Johnson to replace Walker?

ATX

Hall of Fame
is this the projection for Johnson or will he be NT? can he play all 3 spots on the line?

well he should atleast push for some playing time...he should be a very good rotational guy...adds some aggression on our D-Line...i like this pick a lot

i was surprised to see them take Johnson. I figured they would stay away with guys with off field issues. I think D-line was a big need though. Good choice.

I would have rathered Pollack but this was a good pick. We needed young Dlinemen.. and Travis Johnson looks like he could be a good one.

I dont think he will start.. but I think he will get plenty of playing time behind Walker and possibly behind Payne too. This will keep our old starters fresh.. and give Johnson plenty of reps.

Yall are forgetting the really good news though :)

This means that Peek is gonna be the starting OLB next to Babin. We are gonna be blitzing a LOT next year :)

Capers was just on the radio saying that he will be in on many packages right off the bat and will be worked in on 1st and second downs as well.

I've always thought our biggest need was in the trenches on both side of the ball. Weak OL class, so we got what some scouts think is the best DL in the draft. Sounds good to me!

Everyone needs to remember that we have yet to go through a season with Walker and Payne playing the entire time.

Does this force GFunk to restructure his contract to stay a Texan after this season? :hmmm:

Remind me not to pay too much attention to John McClain when next years Draft rolls around because he has said the following numerous times this year:
(1) best positions in this draft are WR & CB and with our trade for PB
that's means they look primarily at WR - according to McClain
(2) They'd never use a 1st round pick on a DL. And actually they have
a starting DL that has no one selected higher than 3rd round. It's
been my understanding that part of the appeal of the 3-4 is DL
come cheap - then they use their top overall for DL in their 3-4.
Go figure ?

Not like he has any big shoes to fill, he cant be worse than anyone we have now.

i agree. i like the fact that we got a d-lineman and not o-line help. i was hoping for either spears or pollack, but i like johnsons fierce intensity. he plays with alot of tenacity. i hope he can get lots of playing time bc quite frankly, i dont think gary walker can make a huge enough impact on this defense bc of his age.

I think we will see him a ton in pass rushing situations. We leave at least one base lineman in on 3rd and long. Sometimes we put our OLB's on the end in long yardage situations. Now we can put in a penetrating DL type in Johnson in addition to say Babin and Peek. We gave up more 3rd and longs than I can count last year.

I guess you didn't hear McClain on the radio yesterday...He said our pick would most likely either be Spears or Travis Johnson...I assumed he didn't know what he was talking about, but he was right...

No I sure didn't, but I've heard Spears name mentioned many times this year
to McClain and he always replys (until yesterday apparently), that Capers
would not use a #1 pick on Spears or any DL. The Texans must have finally let McClain inside yesterday.
I've done a little research since our pick and turns out TJ is the most highly
rated "pure" run stopper type DT. Of course that's what we sant in our 3-4 D. Spears is a tremendous athelete, but more of a hybrid DT/DE. Most of the mocks I've seen on TJ today have him anyway from mid teens to mid twenties. He's got some character problems in his history, though.

All reports (from "insiders") are that Barron was the 3rd rated OT on their board...Take that FWIW though...

SURPRISE,SURPRISE,SURPRISE!!!!! At least to me. Seems like a fairly safe pick that will help us out. Beats the heck out of O-line help, and we have tinkered with the LB's quite a bit already. Wish we could have gotten higher than a 3rd rnd. next year though. Oh well, good move CC

johnsons off field problems are not as big as they seem, he was caught up in a sexual assault case, and was acquitted due to him having previous relations with the woman.... so i dont really hold that against him, and i dont know if he has had any more problems since then or not, but if that is his only off field issue, then its not much to worry about

I haven't been able to find any more "dirt" on him, but I did find out that the woman that accused him of sexual assault was a shot-putter at FSU...Google is a very good tool...

Sooo, what your saying is she was from Romania?
:woot

I think TJ is gonna end up as a good pick for us. His off-field stuff sounds kinda like Kobe Bryant(minus the huge payday she coulda gotten) and he was aquitted in1/2 an hour by an ALL WOMAN JURY!!. Not a problem child here. Scouts Inc. also say he has a high spped motor and gives it his all every play. We have tinkered with our LB's enough for one year and helped the secondary with PB. I say GOOD PICK!!!

:heh: That's pretty much what I was getting at...I'm not gonna knock his hustle, though...To each his own...

Just augmenting what you said. I hadn't paid much attention to him since we just signed some BIG contracts on the DL. Completely surprised me. I thought it was a typo. LOL

Well if they would have had a kid i bet he would be one hell of an o-lineman in the draft of year 2028.
