Karan Higdon

Our HOF 34
It appears we picked up a pretty promising RB at 5.9 and 208, he has 4.49 speed, and did 21 reps in the bench press, Tytus Howard our 1st RD pick did 21 as well. He looks pretty good, what do you guys think?
Well that certainly is impressive build, speed and strength so now we’ll see if he can run the ball in the NFL. Lord knows he’ll get plenty of opportunities with us on 1st and 2nd down.

I liked Higdon predraft and thought he would go in the 5th.
He is well known for great natural balance so he won't be pushed over or tripped up too easily.
He is also a reknowned arm tackle buster.
His main weakness is he is not really proven as a catcher with only a small sample size.
Also not a big time blocker but is willing.
Unless Buddy Howell is very good on STs, Higdon likely takes his #3 spot.

He runs way bigger than his size would indicate. His size and speed say 'change of pace back' but his skill set is very much that of an early down power runner. Runs through contact, great balance, has speed in the open field. Biggest issue is his vision. Extremely inconsistent. All of Michigan's RB's would miss giant holes on the regular and Higdon was no exception. Also, has very limited experience in the passing game. UM would bring in the backup RB to catch passes and the 3rd string RB to pass block. Either way, Higdon was rarely on the field in those situations.

His problem is that he's solid across the board, but not great at any one thing. That and he's undersized for what he brings to the table skill-set wise.

With his lack of vision, is he a faster version of Blue?

He reminds me of a more athletic Kapri Bibbs. His vision isn't bad, just inconsistent. He'll have some impressive runs where he hits a tiny hole and bursts into the second level then the next play he'll miss a huge cutback lane and run right into the arms of a DL.

If he cracks the game roster do we get to call him "MuscleGerbil"?

Opinions on Higdon? Did he show enough last pre-season for a possible bump up from the practice squad if Hyde and Miller are not brought back? I remember liking what little I saw of this guy.

Higdon was a solid RB with speed at Michigan. He may be ready for a bigger role this off-season based on the fact that he should've got strong over the past season and adjusted mentally to the speed of the NFL game.

He is undersized and struggles in the passing game. Typically undersized RBs need to thrive in the passing game to be a factor. For me, I would pass on him having any impact with us.

Ray Rice, 5'9", 195 and Jones-Drew 5'7", 210 may disagree with you. Maybe he just needs a chance, you never know.
Sorry, but he is NO Ray Rice or MJD. Of all the shorter, 200 pound backs coming out of college, you have 1 in 1000 that turn out to be Rice or MJD. That's like saying every undersized QB will be the next Russell Wilson. Judge on realistic comparisons. Also, Higdon never caught more than 8 passes in a season in college. Rice and MJD were catching 25+ in their senior year. Their pass catching comparisons are not even similar.

You said he was undersized and not good in the passing game. Undersized doesn’t mean much to me and since when does OB get his RBs involved in the passing game enough to worry about if he can catch everything?
Just saying, maybe OB has a Rice or Jones-Drew sittin right there... never know. Im not blowing his horn that he will be the next best thing. Just commenting to his size, you can’t just simply rule him out because he’s “undersized”. That’s all

If you watch football, you know that you can generally rule out an undersized RB in the NFL if he is irrelevant in the passing game.

How can you rule it out when we wasn't really running passing plays like that in the preseason? Can't make a determination in that aspect when it's not being employed

Watch his entire college career and read his predraft analysis. He never caught more than 8 passes per season in college and all analysts named his pass catching ability as a weakness.

Michigan rarely threw to their backs.
Your arguments are a stretch. He has proven nothing about pass catching in college and all analysts criticized him as a pass catcher for what he did show. Sure he “could” be good, but you are being very generously optimistic and not very realistic.

You’re tripping. Again how can he prove anything when Michigan didn’t utilize him like that. And the Texans didn’t run those type of plays for him in the pre season.

They said that Fells was a blocker and would not be a factor in the passing game. It turned out that he was. He was just not called on previouslybefore coming to the Texans to demonstrate that skill.

Of late he proved that he can drop a lot of passes.

We cannot risk going into the season with Duke Johnson and any of the other running backs. We need a running back, Good through the middle And an adequate pass-catcher. A Dobbins, Zack Moss or the kid from Wisconsin. Or a guy who can replace Hyde on day 3 of draft.

Ok.... so based on the fact you claim Michigan did not use him "like that", and we did not run "those type of plays for him", and all pre-draft, scouting reports had him labeled as a poor pass catcher, what gives you any indication that he is worthwhile pursuing AT ALL in the passing game??

RGV82

......again, how does that play in OB's offensive system?
The fact that every starting RB in OB's system has either a) been at least 5'10, 220 pounds OR has proven pass-catching ability either in college or with previous NFL teams - to which Karan Higdon has none of these.

Darren Fells is a massive 6 foot 7, 270 pound Tight End who was praised for his pass catching potential coming out of college. Karan Higdon is an undersized Running Back who was criticized for being too small and having no pass catching ability coming out of college. You are comparing apples to oranges.

I'm not saying Higdon will turn into a good reliable pass catcher.........just the point is neither had opportunity to show his wares.

My point is that an undersized RB with no proven pass catching ability is not worth taking a flier on. RBs are a dime-a-dozen. If we’re gonna take a flier on a RB, he should at least have something proven to offer at the NFL level and standards.

In regular season games...........48 targets............34 receptions............7 TDs (team record for touchdowns by a tight end during the regular season..............and he added another in the loss to the Chiefs) .............5 drops

I'll take those numbers any day of the week.
I won't accept them.
