Joe Paterno/Penn State

Penn State to 'commemorate' 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno's first game
Penn State plans to “commemorate” the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno’s first game as Nittany Lions head coach.

The news was revealed Thursday in a press release detailing the school’s “themed game days and promotions” for the upcoming season. The recognition for Paterno will take place on Sept. 17 when PSU hosts Temple. The game has also been dubbed “THON and Community Heroes Day” and “Faculty & Staff Day.” No other details were immediately available.

Other than brief glimpses of Paterno in various in-stadium hype videos, this will be the first acknowledgement of the coach by the program in Beaver Stadium since his last game as head coach on Oct. 29, 2011. Paterno, who joined the Penn State staff as an assistant in 1950 and became head coach in 1966, was fired by the university’s board of trustees on Nov. 9, 2011 — just days after the arrest of longtime PSU defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for child sexual abuse.

This place is just bizzaro town. 'Community Heroes Day', ffs.

"Wow, Baylor is trying to give us a run for our money as the most awful university in the US. Better up the ante."

This is another media sensation where, of course, I am aware of the broad story but not all the details. To me it's just another example of the society we have created. We have multiple cases, over a span of years, of young adults being sexually abused/exploited and not one went to the police to file charges? In my mind, this is an indictment against society. It's also an indictment against the "victims" for not taking responsibility for their lives and filing charges.

As I said, I don't know the details of the individual cases, so I can't get too worked up over media sensationism and liberally defined social "crime". I don't get it - if crimes were committed, why weren't crimes reported by the victims.

This is incredibly stupid victim blaming and you should stop.

No. Penn State was awful long before Joe Pa left. His players could rape, beat, and kill at will when he was coach.

DeAndre Levy proud he broke “dirtbag” Joe Paterno’s leg

He was most famous for a 2006 play against Penn State, a sideline tackle that accidentally drove him into coach Joe Paterno, breaking JoePa's left leg. Ten years later, Levy now calls that incident "my proudest moment in college," as history has since revealed Happy Valley's sad secrets. "That dirtbag, man," says Levy of Paterno, who was recently implicated as being aware of child sexual abuse committed by his assistant Jerry Sandusky as early as 1976. "We've gotta stop prioritizing sports over humanity," says Levy. "Just because somebody can throw a football or coach football, they're excluded from their wicked acts."

You deny the evidence of his knowledge of the incidents?

Knowledge? Yes, Did nothing about it? NO I believe he did what was asked of him
by his superiors. That matters be brought to their attention, Before anything is
done legally. After all! In the eyes of the school this could have been a crack pot
making wild allegations against one of their coaches. Who at the time had very
good/reputable name

where Penn State dropped the ball? Is Penn State didn't work in
conjunction with law enforcement. I am not talking about the rent
a cop's they hire to patrol the campus 24/7

I am talking about actual law enforcement who needed to be
notified immediately especially in a case where? More than 1
eye witness seen him sodomizing his victims in the showers
where he knew non personal weren't allowed to be at any time
