John McClain eats newspaper

Yeah, I posted in his rumor thread. He made good, but I somehow have the feeling this was all about his attention seeking behavior.

Just goes to show that you can eat almost anything with syrup on it.

Wow, I never would've thought McClain would actually acknowledge being wrong about something, especially when he speaks so absolutely when it comes to predicting what the Texans are going to do.

What a buffoon he looked like choking down that paper. When he said "If I get sick and die blame it on Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien..." He looked like he was about to go into cardiac arrest.

Pointless attention whoring.

well, he always looks like he's a sneeze away from cardiac arrest :D

I don't find him annoying tho, I think he's kinda funny

This is win, win situation for McClain. If he was right about QB, I told you so. If not, eat newspaper and get exposure as NFL.com picked up so this isn't local, it is nationwide. Some people who are not used to seeing McClain would think this is a man with his words.

I was so fed up with him saying the Texans will draft a quarterback with the first overall pick for several months. Many of us wanted Jadeveon Clowney, by far the best player in the draft, and I'm just glad John McClain was wrong once again.

McClain's inside info isn't worth that crap fishwrap its printed on. He doesn't know anything until the Texans hand him the press release. If anyone look at it objectively they would see there was no way we were picking anyone but Clowney if we kept the pick.

Yep.

This is what I said on other McClain's thread.

This just tells you how much insights his got with the Texans. He also wanted to fire Rick Smith when we drafted Blue and not RB from Baylor right?(McClain himself from Baylor right?) The Texans FO clearly mention that they will go big and tough. At least he should listen to what the Texans' direction for this draft. After all, it is his job I assume. I just don't understand why he still has job at Houston Chronicle.

I still hear some people saying McCain said this and that but guys, we get more Texans' insights from outside of Houston media.

Pathetic attention whoring.

I almost feel bad for him.

McLame just got McLamerer, if that's even possible. AT least he looks like a lighter McLame than in the past. I always wanted to see what would happen if you stuck a pin in his chin. Is that where shrunken heads come from?

It's call critic not an attack I think. He is a sports writer not an ordinarily fan. He works in media field and what he says or writes can effect many people right or wrong. It's not 1 on 1 and it is more like 1 on 1mil and this is why sometimes they get sue for a huge amount of money by telling wrong things. It's call responsibility which comes with journalism. You get pay well but you pay direly when you do or say something wrong usually.

He came out to a Blue Crew tailgate several years ago. Seemed like a nice guy.

I've had a few email exchanges with him over the years and yes, he is no doubt a nice guy. I don't have any problem at all with him as a person or personally. I don't care for his "persona" which I think he spends too much time trying to cultivate. He was at one time a pretty good sports writer. His stuff contributed to what you knew about the team and the game. I really just don't think he made the transition to the internet age very well and it's as simple as that.

Dinosaur.

I've heard him say on the radio plenty of times "What do I know?" when his opinion's been wrong. Maybe it's wrong more than right, but I have to give him credit for admitting he's wrong which many people can't do.

If he didn't film this then his critics would say he never did it, if he films it then it is a stunt. A fair criticism is that he should have never made the promise to eat his words in the first place as it cheapens journalism.

It's hard for me to fault a man who's paid to give his opinion, and once given owning up to it when it's wrong, even if he does it imperfectly.

I think he's definitely lost weight. I remember seeing him having to sit down during training camp. Dude drug a chair darn near everywhere.

Someone posted a link a few weeks ago that john said some things just to get clicks.

I am really hating this age of "information" seems the writers throw junk out and the readers have to do the homework and fact check nowadays.

I have no doubt that John the man is a nice guy.

However, John McClain the Houston football media figure is often a bit of a pompous ass. He has transformed himself from a simple beat writer to a media personality. And with that transformation comes silly stunts...like eating a freakin' newspaper.

And there's the rub: is he an entertainer or a football expert/insider?

He is the "go to" guy on NFL Network for all things Houston Texans. And when he goes on national tv and emphatically states that the Texans front office are fools if they don't draft Johnny Manziel (because of the marketing opportunities, iirc), then I think McClain has basically sent an open invitation for criticism when he gets it so wrong.

Curious: why is he called "The General"? :um:

I can't help but love the guy. But I don't read him anymore or keep up with his tweets. I just listen to him on the radio and love his homespun story telling. When I met him in the stadium parking lot while tailgating nearly twelve years ago he couldn't have been more accessible or amiable. So I don't get all the McClain hate, but I suppose I can see how the tweets and the articles could irritate someone.
