level.
Last year, he did not play against the elite receivers that are "destined" to become killers in the NFL.

Even though the 3 guys that were drafted all have potential and some other receivers will very likely be drafted next year.

We still don't know how he can hang with the best in the NFL.
(He did practice wih a very good one, Julio Jones, whose future I think is very bright.)

What we know is that KJ is a very solid-and-sound player.
He only will improve on techniques and learn more tips and tricks on how to play at the higher level.
If he's going to be beat, it will be against good players "very" mostly (I think).

And that he's a very very good run-support defensive back.

IMHO, his floor is much better than Haden; their ceilings unknown.
Some think that since Hayden is a year younger, he has higher ceiling.
I'd say Hayden would have to improve a lot to reach that lofty ceiling.

And while everybody is hot on the Cush's latest, let me just complete the KJ series while I have some time.

vs. UT National game

1-10
Kareem read and played the pitch well; McCoy had to turn up the middle for no gain.
McCoy was hurt and went out, replaced by Gilbert.

1-goal at Bama 2-1/2
Kareem was moving with the motion man
(how the Tides use him at times; it will be seen again.)
Kareem was able to penetrate just outside LT;
this, together with outside containment prevented the 1st down.

2-goal just inside the one; power formation.

Again, Kareem followed the motion man #24;
this time he would penetrate outside RT,
warded off #24, and cut down the FB #33 at the POA just behind the LOS.
This allowed #57 to stop #31 for a 1/2 yd loss.
WOA, a CB who is good at the goal line, who is this guy?!?

3-goal just outside the one; power formation.
Gilbert rolled out to the right for a pass.
Kareem followed the motion man #24 who went into the right corner.
He would play back and #27 would play in front of the receiver;
Gilbert had to throw the ball away.
Well played, Kareem, well played!

FG.

In 3 consecutive plays near the goal line, KJ contributed greatly to prevent the TD.
The Horns could have been successful in any of those instances.
That was as good as any LB or safety can play.
But a CB?

2nd qtr

Tides led 7-6

1-10
Kareem good coverage

3-10
Nobody open for gilbert; good coverage Kareem

Punt

Tides 14-6 now

1-10 Ulastoski pulled outside TE. Good lead block on an end run.
Safety came up but got swept off by FB, hindered McClain and 32 in pursuit.
28yd run.
Kareem was setting the edge to wait for help.
Can he do better? Don't think so. Can't expect too much.

3-5
Kareem protected the rear on WR Shipley.
Tides had two guys reading the play in front, LB 27 and CB Arenas.
INT for Arenas. Kareem also had a chance for the INT had Arenas not caught it.

Thomas continued not to look so hot on run support on several plays (3)
But also made one good tackle.

Punt.

Punt

Tides FG to lead 17-6
Then wow, freak play, bad shuffle pass by Gilbert.
Bama 24-6 at the half.

2nd half

1-10 9yd run
Kareem was so so on this play.

1-10 gd coverage kareem

2-10
gd coverage Kareem on the slant showing smooth hips, incomplete.

Penalty on Horns
2-25 Inc.
3-25
Kareem got cut by the slot man; but IMO he set the edge, a little too agressively.
Main problem was with the safety taking wrong angle again.
Again, you can afford an aggressive play on 3-25 when you're supposed to have help.
Anyway, it was a Punt.

Tides also punt

1-10
kareem with great coverage pinning WR to the sideline.

3-8
kareem (with great awereness) came over from the other side to deliver a big blow on 84 to prevent a big gain.

2-10 kareem gd coverage
but Gilbert threw a TD pass in the middle due to a bad play by Arenas & #23

24-13 Tides

Horns recovered the onside kick

1-10
I disagree with the announcer here.
Kareem did look back at the ball as he put out his hand and he never did quite make contact with Shipley.
The official was right there and had a clear view.
Great coverage and distraction by Kareem on the incomplete pass.
The call was correct.

3-11 on UT 41
Kareem with tight coverage.
He looked back at the ball as he made contact with the receiver to break off the play.
Again, the official was right there. The announcer wanted a PI.
The WR#9 actually put a hand on KJ to push off first.
It was a bang bang play.
A complete pass would give the Horns a first down at the 43.
A no-call was about right.
I think it was a smart play by Kareem, looking back at the ball quickly.
Incomplete.
Sorry Horns' fans.
Punt

4th qtr

The Horns missed McCoy but Gilbert did a good job
(as long as he doesn't try to challenge KJ, that is!)
The Tides played very conservative without Ingram.

1-10 KJ good coverage, QB had to pull up and run and sacked or no gain.
Actually, Shipley should have been called for a face mask pulling on Kareem like that.
Announcer: "(QB) is looking off to his left to Shipley.. but unfortunately Shipley's trying to go against Kareem Jackson and he can't shake it; KJ is all over him; eventually there's nothing the young QB can do with his football..."

.....
Gilbert would go elsewhere to move the Horns downfield and scored.

2-13
TD to #8 over #23;
good coverage kareem on the other side.
2 pt conversion pass to #4 over 27

Tides lead now only 24-21 with over 6 mins to go.

Horns get the ball back with 3:14 to go.
They made a mistake optioning the Jack LB 32 Anders for the third time in the game.
He had a clear path to the QB, fumble, Tides recovered at the 4.

Everything else is academic.

......

The good news for Horns fans is that the LT that the Texans picked up as UDFA played an excellent game.

He totally neutralized the DE, and destroyed the Jack LB 32
I just don't agree with optioning #32 (or anybody) deep in your own territory with a young QB who hardly ever play.

If Ulatoski can play like that in every game (something I haven't looked at) he would have been the first tackle drafted. What's the scoop here, Horns fans?!?

I don`t know how much you`ve seen of Kyle Wilson and Devin McCourty, but how would you rank the 1st round CBs?

Oh, and if you`re up to some more tape watching and analyzing, I´d be really interested in what you think about Earl Mitchell...

I've been out of the pocket. Just got back.

I had watched 7 games that Mitchell played.
I need some time to organize some stuffs, so I don't think I can get to it until next week.

As far as the CBs, instead of ranking them, (I think OleMissTexan said it best) it can also be looked at as how they fit with each team.

The Texans like to play press man coverage often, so KJ is a perfect fit.
Also, he played almost exclusively on the right side (Dunta's side).

Kyle Wilson played all over the place, including the slot. That versatility is good for the long run, but KJ's multiple reps at one spot make him more ready to play.

McCourty played a lot of cover 2 at Rutgers where the CB often gives the receiver a good bit of cushion. He does play man coverage from time to time but not a lot.

Both guys are fast; they all can cover well, but KJ is the best at run support and tackling.
He's almost always in good position where as Wilson and McCourty did take poor angles many times. And they don't always set their feet before making the lunge at the ball carier.

Thanks a ton for this information. Great stuff!

Nice quote from Jacoby on Jackson

"He's aggressive," Jones said. "I like that. He's good. He can run, he's very athletic, and he's smart. He doesn't mess up twice."

And from Kubes

"He looked good," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "He went right to work with the first group from day one. We have very high expectations for him. He'll have to earn his keep, and I don't have any doubt he'll do that."

I like the praise Jackson is receiving. Hoping it's not off season hyperbole, but so far it sounds like they like how he fits in.

Week 8 - Kareem vs. Tenn
Jonathan Crompton is a good solid QB but not spectacular.
Tenn ha a couple of receivers that show promises.

1. Gets beat on a quick slant off a nice move by the WR for 14yds
(third play of the game, I think.)
2. Gets beat on a same slant again,
this time for 27yds against Hardesty who lined up at wide out.

It just looks like he wasn't ready at the start of this game.
Maybe he thought the QB wouldn't challenge him so early in the game.

I just watched this game. I agree somewhat with your take. However, as I watched the early minutes of this game, I thought he was simply unprepared. He kept looking inside, as if he was looking for direction, and didn't get set up until just before the snap.

I've got to say, I was very disappointed with what I saw early on. Tennessee challenged the other CB, the other side of the field more frequently. I don't know if that is because it is easier for the CB to see that side of the field or because he was "weary" of Kareem Jackson.

But every time he tested KJ's side, he was successful.

KJ was on his team side line.
He was making signals and relaying messages from the coaches to the other guys in the secondary.
(Whether they would play off-man, press-man, box-and-one, things like that).

What do you mean by "every time"?
The first one was the third play of the game where the receiver put on a great move at the line and beat him on the slant.
The Tides played 2-deep safeties; KJ knew he had help (which was what happened) and was peaking at the RB.

The second time he got beat on another slant toward the end of the quarter.
Actually, if you watch that play again (carefully), you would see that he also had safety help and was looking to jump the route.
He was pretty close to breaking up that pass.

The third time was as I described in the post that analyzed the game.

The Tides 2nd and 3rd CBs are J. Arenas and M. Johnson.
These guys are athletic. They can make plays but they also got burnt from time to time.

Look for M. Johnson next year. That kid can really sky!

Edit.
My Bad. Johnson is a seventh round pick for the Rams.
Dang. That's a steal!
