I only caught the last half hour. They talked about how the Kubiak hiring thing was much like Romeo Crennel's last year - the team never interviewed anyone a second time and hired him as soon as the Super Bowl ended. McClain mentioned that he's been saying how great it is for the hometown guy Kubiak to come home and coach for the hometeam, so it was kind of silly for him to say that the hometown thing shouldn't factor into the Vince Young situation.
They talked a lot about the playoffs. He thinks that Carolina and Pittsburgh aren't getting enough credit and that the Seahawks haven't really beat any great teams lately. Said Shaun Alexander would play this weekend.
They took a call from a girl who said that leadership wasn't an important quality in football. Being embarassed for my own gender was definintely the highlight of the show for me.

I heard the majority of it....I believe that it was just a rehashing of most of what we say on here and what you hear every day on there. He said that Gary Kubiak has had no chance to scout Vince or Reggie and all that will take place after his season is done and he's here fulltime. Makes sense.

I forgot, in response to a caller who wanted to point out that all Longhorns haven't lived up to potential in the NFL or have "personal issues" (like getting cut for being gay - that was the caller's favorite example) - John talked a little about current Longhorns in the NFL. He spoke about Casey Hampton, Derrick Johnson, Nathan Vasher, Quentin Jammer, Ricky Williams, Leonard Davis, and Mike Williams.

Doesnt every college have their bust and big names that do well. Texas is no different, I think people start to equate colleges with certain types of players i.e. Miami has athletes, Minnesota and Iowa has O-Linemen, BC has high IQ linemen, UT has workhorse type players. I mean off the top of my head these schools come to mind and their players usually end up like this in the NFL. I guess I forgot finesse players form USC, even though they are getting more to the pure athletes also that the U was known for. I will be glad when TAMU gets back to being known for hard hitting defense guys.

Not to peeve people but I heard part yesterday afternoon and he was laughing about all of the angry e-mails he is getting calling him names for talking about VY all the time but he isn't doing it to piss people off he is just asking scouting and personnel people from other teams about him. He said he should have something in a blog today that talks about what people are telling him and how they think VY is great!He dared anyone to find one NFL personnel guy or scout who didn't think VY was awesome.

I am not against VY at all and will be perfectly happy if they pick him or Bush (I have concerns about both but the draft is always a risk) but IMO it is pretty obvious McClain is honestly reporting sifted information meant to favor VY. For example he started the little Denver doesn't use high draft picks on RB's deal. Well guess what, they haven't used a 1st rounder on a QB either in over 2 decades. Hardly a conclusive argument for Kubiak inclinations. McClain is another source for information to heap on the pile, not the insider's guide to everything out there.

fwiw, I was sitting here listening to ESPN radio - college gameday - and Kiper is on as usual. Save the Kiper comments please, we all know he's a douche bag.
Anyway, Mel says (today) that he's never seen a draft where picks 1-3 were set in January. My point is not to take Kiper at his word, but understand what people are hearing across the nation on ESPN radio. They are still saying Bush 1, Leinart 2, and Vince 3. Mel said, "not etched in stone, but definitely write it down in pen and not pencil." Again, take it fwiw, but the point is to understand what people are hearing outside the 290 corridor.
He has Brick 4 to the Jets, then Mario, then Hawk.

Until Kubiak speaks, I shall not listen. That's the only person I want to hear about who we shall take in the draft. I swear, McClain has a quota to fill with his articles. And really, there's only two people right now that he can write about. Like I said earlier, Kubiak and Kubiak alone will I listen to.

'95 - Shanahan's 1st year as Bronco head coach. Denver doesn't even have a draft choice until the 4th round. Five RBs go in the 1st round and 20 are selected by the time the Broncos take one in the 6th round. His name? Terrell Davis. Davis rushes for 1117 yards, but finishes behind Curtis Martin for the ROY.
'96 to '98 - Terrell Davis accounts for 6110 total yards ands scores 53 TDs over the next 3 seasons. Accordingly, the Broncos don't feel the need to select a RB in the 1st round. Instead, Denver drafts a LB, DL, and a WR with their 1st round picks. Oh, and Denver wins 2 Super Bowls over this time period and their record over the 3 seasons (playoffs included) is 46-10.
'99 - In the 4th game of the season, Davis suffers a catastrophic knee injury from which he never fully recovers. Rookie Olandis Gary, a 4th round pick, replaces Davis in the lineup and gains 1159 over 12 games. This would be Gary's only productive season as he struggles with injuries over the remainder of his career. In the '99 draft, Denver took MLB Al Wilson with their 1st round choice.
'00 - With both Davis & Gary knocked out with injuries, the Broncos turned to 27-year-old rookie Mike Anderson, a 6th round selection. Anderson responded with a 1487 yard, 15 TD year and reeled in the NFL's ROY award. Anderson would not have another 1000+ yard season for 5 years. Deltha O'Neal was the Broncos 1st round choice in the draft.
'01 - Denver went with the "RB by committee" approach, with neither Anderson nor a still hobbled Davis able to get it going. The Broncos finished 10th in the NFL in rushing, but were 6th in attempts. Denver finished 22nd in total offense, by far the worst in Kubiak's tenure as OC. The Broncos did not take a RB in this draft, selecting CB Willie Middlebrooks with the 24th pick.
'02 - Denver selected Clinton Portis with their 2nd round pick, and the rookie from Miami had a combined 1872 yards in total offense, with 17 TDs. The ROY award went to a Bronco RB for the 2nd time in 3 years. The Broncos rose to 5th in the league in rushing (11th in attempts) and had the NFL's #3 offense. WR Ashley Lelie was Denver's 1st round pick, and DeShaun Foster was the only RB taken between Lelie and Portis.
'03 - Despite being out for two games, Portis has another fabulous season, to the tune of 1591 yards rushing & 14 TDs. The Broncos took microback Quentin Griffin in the 4th round, but are said to have desired Domanick Davis, selected by the Texans only 7 picks earlier. Georgia RT George Foster was Denver’s 1st round pick.
'04 - The offseason saw the Broncos and Portis engage in a contract dispute, and Portis was shipped to Washington for the rights to All Pro CB Champ Bailey. Mike Anderson went down with a season ending knee injury in the preseason, so the RB competition consisted of FA vet Garrison Hearst, 2nd year RB Griffin, ’04 2nd round pick Tatum Bell, and converted FB Reuben Droughns. Droughns took over the starting spot in the season’s 5th game, and ripped off 6 100+ yard rushing performances in 7 games. Still, Bell showed enough in the season’s last month for the Broncos to trade Droughns to Cleveland for 2 defensive linemen. Droughns proved he was capable of being a lead back, by gaining 1200+ yards behind a mediocre Brown offensive line. LB D.J. Williams was the Broncos first pick, and 3 RBs (Steve Jackson, Chris Perry, and Kevin Jones) went between Williams and Bell.
’05 – Denver reverted to the "RB by committee" method, but this time with different results. Anderson & Bell gave the Broncos a NFL version of “Thunder & Lightning”, combining for 1935 yards rushing and 21 TDs. The offense was 2nd in the league in rushing attempts and rushing yards, 4th in yards per carry and total offense. The Broncos are one victory away from a trip to Super Bowl XL in Detroit. The Broncos did not have a 1st round pick, and took the enigmatic RB Maurice Clarett in the 3rd round. Clarett went busto during preseason.
So I guess McClain can look at that info and say Kubiak won’t take a RB #1. I can't look at any of the Broncos drafts since '95 and say they should have taken a RB in the 1st round. What I do see is that Kubiak values a running game as much as any coach in the NFL. He also values depth at RB. That’s why even if Bush were to be selected by the Texans, Domanick and even Morency would still be utilized in his offense. Under Kubiak, the Texans will still be a run first offense. They’ll just run much better.

LOL..she is no draftnik but my Mom, who lives in Ft. Worth, says they are talking up there like we are taking VY because Kubiak can work with him. Keep Carr a year and then trade him. I'm still the belief that the most significant reason Kubiak was target locked and chosen was McNair and Reeves (and then in the interview Kubiak) thought Carr was underdeveloped by the coaches and had much more potential than we have seen. Hope they are correct, but IMO that is where they are headed. The only fly in the ointment now is a business decision of whether VY is necessary for fan support not whether Carr is inadequate.
