Joe Mixon: “Nick Caserio is currently working on something BIG!”

Texans are strapped for cash under the cap, mostly thanks to the o-line. Howard 26 mil, Tunsil 28 mil, I forget Mason’s but it’s a lot. And if these guys are cut, the charge on the cap is almost as much as the salary.

Guys, they are stuck. They don’t have the $$$ to go after bigname FA’s. Higgins ain’t happening.

I don’t see big changes to the line either. Maybe a middling interior guy in FA that might start, and another middle of the draft to develop.

The improvement is going to have to come from better coaching, better play design, and calling plays that get the ball out of CJ’s hands faster more often.
You have to look at how the money is disbursed, how much guaranteed money remains, the remaining signing bonus, the type of termination designation AND the replacement plan to understand if it's worth cutting a player. I'm not saying it should or shouldn't be done but look at what you can do from a financial perspective with Howard as a post June 1st cut. https://overthecap.com/player/tytus-howard/7814

I don’t mean to be rude but you are incorrect about our salary cap and seem to ignore my other posts. Setting asideTunsil for now, we can remove Titus Howard plus Shaq Mason and Dalton Schultz adding ~$33 Million. We currently have $10.7 roster cap for 2025. Total ~$43.7 million. Cutting Denico Autry adds another $9 million.
Salary cap is not an issue. Finding the correct players to spend it on and pulling the trigger is. I do not anticipate anything in this regard until Nick has Demeco's people in place.

It could be a very exciting and fruitful offseason.

I don't see this at all

They could draft Donovan Jackson in the 1st and sign a guy like Feliciano in FA and draft Dylan Fairchild in the 3rd and have depth across the OL. Draft Tez Johnson in the 2nd and all of a sudden the offense doesn't look so bad.

Spend some of the money BB was talking about in FA on the defense and let's roll

Cut Howard & Mason this year, draft an LG/C early and roll with Tunsil/Rookie/Patterson/Scruggs/Fisher next season.

Also draft a developmental OT. Hope that Fisher shows enough to kick across to LT for 2026 season, hope the draft pick works out.

Cut Tunsil and be prepared to come back to the well to draft OL early again next season.

This is the only way I can see them keeping CJ, Stingley, WAJ over the next few years. Maybe the likes of Hunter & Mixon will need to be allowed to leave via FA too when it comes down to it. But we’ll have to keep hold of our young core of franchise players first and foremost and develop a new OL from within.

This staff they are hiring for the O is so important to the success of DeMeco/Stroud/Caserio it can’t be understated.

Not getting into anything personal about those OL vets, it’s purely how the hell do you make the cap work with these young guns?

Good post Dreamer and you're not the only one! I too have a dream...

I enjoyed your post. I am thinking that we may have difficulty bringing in offensive guard free agents without getting outbid. I am very hopeful that we will have an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from OSU soon. I think this will give us a complete change in the offensive scheme going from zbs to a power Gap. I can see the new Texans coaches keeping Tunsil to see if he can adapt. I think he can but not sure he will want to or put effort into it.

IF the system is GAP, I would look favorably on Josh Simmons left tackle from OSU who is familiar with the scheme and the coaches. I think he could start at left tackle this season but would start him at left guard. Some have him already higher than our pick but I think he will be there at 25. I would also bring in a developmental tackle like Charles Grant or Grey Zabel of North Dakota State who was used at the recent Bowl practices at both guards and Center and I understand is getting rave reviews at all three positions.

Seth McClauthen OSU starting center will probably drop due to a knee injury but I would love to have him in round 4.

To address some of your points, neither Howard or Mason are free agents this year or 2026 and we receive huge cap benefits if they are released this offseason.

Also, we are in very good salary cap presently due to Nick's oversight and we should remain that way as we go forward.

I have attained new (to me) information on salary cap in regards to void years. This will be huge IMO if Nick wants to retain Stephon Diggs. As this does not impact Joe Mixon, I will be posting the info today in the Texans Random Thought thread which will allow me to find it more easily for reference.

Look at the way the Eagles operate their cap if you want to see how a contender does things.
